168 | What family planning method is good? | Ps 127:3 | Radioman2 | 97859
Repost of ID# 1047 by charis 'I don't think that the Bible expressly prohibits the use of contraceptives, BUT, it is the attitude of the user that is in question. If used for the purpose of 'safe sex' because you are not sure of your partner, God cannot be pleased with the attitude. This includes promiscuous sex, adultery, harlotry, homosexuality, pre-marital (trial) sex, etc. Another abuse would be selfish, such as, "kids would detract from my plans, my career, or even my ministry." The key word is 'MY.' 'If, however, you have a normal, healthy, natural Christian life, and decide that your family is complete, and that (to a certain degree, and led by the Holy Spirit) age, finances, marital unity, logic, etc. lead you to want to stop proliferation, I cannot see God saying either, "Take a chance on another child," or "Stop having sex with your mate." 'Another factor,of course,is your gender. A man seems to be able to be more legalistic about this than a woman. He doesn't have to bear the child, nor does he have (usually) as much responsibility in rearing them. The only 'pro-choice' (in this matter) that is Biblical is that a woman should have a say in how many. I belong to the former gender, but can see the latter's point of view. 'Finally the method of contraception is also important. Abortion is absolutely out! Some drugs are potentially dangerous, and operations are permanent. Great caution is necessary, as well as spiritual and medical counsel. 'As to Biblical support for my thinking, I don't think that it was an issue, as there were not many forms available. As abortion and some very dangerous concoctions were the only real options, it is no wonder that God did not speak in favor of these methods. 'I would be interested to hear, in the light of these comments, views from the 'other side.' I am sure there are some who would say the Bible forbids contraception, but I suspect that the view is a bit legalistic or assumptive. I pray that this portrays, if nothing else, a good argument based on my understanding of the intent of God toward us. 'Blessings in Jesus' name.' ____________________ Repost of ID# 1047 originally submitted by charis Reposted by Radioman2 |

171 | The rod of correction, could it also mea | Prov 20:30 | Radioman2 | 92328
Guilt is not merely a subjective feeling. It is an objective fact. Guilt is the "fact of having committed a breach of conduct especially violating law and involving a penalty." ____________________ Estella: Question: 'Could "strokes" or "stripes reach to the innermost parts or the "inward parts of the belly" refer to the "feeling" of guilt? Thus meaning that the rod of correction removes GUILT from a child?' Answer: Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your good question. My understanding of Proverbs 20:30 is that it does not refer to the "feeling" of guilt, but to the actual guilt (which is more than merely a subjective feeling), i.e., the evil itself. Note the use of the word "evil" in the following translations. AMPLIFIED Proverbs 20:30 Blows that wound cleanse away evil, and strokes [for correction] reach to the innermost parts. The Revised Standard Version Proverbs 20:30 Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts. Proverbs 20:30 Contemporary English Version (CEV) A severe beating can knock all of the evil out of you! GOD'S WORD Proverbs 20:30 Brutal beatings cleanse away wickedness. Such beatings cleanse the innermost being. Proverbs 20:30 The Message (MSG) A good thrashing purges evil; punishment goes deep within us. Grace and peace to you, Radioman2 |

172 | firstfruit vs. tithe | Is 1:13 | Radioman2 | 87893
"Firstfruits", Definition It is advisable to define a word before launching into a discussion of it. 'Firstfruits '(Heb. resit [tyivaer]; Gk. aparche [ajparchv]). The concept of firstfruits derives from God's creation work. Because God created everything that exists, all of creation belongs to him (Psalm 24:1). Consequently, that which is first and best belongs to him and is to be given to him. 'Because of God's creative power and ownership of all, the Bible instructs believers to give God the best of the animal sacrifices (see Lev. 1-5). The land is also viewed as a gift from God and the best of it, its "firstfruits, " is to be given to him—crops (Exod 23:16,19), the wheat harvest (Exod 34:22; Lev 2:14; 23:20), olive oil (Num 18:12; Deut 18:4), the finest new wine (Num 18:12; Deut 18:4), honey (2 Chron 31:5), sheep wool (Deut 18:4), and fruit (Neh 10:35). The Old Testament makes it clear that everything that God's people have is to be viewed as from God and gained through his providence (Psalm 50:10). 'Believers are the "firstfruits" of God—"a kind of firstfruits of all he created" (Jas 1:18). Spiritual "firstfruits" may be the first converts in an area (Rom 16:5). As "firstfruits" believers are a testimony to God's power in salvation. They are his first born, redeemed by Christ's blood. In their holy standing, believers are God's firstfruits—"holy to the Lord, the firstfruits of his harvest" (Jer 2:3). God's people are therefore to present themselves as holy firstfruits to God, as "living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God" (Rom 12:1). In having the "firstfruits of the Spirit, " the work of the Spirit in effecting the present redemption of their souls, believers are given the guarantee that they will have the future redemption of their bodies at the second coming of Christ (Rom 8:23). 'In 1 Corinthians 15:20, 23, Paul teaches that Christ in his bodily resurrection is the "firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep." As such, he is the guarantee that all those who belong to him will be raised from the dead at his second coming. In the natural world, the first sheaf of the crop was to be brought to God (Lev 23:10,11,17) as a guarantee that the rest of the harvest was coming. So it is in God's redemption harvest. First, Christ the "firstfruits" has triumphed in his resurrection; then, the rest of his "crop, " the redeemed, will be raised triumphantly at his second coming (1 Cor 15:23). 'In light of this, God's people, as his "firstfruits, " are to have a sanctifying effect on others (1 Cor 5:6-7), just as Abraham and the patriarchs had a sanctifying effect on disobedient Israel (Rom 11:14-16). Believers are to be true followers of the Lamb, just as the saints in the second coming, who are described as holy in life, "purchased from among men and offered as firstfruits to God and to the Lamb" (Rev 14:4). 173 | Was time turned back 40 minutes? | Is 38:8 | Radioman2 | 90479
Time Ran Backwards for Hezekiah 'Time stopped for Joshua, and it ran backwards for Hezekiah (2 Kings 20:9-11). 'God used this event as a special sign to show Hezekiah that he would regain his health. The sun's shadow moved backwards by ten steps, probably five to six hours on the sundial. That is, the sun appeared to move eastward instead of westward. The conclusion is again the same, that such a miracle is beyond scientific explanation. 'God may have temporarily reversed the earth's rotation, including all its inhabitants, or the miracle in Hezekiah's day could have been local instead of worldwide. The latter view is supported by 2 Chronicles 32:31, which describes envoys who traveled to the land where the miracle occurred. 'Joshua and Hezekiah both made lofty requests of the Lord, that the very heavens might be altered. And God answered their prayers. The sun, moon, and stars obey the Creator who placed them in the sky by the power of his word.' ____________________ http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/edn-c016.html Home Page: www.christiananswers.net |

