1581 | Who wrote the book of Matthew? | Matt 9:9 | BradK | 85630
Candy, Matthew is the author! For additional introduction, JFB writes: "The author of this Gospel was a publican or tax gatherer, residing at Capernaum, on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. As to his identity with the “Levi” of the second and third Gospels, and other particulars, see on Mt 9:9. Hardly anything is known of his apostolic labors. That, after preaching to his countrymen in Palestine, he went to the East, is the general testimony of antiquity; but the precise scene or scenes of his ministry cannot be determined. That he died a natural death may be concluded from the belief of the best-informed of the Fathers—that of the apostles only three, James the Greater, Peter, and Paul, suffered martyrdom. That the first Gospel was written by this apostle is the testimony of all antiquity. 1583 | What is liberation theology? | Eph 4:14 | BradK | 84679
Dear torch81, As I understand Liberation Theology, it has it's roots in Communist-influenced social change. To understand it better, let's define what I see as the root terminology. First off is liberalism, which can in Christianity can be defined as "the movement away from traditional orthodoxy often in an attempt to harmonize biblical teachings with science, humanism, or other secular fields. The result is often a denial of essential biblical doctrines such as the Trinity, the deity of Christ, His virgin birth, His resurrection, and salvation by grace."[CARM.org] Ron Rhoads in his article titled "Christian Revolution in Latin America:The Changing Face of Liberation Theology" defines it thus: Strictly speaking, liberation theology should be understood as a family of theologies - including the Latin American, Black, and feminist varieties. All three respond to some form of oppression: Latin American liberation theologians say their poverty-stricken people have been oppressed and exploited by rich, capitalist nations. Black liberation theologians argue that their people have suffered oppression at the hands of racist whites. Feminist liberation theologians lay heavy emphasis upon the status and liberation of women in a male-dominated society." For further insights, I would refer you to his article in the Christian Research Journal, Winter 1991, page 8. It is also available online. Speaking The Truth in Love, Bradk |

1584 | Does Satan dwell within us? | 1 Cor 2:1 | BradK | 83411
Dear AMartins, First off I would refer you to 1 Cor 2:12: "12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God," Further, Romans 8 says: "However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him." I truly do not see that satan can dwell within a believer from a Biblical perspective! If we understand 1 John 4:1-4, particularly vs 4,"greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world." Believers are warned to "resist the devil" in James 4:7, and in Eph. 4:26-27 to "not give the devil an opportunity." So there is a sense that we are to be on guard. Scripture also admonishes us that,"so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes." Paul was certainly aware that "as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ." How are we to be on guard against this: I think 2 Cor.10:5 precedes his concern and answers this. Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

1585 | What was James then referring to? | Rom 4:1 | BradK | 83044
Dear exogrn, To further help you, I might suggest reading and studying Paul and then James in their entirety if you haven't done so already. Then, you might want to consult a good Commentary, such as Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown (JFB) as a start. Then, depending on your level of interest or how deep you want to go, you might try www.bible.org/docs/jam. They some excellent, well-grounded and in-depth studies on James. I hope this helps. 1586 | Help!! Works or Grace? | Rom 4:1 | BradK | 83026
Dear exogrm, The"seeming" contradiction between James and Paul has been noted for centuries. Mine is not the definitive answer, but should provide some assistance:-) In brief, Paul is expounding doctrine for the church when he writes in Romans 4:1-8: "What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered,“Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.” James, as I understand him is not teaching doctrine, but rather expounding about the practical side of our "faith". In other words, though we are justified by faith, our faith should produce good works (Eph.2:10). If our faith doesn't show forth works, what value is it? As scripture cannot contradict itself, we must attempt to reconcile the difficult passages with the clearly understood. We must also differentiate between what is doctrinal (teaching) and what is practical. Speaking The truth In Love, BradK |

1587 | Where's the sin Christ bore on the cross | Col 2:13 | BradK | 82794
leaningchildofgod, I think the clearest verses that answers your question is Colossians 2:13-14: "When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross." tjkathiresan, "But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’“You may say in your heart, ‘How will we know the word which the Lord has not spoken?’“When a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him." 1589 | UNDISPUTED LETTERS OF PAUL | 1 Cor 7:25 | BradK | 82032
Greetings KDAVIS847, Paul does not speak to nor refer to the "virgin-birth" in his writings. You may be referring to 1 Cor. 7:25- "Now concerning virgins I have no command of the Lord, but I give an opinion as one who by the mercy of the Lord is trustworthy." As to "traditions", I would hold to the Virgin Birth as an established Biblical fact and essential doctrine! It is prophesied of in Isaiah 7:14 and fulfilled in Matt. 1:19-25. 1590 | Ex divorced me and I want to remarry | 1 Cor 7:1 | BradK | 81941
Dear Troy, It's going to be difficult to keep a private question private on a public Forum:-) My only reference for you assuming you've already read it is 1 Corinthians 7. I'll offer you my advice based upon my understanding of scripture and 16 years of marriage. My friend, you are under grace, and I do not believe divorce or re-marriage is the "unpardonable sin". From experience, many in Christendom seem to hold to a legalistic standard when it comes to this issue- one that I do not believe Paul is making. God knows your heart, and you are ultimately only accountable to Him! Seek the advice and counsel of other believers as Proverbs 19:20 says. Speaking The Truth In Love, Bradk |

