Personal Note .................................... Dear Praisemaster, I tried to follow your last post, and I think the overall idea was that was out of line to interupt your conversation with EdB, and that your answer was not inappropriate. It seemed that you felt your answer was justified because many people had attacked Casiv in the past and so you were defensive. First of all, I believe that it was my business to respond to your post even though it was in answer to EdB. This is a public forum, and therefore, anyone has the right to respond to any post, if they have a thought to share. Second of all, I agree that Casiv has been attacked in the past. However, that doesn't make it right to attack back (Romans 12:17-18). As a Christian, it is my reponsibility to hold my fellow believers accountable by at least making them aware of actions that appear to be contrary to the will of God. In the end though, it is the Holy Spirit who convicts. If you search your heart with an openness to His leading, I imagine that He will have something to say to you. However, if the Holy Spirit does not lead you to see that you have responded in an un-Christ-like manner, then there's nothing that I personally can do about it. |

142 | Why do people lose interest and leave? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 21517
Clarification of Purpose ........................ Dear Forumites, This last post of Lionstrong's (seconded by Charis) seems to be somewhat directed towards myself. When I first discovered this forum many months ago, I was impressed with the extent of solid Biblical training and knowledge exhibited by many of the members here. I also quickly realized how valuable of a resource this forum had the potential to be for people all over the world seeking truth in general and answers to specific questions. Since joining that time, I have tried to do my part to contribute and to make it an even better place. I have suggested several improvements that could either be accomplished by Lockman or on a voluntary basis by ourselves. I have also tried at times to mend rifts between members and point out times where individuals have not been excellent examples of Christ. This last thing seems to be the main complaint of Lionstrong and Charis in this last post. My question for you all is whether you agree with them. I believe that, as a fellowship of believers, we are called to accountability. I believe that we should hold each other to the standard set by Christ. Conviction comes from the Holy Spirit, but we can at least point out where to look for it. However, perhaps this is not what everyone else thinks. I would appreciate all input as to whether it has been and is wrong for me to attempt correction in love of my brothers and sisters. Or have I done it in an unloving manner? |

143 | Why do people lose interest and leave? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 21522
Clarification .................................. Dear Charis, It appears that I have not been clear in my intentions about this book study thing. I see this in virtually the same way that Tim Moran does. It is completely voluntary. No "leaders" are appointed per se. I am just encouraging members who are respected here already (including yourself) to consider providing a commentary on a Biblical book. I am not proposing rules about this that must be followed. All of these ideas (ie. making a first response to the primary notes so that they don't build up), are merely suggestions that seem to make sense to me. People may or may not follow them with no punishments attached. In fact, no one has to do anything, if they don't want to. It just seems that this would help to give our forum some new direction, and continue to develop it as a resource for Biblical study. I also really don't think that having discussion on a book or several books of the Bible, in addition to our typical questions, will take all the fun out of the forum. |

144 | Why do people lose interest and leave? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 21526
Clarification .................................. Dear EdB, I guess, I just don't see why this would have to be so complicated. It seems to me that the present forum format is fine for doing a study of a book. A person would just write a primary note attached to each verse of interest, and people could respond to it. I don't know why there would need to be a seperate section devoted to this type of thing with sublinks and all that. Also I don't know that there needs to be any control over it. Everything that is posted would appear on the general forum, so that anything controversial would be responded to from both sides. I think it's really simpler than it may at first appear. |

Personal Note ................................. Dear Serenetime, Thank you for your most recent post. It explains very well how much of this confusion has come about. I also appreciate your willingness to recognize that although others have made mistakes, many of them also come from your husband (Praisemaster) and Casiv. Secondly, I would agree with you that (of the three of you) your posts have more of a "serene spirit" to them and are more easily understood. I hope that you will talk with your husband (Praisemaster) and Casiv, and help them to post with a similar amount of clarity. It is nice to know what your screen name comes from as well. Thirdly, I would highly recommend that in the future, more care be taken for each of you to log in under your respective user names. It really gets confusing otherwise :) Finally, as for my forgiveness, you have it. If Jesus Christ was willing to die on the cross for your sins (and mine), then the least I can do is be willing to give you a fresh start on a forum. |