174 | Did God create evil? | Is 45:7 | Radioman2 | 88707
If God is sovereign, does that make Him responsible for evil? "No. Scripture says that when God finished His creation, He saw everything and declared it "very good" (Genesis 1:31). Many Scriptures affirm that God is not the author of evil: "God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone" (James 1:13). "God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). "God is not the author of confusion" (1 Corinthians 14:33)--and if that is true, He cannot in any way be the author of evil. "Occasionally someone will quote Isaiah 45:7 (KJV) and claim it proves God made evil as a part of His creation: "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things" (emphasis added). "But the New American Standard Bible gives the sense of Isaiah 45:6-7 more clearly: "There is no one besides Me. I am the Lord, and there is no other, the One forming light and creating darkness, causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the Lord who does all these." In other words, God devises calamity as a judgment for the wicked. But in no sense is He the author of evil. "Evil originates not from God but from the fallen creature. I agree with John Calvin, who wrote, "'. . . the Lord had declared that "everything that he had made . . . was exceedingly good" [Gen. 1:31]. Whence, then comes this wickedness to man, that he should fall away from his God? Lest we should think it comes from creation, God had put His stamp of approval on what had come forth from himself. By his own evil intention, then, man corrupted the pure nature he had received from the Lord; and by his fall drew all his posterity with him into destruction. Accordingly, we should contemplate the evident cause of condemnation in the corrupt nature of humanity--which is closer to us--rather than seek a hidden and utterly incomprehensible cause in God's predestination. [Institutes, 3:23:8]' "It is helpful, I think, to understand that sin is not itself a thing created. Sin is neither substance, being, spirit, nor matter. So it is technically not proper to think of sin as something that was created. Sin is simply a want of moral perfection in a fallen creature. Fallen creatures themselves bear full responsibility for their sin. And all evil in the universe emanates from the sins of fallen creatures. "For example, Romans 5:12 says that death entered the world because of sin. Death, pain, disease, stress, exhaustion, calamity, and all the bad things that happen came as a result of the entrance of sin into the universe (see Genesis 3:14-24). All those evil effects of sin continue to work in the world and will be with us as long as sin is. "First Corinthians 10:13 promises us that God will not permit a greater trial than we can bear. And James 1:13 tells us that God will not tempt us with evil. "God is certainly sovereign over evil. There's a sense in which it is proper even to say that evil is part of His eternal decree. He planned for it. It did not take Him by surprise. It is not an interruption of His eternal plan. He declared the end from the beginning, and He is still working all things for His good pleasure (Isaiah 46:9-10). "But God's role with regard to evil is never as its author. He simply permits evil agents to work, then overrules evil for His own wise and holy ends. Ultimately He is able to make all things--including all the fruits of all the evil of all time--work together for a greater good (Romans 8:28)" (www.gty.org). ____________________ For further study: Jay Adams, The Grand Demonstration (Santa Barbara CA: Eastgate,1991). 21 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "Away with your burnt offerings and sacrifices! Eat them yourselves! 22 When I led your ancestors out of Egypt, it was not burnt offerings and sacrifices I wanted from them. 23 This is what I told them: 'Obey me, and I will be your God, and you will be my people. Only do as I say, and all will be well!' 24 "But my people would not listen to me. They kept on doing whatever they wanted, following the stubborn desires of their evil hearts. They went backward instead of forward. 25 From the day your ancestors left Egypt until now, I have continued to send my prophets--day in and day out. 26 But my people have not listened to me or even tried to hear. They have been stubborn and sinful--even worse than their ancestors." Jeremiah 7:21-26 :: New Living Translation (NLT) |
