161 | no red letters in Revelation, why? | Rev 1:8 | stjohn | 215464
Hi tex, As you can see in the verse above, it does show Jesus' words in red. Perhaps the addition you are using doesn't? I would suppose it's up to the publisher which additions do and which don't. John |

162 | Luke 10:1 | Luke 9:53 | stjohn | 215451
Hi Mike, If we look at the verse above in ch9 v 53 we can see that He was on His way to Jerusalem at that point, and though perhaps on a meandering path it does still look that way. Also, Scripture doesn't say how many city's or places He sent them to; just that He sent then to every one that He was going to visit. So, we cannot determine how many that was. We can also take a fairly well educated guess that this was at or near the end of His ministry, because He had been telling the twelve that He was going to be killed. Though we see as we read along in the next chapter He continues to teach and preach along the way, and since we know He crucifixion took place in Jerusalem, we can pretty safely assume this is on the way to Jerusalem, and was at or near the end of His ministry. Other's may be along to add more detail but that's my two cent's worth. I hope it helps. John |

163 | should you keepa clean house | Prov 15:19 | stjohn | 215441
Hi sista Donna, Searcher has given a good answer. If I may add, some scriptures that show how God likes things done in an orderly manner. Ex 27:21, Lev 24:4, Judg 6:26, 2 Kin 20:1, 1 Cor 14:40, James 3:16: (we all know being overweight is not good for us) So, also, If I may add that, He certainly cares very deeply about our health, for not even a sparrow can fall to the ground without His noticing it; "Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows." Luke 12:7: And that we should do all things carefully and diligently, work, and even play, alike, in prayer and meditation, and with thanksgiving, all things, as unto the Lord. We are His possession, bought with a very dear price on the cross. John |

164 | Hebrews 2:3-4 | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 215415
Dear humility, I would encourage that person to read his or her Bible. And remind them that all but less then can be counted on your fingers, died in the wilderness because; although God had shown them not only the parting of the Red Sea, but many, many signs and wonders! God was with them on a daily bases, and by the pillar of fire that lighted their way by night, and the pillar of cloud that was with them and led them every day. Not to mention the Manna for their food and the Rock that miraculously poured forth water! And those are just a few, there were also the plagues He put on Egypt and more. Tell them to read the book of Exodus and then they will know these things. And encourage them to stop watching heretic telivangelists. But they perished in the desert because of their unbelief. Tell your friend that is not what the Bible says, tell them the Bible says that: It is by the Word of Truth that men are saved, not by signs and wonders. And tell them: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." Rom 1:16. "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise," Eph 1:13 It is not by signs and wonders, but by the power of the Holy Spirit working through the Word of Truth, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, that mens souls are saved! 165 | Reformers Say God's Mot. Of Salvatation? | John 3:16 | stjohn | 215400
Hi brothersmith, Welcome to the forum! If you would like to learn about reformed theology visit this cite ( http://www.monergism.com/ ) and click on "Reformed Theology" at the top left of the home page. God has only ever had one motivation to save sinners; And that is LOVE-!! "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." John 3:16 Reformed Theology teaches nothing different then that about God's motivation for saving sinners. John |

166 | how can Barnabas sell or possess land | Acts 4:36 | stjohn | 215356
Hi jbjona, Having no 'inheritance' does not necessarily mean they cannot own land. Here's some more info that may help explain how a Levite can own add sell land, especially in this 'new covenant' historical context. I hope this helps. John "Ver. 37. Having land, sold it,.... Whether this was in Cyprus, or in Judea, is not certain; nor how he came by it, whether he had bought it, as the priests and Levites might, and as Jeremiah, who was of the priests, bought a field at Anathoth, Jer 32:9 or, whether it was his wife's dowry; for the Levites had nothing by inheritance: they had forty two cities, and the six cities of refuge to dwell in, and the field of the suburbs of these cities; which field or land was never to be sold, but to be a perpetual possession, Le 25:34 but now the ceremonial law was abolished, and this precept was not attended to, if the land was of this sort." 167 | Soldier fighting enemy? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 215326
Hi Rajeeb, King David was a mighty warrior and, he was called a man after God's own heart. Gideon was hiding in a winepress from the Midianites when the Lord appeared to him and said, perhaps facetiously: "The LORD is with you, O valiant warrior." Judges 6:12b, And then He (the Lord) compelled him in v14 to go and fight the Midianites. Jesus also said: "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13 The Bible, and more specifically our Lord, does say to love your neighbor, but the Bible does not say to give up your arms in order to do that. Jesus also told His disciples to buy swards, (Luke 22-36) though he didn't specifically say to use them. But He also did not ask the centurion to put down his sward before he would heal his servant. (Matt 8:5-13) Loving your neighbor, can sometimes mean, standing up and fighting for him if he is to weak to fight in order to protect himself from evil men. John |

Hi Mike, I don't know of any online historical study material, but if I may I'll offer you from my own experience that is takes years of diligent study before it all starts to come together. After thousands of hours of study, and hundreds of hours of listening to tapes cd's and online lectures and sermons, it gradually starts to all make sense. In short, there is no EASY way. Put your nose to the grindstone, study hard, and you will be rewarded for your hard work. First and foremost though, pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to gain knowledge of the things of God. Finally- "And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him." Heb 11:6 Proverbs 12:24 1 Thessalonians 5:11-12 John |

