161 | sharing our faith to unbelievers so hard | 1 Cor 1:18 | hopalong | 199596
Dear Gunnie, You said... "Since I first heard of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit I read the bible to see the truth. Alas I found nothing in 27 years of reading the bible again and again that persuaded me to believe. True christians say you must have faith and here is where I agree with Jesusman. Faith is a Christian concept that lay people cannot understand, It is 'Churchese' as discussed in Jesusmans posts and to describe faith to someone without it, verges on the supernatural." Simply reading the Bible does not neccessarily result in regeneration! Regeneration is the work of God the Holy Spirit.(see john 3). As a "natural man", I also delved into the Bible, however all I found was condemnation. 1 Cor 2:14 But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. Brother Bowler, Thanks for your Q. As I get closer to old age (I'm 62) I find myself reflecting on my life. One of my regrets is that I used contraceptives, which seemed sensible at the time...but now breaks my heart. Ps 127:3 Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. IN RETOSPECT I was a fool! I traded the Gifts of God for material security. If you are planning your family, please do not spurn any of His gifts or rewards. Hopalong |

165 | Why are some gifts of God not wanted? | 1 Cor 12:4 | hopalong | 208080
Dear Bowler, thank you brother for sharing your heart with me. I pray that your child will bring fort a multitude of grand kids for the glory of God. Even though I'm a refomed Presbyterian and I strongly disagree with Catholic Church on many of their doctrines, I do commend them for standing firm against abortion and contraceptives. God Almigty has proclaimed, and in no uncertain terms ,that children are HIS gift His Reward to His beloved children. How then, can those who call themselves by His name, seek to prevent HIS precious gift from arriving? Or even being sent in the first place. I pray that our younger brethern will heed The WORD OF GOD! Ps 127:3 Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. We are faithless when we fear that children may be a hindrance and a burden that may have an adverse impact on our "lifestyle". Have we been saved merely to indulge ourselves on all the world offers? God Forbid it! No, we have been saved so that we may be wedded to our glorious and magnificent bridegroom, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am writing to my younger friends, from a heart filled with love you. I am envisioning you 40 years from now.God willing, I see you surrounded by a large family sons and daughters, a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren! In that day you will rejoice with great rejoicing and Praise God for rewarding you with a strong and beautiful children. From the bottom of my heart, Hoppy |

166 | gifts of Healing and Miracles for today. | 1 Cor 12:9 | hopalong | 187184
Dear Roy, I understand and I appreciate your staunch defense of Pentacostal doctrine. For over a decade I held to the same teaching that you are espousing. It takes a great deal of faith to see many of the same people respond to the call to come forward for healing...to see them limping down the aisle, time and time again, and to watch them limp back to their seats. One young lady (whom I will never forget) had a severe problem with her legs, nevertheless, despite her faith, and the faith of those who prayed and laid hands on her, her healing never happened, in that she struggled back to her seat with no visable improvement. The last time I saw her, she was limping back from the altar when she fell and struck her head on the rail of a wooden pew. It broke my heart. Dear friend, tell me...how often have you witnessed healing services where all who went forward were miraculously healed? 2 Cor 12:8 Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. 2 Cor 12:9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 2 Cor 12:10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Thanks BradK, My point is that that the NT miracles were meant to authenticate the fact that the apostles and evangelsts were men sent by God. The Gospel had not been yet completed at that time. Signs, miracles and wonders were (primaily) given to show the people that Jesus was not simply another false messiah. Hopalong |

While miraculous healing is a wonderful thing, it is not the main thing. The main thing is that thru the healings and wonders, the people witnessed the power of God working thru the apostles and evangelists! These signs testified to their claim that they were sent by and empowered by God to proclaim the Good News that salvation comes thru faith in Jesus. Hopalong |

173 | Why Jesus die And Us asleep | 2 Cor 5:21 | hopalong | 200046
DeardrewBoy, Good question! Jesus died so that we would not have to die.Death is the penalty for sin. 2 Cor 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Jesus suffered death so that we would not have to suffer it ourselves. Hopalong |

175 | Are Jewish people assured salvation? | Gal 3:16 | hopalong | 217104
Rom 9:1 I am telling the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience testifies with me in the Holy Spirit, Rom 9:2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing grief in my heart. Rom 9:3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, Rom 9:4 who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service and the promises, Rom 9:5 whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen. Rom 9:6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; Rom 9:7 nor are they all children because they are Abraham's descendants, but: "THROUGH ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS WILL BE NAMED." Rom 9:8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants. Rom 9:9 For this is the word of promise: "AT THIS TIME I WILL COME, AND SARAH SHALL HAVE A SON." Rom 9:10 And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; Rom 9:11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 3 Matt 1:21 "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." 1 Matt 24:31 "And He will send forth His angels with A GREAT TRUMPET and THEY WILL GATHER TOGETHER His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other ... those whom God has chosen (jew and gentile alike) are those who will be granted the gift of salvation. 176 | Are Jewish people assured salvation? | Gal 3:16 | hopalong | 217138
Hi Edd, thanks for your Q.Heb 10:1 For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near. Heb 10:2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had consciousness of sins? Heb 10:3 But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. Heb 10:4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. |

177 | What was the purpose of the law? | Gal 3:23 | hopalong | 187304
The pupose of the law was to deprive mankind of the possablity of becoming righteous thru works. 1 Cor 15:56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; Before Paul came head to head with the commandment not to covet, he had believed that he was righteous. But the commandment knocked him off his high hoss and left him dead and lying in the dust. Rom 7:9 I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; Hopalong |

Lookin, Thanks for your input! But surely, you do'nt belive that Paul was unrepentant do you? When Paul left Jerusalem he was breathing curses and bent on rubbing out the Christians in Damascus. After his encounter with our Lord Jesus, we see a transformed man. A man who gives every appearance of having recieved the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Based upon what the Bible teaches in relation to repentance and salvation, I feel I am on solid ground when I say that Paul had been granted the gift of repentance. Forgive me if I have misunderstood your point. Hoppy |

180 | God grant repentance? | Gal 3:23 | hopalong | 187395
"Question (full): Regarding 2 Tim 2:25, what do you mean when you say, "Apart from God's "granting" no one has any desire to repent." Three observations: 1. To, as you seem to suggest, grant one the "desire" to repent does not necessarily follow that he/she will repent. 2. It doesn't say God grants them the "desire" to repent but that "God may grant them repentance". 3. TEV translates it: "God may give them the opportunity to repent". This is my understanding of the verse." ---------------------------------------------- Point 1.How can it be that one be granted a change in their nature, but exhibit no sign that their nature has been changed? Unrepentance is not a habit or an attitude. It is one of the hallmarks of the natural man. The natural man does not recive the things of God. Therefore, God must change that nature to one that will accept the things neccesary for eternal life. Point 2.Indeed, God does not grant all men this gift. It is God who has chosen us.1 Cor 1:27,28 Point 3.I prefer the NASB and ESV who stay as close to the original language as possible. This reduces the chance of the translator's pre-suppossitions leading away from what was originaly meant. Hoppy |