147 | Marriage to a Catholic? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 21706
An Answer and a Question ........................ Dear JMR, In my opinion, the location of a wedding is not a moral issue. It is not wrong to get married in a Catholic church, or even in a courthouse for that matter. There are some related issues that could be a problem. Depending on the Catholic church, you might have to become a member of their church to get married there. Are you willing to do that? I fully believe that it is possible for a Catholic to be a Christian, but there are some specific teachings of the Catholic church which most protestants would not be willing to agree with. A final question is more personal. Just over a month and a half ago, you mentioned that the marriage would be about 3 years from then. Now it seems like you are already in the planning stages. Why the appearantly sudden shift in time tables? |

Personal Note ................................... Dear David, Thanks for responding to my question. I appreciate your reasons for leaving, and completely agree with you that the Forum should be a supplement, not a replacement, for individual Bible study. I also understand your frustration that some questions seem to never die (Baptism, Free Will, Cain's Wife, etc.). However, I have been encouraged that recently some new ground is being covered on the forum. Tim Moran is leading a study of the book of 1 Peter, Nolan Keck is planning on doing the same for 1 John, and I plan to begin a study on a book as well (when I finish my study on finding God in nature). |

149 | So when did "evil" start? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 22724
Please do a search ............................... Dear Lisa, Greetings, I have enjoyed reading your posts recently. I just wanted to let you know that there has already been some good discussion regarding so called "lost books" of the Bible. If you do a search at the upper right corner, you'll find some interesting posts ont he subject. The basic idea is that these books were never really lost, but were just left out of the Bible for good reasons. Many of them are of questionable source to begin with, and most of them contain material which is contradicted in the Bible itself. Most importantly, they are not believed to be inspired by God. Some of the previous posts include links to places on the web where you can read them for yourself. I hope this helps out. |

150 | Are new worship songs scripturally OK? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 22726
Definition of "Worship" ........................... The dictionary defines the word worship as "to honor a divine being or supernatural power" It defines the word honor as "recognition of one's right to great respect or to any expression of such recognition". Therefore, in the English language, a person is "worshipping" God by expressing their recognition of God's worthiness. This could be done by singing the hymn "Holy, Holy, Holy" for instance. I understand that Searcher has a very rigid definition of the word worship, however, the vast majority of Christians and members of this forum believe that falling prostrate before God is only one, of many, ways to worship God. |

151 | Should we redefine terms? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 22857
Should we redefine terms? ..................... There have been a couple of ideas in recent posts from different members of our forum that have basically made statements using words to mean something different than normal. For instance, one member uses the word "rational" to mean something other than basic intelligence. Another member uses the word "worship" to mean only a specific form of expressing reverence towards God (in a prostrate position). The problem with this is that on a forum such as this, where we all are reading these posts in one language, English, we have to assume that people are using words similarly. Thus we can go by the dictionary definitions of words to interpret what a person posts. This doesn't work if the person posting has their own private definition of the words that they use. Do others see this as being a potential problem? Would it be a good idea for us all to point out when we do this ourselves? For instance, a person could write, "I don't believe that God cares for us. This is because my definition of care is to worry about someone's well-being, and God doesn't worry." This could prevent much misunderstanding in my opinion. What do you all think? |