170 | Rev 3:15-16 | Revelation | stjohn | 215184
Hi Mike, I think I'd go with conventional wisdom on that one, though I don't really know the full extent of this teaching that was given to you. Perhaps it could be used to apply to that situation, of that I'm not so sure, but, notwithstanding, I think it would be a stretch to say the least. There was a Church in that city, at that time, that was perhaps in that spiritual condition. And though it is not known for sure, it does look that way from what is know about it. Here are some thoughts from John Gill that may shed some more light on these verses. Gill does talk about the actual city in his commentary, but here he is speaking of it as it represents the Church in general, it's faltering spirituality, and lackluster love for God and His Church. John --"This church represents the state of the church, from the end of the spiritual reign of Christ, till the time of his personal appearing and kingdom, to judge the quick and dead; for after the spiritual reign is over, professors of religion will sink into a formality, and into a lukewarm frame of spirit, and into great spiritual sloth and security, Re 3:15, which will make those times like the times of Noah and of Lot; and such will be the days of the coming of the son of man to judge the world. Its name signifies either "the righteousness of the people"; and so may point at that popular and external righteousness, which the majority of the professors of religion in this period of time will be boasting of, and trusting in; being self-sufficient, and self-dependent, when at the same time they will be naked, as well as poor and blind, Re 3:17; or it signifies "the judging of the people"; for this church state, at the end of it, will bring on the general judgment; the Judge will now be at the door indeed, standing and knocking; and they that are ready to meet the bridegroom, when he comes, will be admitted into the nuptial chamber, and sit down with him in his throne, in the thousand years' kingdom, at the close of which will be the second resurrection, when all the people, small and great, shall be judged, Re 3:19." 172 | promotional products to customers-Bribe? | Bible general Archive 4 | stjohn | 215055
Hi Rajeeb, Thats not really a Bible question; but it does involve moral ethics, which is of great concern, especially to a Christian who wishes to please his Lord. I don't really know the nature of your business or what you may be involved in, so it is surly something for which you should pray and ask guidance. Here is the definition of a bribe. I hope this helps you. John Bribe –noun 1. money or any other valuable consideration given or promised with a view to corrupting the behavior of a person, esp. in that person's performance as an athlete, public official, etc.: The motorist offered the arresting officer a bribe to let him go. 2. anything given or serving to persuade or induce: The children were given candy as a bribe to be good. Bribe –verb (used with object) 3. to give or promise a bribe to: They bribed the reporter to forget about what he had seen. 4. to influence or corrupt by a bribe: The judge was too honest to be bribed. dictionary.reference.com |

173 | Why did God tell Abraham to kill his son | Gen 22:2 | stjohn | 214928
Hi bibleman, First of all, we must see that God cannot sin. Sin, all sin, is ultimately transgression against God, so God cannot sin against Himself. God is the creator of life and thus all life belongs to God, therefore, He can do as He wills to do, and whatever pleases Him to do with what belongs to Him. All God does, everything He does, is to bring glory to Himself, if He choses to kill (and He does) it is a righteous act. All who are alive today and all who have ever lived are sinners and the wages of sin is death. So it is purely by God's grace and mercy that we are or anyone who has ever lived is/was allowed to be alive at all. So even if God had allowed Abraham to kill his son, (and that is just speculation) it would have been a righteous act, and not a sin. God 's judgment is always right and just, and if He choses to kill, it is not in an iniquitous or unjust way. God does not commit murder, nor in any way, can God sin. I hope this helps John |

Dear unicorn, This question has been asked about four times recently. When we see this kind a activity around a subject, it looks like a clear indication the it is a homework question. You probably already know what book and chapter to find the answer in the reading assignment you have been given. This also raises the question of whether you are old enough to be registered to this forum. Do you mind my asking you how old you are? |

175 | what is the river of water in Ezekiel 47 | Matt 4:19 | stjohn | 214747
Hi Decole, Welcome to the forum! Usually, water is a representation of the Holy Spirit, but in this case though it looks like it still represents the Spirit, looking in the previous verse 9 "It will come about that every living creature which swarms in every place where the river goes, will live." we see life for all the creatures, this would seem to represent life in Christ, and here the river of water may also represent the world. The spreading of the nets looks like it's a prophecy of the Apostles becoming fishers of men. Thats one deep river! :-) John |

177 | explain mathew 6:23 | Matt 6:19 | stjohn | 214707
Hi prashant, If we begin reading in verse 19 we can see Jesus is speaking of worldly treasures, and the desires of the heart; not to store these things up for ourselves, and this speaks also of not looking upon them covetously. Still on this theme, Jesus goes on to say in verse 23 "If the eye is bad" meaning: if the eye looks upon worldly treasures covetously, then the heart is bad also. Hence, He then says: "how great is the darkness!" This is a dire warning to put aside our desires for worldly treasures. I hope this helps John |

179 | What does the Bible say about anal sex? | Gen 19:1 | stjohn | 214689
Dear humility, Read Genesis chapter's 18-19 and you can see how God deals with this kind of sin. The term, Sodomy, (a name that came from Sodom) has come to mean sexual immorality in general and in particular the type you mentioned. It is wrong, it is perhaps sexual immorality at it's lowest, it is very wrong. John |

Hi humility, I think the answer is pretty obviously no. Not everyone who is a Christian has material wealth. I fact, many are dirt poor. Just look at how many poor people in other country's are coming to Christ, and are some of the poorest people on earth. John |