1591 | Message for this Age | Rom 3:4 | BradK | 81796
tjkatherisan, "it is through revelation only we can come to know about God and his Words." Yes, and this revelation is the revealed Word of God contained in the book called the Bible! "God only choose one people for a message.example seven church ages having seven messengers. To each messenger God gives one message." I'm curious, can you provide a Biblical basis or support for this statement? What of Hebrews 1:1-2? As I understand it, Martin Luther claimed no special revelation knowledge from God. Rather, he understood and expounded on truths already contained in scripture. My friend, I for one take a very high view of scripture and am not at all enamored with those who "claim" special knowledge or Extra-biblical revelation. Christ is Risen, BradK |

1592 | Message for this Age | Rom 3:4 | BradK | 81794
Greetings tjkatherisan, As the Bible does not specifically define 'revelation knowledge" cf. Eph. 1:17, what is your definition and scriptural support? Also, you say, "try to understand the message of the hour". Pray tell, what exactly is this message of the hour? Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

1593 | was there a nation of Adam an nation Eve | Gen 2:1 | BradK | 81698
Dear ydeedah, There is no mention in Scripture of anything having to do with "a nation" of Adam or Eve. There are references to "a land of Havilah" (vs 11), "land of Cush" (vs 13), and "Assyria" (vs 14). If you haven't, you may want to read through Genesis 2 and 3 where we have the Edenic Covenant (2:15-17) and then the Adamic covenant (3:14-21). Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

1594 | Where is the Fall of Satan recorded ? | Ezek 28:1 | BradK | 79630
Hi dalida, In answer to your question, the Fall of Satan is recorded in Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14. Specifically you might want to read Ezek 28:11-19 that deals with "King of Tyre" who is described in language that is more fitting Satan's fall than that of a human king. Ezekiel 28:2 distinguishes Satan from a human ruler of Tyre, and in 28:12 is called a "king". Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

1595 | Does following cost? | Luke 14:33 | BradK | 79608
Dear imuvhim, Certainly grace guides our conduct along with some common sense. Look at 2 Cor.9:6-7 that deals with principles in giving. Note that God loves a cheerful giver, not one giving out of compulsion. I might ask, does your pastor own a car or home? Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

1596 | What is the gender of angles? | Mark 16:5 | BradK | 78274
Dear 147rock, Angels seem to always have appeared as youthful or mature men (Mark 16:5), but never as old men, maybe because they neither age nor die (Luke 20:36). A common portrayal of angels is that they are winged creatures and most times as female (Touched by an Angel). Some of these commonly held conceptions are not supported by scripture. There are no indications of angels appearing in female form. Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

1597 | What of Paul | 1 Cor 1:1 | BradK | 76729
Hello Julie and welcome to the Forum. Your question is a good one, and one that time will only allow me to give a brief response:-) You said you call yourself a Christian? Does that mean that you have placed your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior? Along with that, I'd ask if you trust the Bible as the Word of God? ( John 17:17) Paul was "called as an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God" (1 Cor. 1:1) He was the apostle to the gentiles, Romans 11:13. As I believe in the unity of scripture, I'd challenge the assertion that Paul "is a false teacher" based upon his inspired authorship of 13(14 if we include Hebrews) of the 26 NT books. To learn something of Paul from a biblical basis, I might encourage you to read Acts 9-28, and at least the opening chapter of each of his epistles (Romans through Philemon). As to him having never met the Lord Jesus, Paul claims he "received it (the gospel) through a revelation of Jesus Christ" ( cf Gal. 1:11-18) Other helpful references could include Eastons' Bible Dictionary. Pauls' own testimony regarding Christ speaks volumes! "For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake."(2 Cor. 4:5) "For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." ( 1 Cor.2:2) I hope this helps, Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |

1598 | Should I Look For Another Church? | Heb 10:25 | BradK | 76487
Dear Prisygrl7, I can only offer some general observations as I don't have personal knowledge of your situation. First of all, why have you not attended this church for the last year? Secondly, I would strongly encourage that you meet with the Pastor personally to discuss your concerns. There are two sides to the issue! Before you seek another church, commit the situation to the Lord and seek His guideance (Prov. 3:5-6). Remember to follow the admonition in Hebrews 10:25, to "not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some..." Lastly, as a personal recommendation, I'd limit my exposure to TBN! Don't use it as a substitute for personal interaction and fellowship with other believers in a local assembly. Speaking The truth In Love, BradK |

1600 | OT covenant vs. NT covenant | Heb 10:1 | BradK | 75061
Dear sept14child, In answer to your question I would recommend you continue your reading into Hebrews 10:1-26. The essential difference as I see it, is a contrast between OT Law and NT Grace. Salvation-always having been by grace- was manifested in the OT as faith "evidenced by works" as we see of Abraham in Genesis 22:1-10 and Hebrews 11:17. You had to perform to inheret the blessing. By contrast, we are "...blessed with all the spiritual blessings in the heavenlies IN CHRIST." (Eph. 1:3). Accordingly, now we have, "For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love."( Gal.5:6) A bit oversimplified, maybe, but I feel this will give you a further foundation for your own study and understanding.