152 | So when did "evil" start? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 22894
Clarification ................................... Dear LisaMarie, I recommended that you do a search on this topic. Obviously, you did not do that. If you had, you would have found the following posts (among many others) which are clearly speaking about the exact same books that you are talking about. For your convienence, I'll just quote several of my distinguished colleagues on this subject. 1. "Fortunately, there aren't any lost books of the Bible. There are apocryphal and pseudepigraphal which were excluded from the Old and New Testament canons. There are also gnostic writings found at Qumran. However, there isn't any historical evidence that any of these three classes of writings belonged in the Bible. Now, there are some that think some of these belong, but it is pure speculation. For instance, many liberal scholars love the Gospel of Thomas because of its New Age style theology. If you want to read some of these various kinds of texts, you can go to: http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/(tilde)humm/Resources/Texts/index.html Note: put a 'tilde' where you see the (tilde) in the adress above. These are interesting historical texts to read, but please remember that they are not Scripture. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran" 2. "There are several "lost" books; the "Gospel of Thomas" is probably the most infamous. There is also a "Gospel of Peter", a "Gospel of Mary [Magdalen]", "Pistis Sophia", and a few others. There is also a hypothetical Gospel named "Q" which is not known to exist in any form. Copies of many of these were found in Egypt at Nag Hammadi in 1945. Liberal theologians are making a lot of noise about the "discovery" of these "lost" books despite that fact that most of them have been known and their authenticity and claims refuted for more than 100 years. The reason these books were "lost", of course, is that they espoused heretical views - mostly gnosticism - that the early church firmly rejected. They are now presented as equivalent or even superior to the NT, revealing "alternate Christianities". The appeal is obvious: if you don't want to be accountable to a Jesus who sits in judgment, just hang out with one who learned his stuff in India. If you are prepared to believe that Jesus was a Buddha (please say you're not!), you may enjoy them. I recommend "Hidden Gospels: How the Search for Jesus Lost Its Way" by Philip Jenkins (Oxford University Press, 2001). Hope you find this helpful. stjones" 3. "Hi and Welcome to the forum! From time to time there are have been those that pop up and say they have found a lost book of the Bible. However God in His faithfulness has completed and preserved the Bible through centuries without fail. Or in other words there is no lost book of the Bible. Those that have claimed to be are the Gospel of Thomas, Book of Enoch, Book of Jasher, Book of Isaiah II, and at one time or another most of the books of the apocrypha. However after close examination all have been found to fail to meet the requirements of the Cannon of the Bible. And many have been declared actual frauds. As I said the Bible is complete. Hope this helps. EdB" |

153 | Should we redefine terms? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 23363
Personal Note ................................... Dear Searcher, You seem to agree that "there are times we need to explain what we mean". In that case, would you also agree that those times would include times when one regularly used a word in a different sense than either the dictionary or the vast majority of forum members? |

154 | Should we redefine terms? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 23536
Personal Note .................................... Dear Searcher, Thanks my friend. I think that it would help if this were made more clear in the future. An added benefit of you saying "worship (which Searcher believes to be specific to prostrate submission to God)" is that myself and others then shouldn't feel compelled to contradict, becuase it clearly states that it is your opinion. |

155 | So when did "evil" start? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 23537
Defense of my recommendation ................. Dear Lisa, Let me first say that I did not intend to be rude to you. I have found your posts overall to be heartfelt and Biblically sound. I also am a strong supporter of treating all forum members with respect regardless of our feelings towards them. Therefore, I certainly did not mean to hurt your feelings with my last post. At the same time, I still feel that my original recommendation for you to do a search on your topic before asking further questions on it was appropriate. I understand that you don't have time in the day to take "every person's recommendation". However, that particular one happens to be a guidline established by the people who provide this site. In addition, it just makes sense to see what information is already available before asking a question that comes across as redundant. |

156 | So when did "evil" start? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 23540
Contrary View .................................. Dear Lisa, You asked how many people on this forum are "bible scholars with credentials". I honestly don't know. However, I know many of them are pastors of churches. Several have seminary training. Several have a solid background in the original languages of the Bible. And all deserve respect and at least a good hearing of their ideas. If I understand your post, the idea seemed to be that we should read "extra-Biblical" texts because they too were inspired by God, but were not included in the Bible because "the compilation of the book (Bible) was still in the hands of man". I fundamentally disagree with this position. This topic has also been discussed on this forum (do a search for "inspired consensus", and check out the thread: how inspired is the NASB today). |

Personal Note ................................... Dear Nolan, I too will have to leave shortly, and will not be able to post again after that, until next week. I hope you have a terriffic Thanksgiving, my good friend. I also would like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all my other distinguished Forum colleagues. Take time to thank the Lord for all the blessings that He has generously given us. |

159 | Why does everything happen in thirds? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 24076
Personal Note .................................... This is actually less of a coincidence than it at first appears. All numbers whose digits add to a multiple of three are evenly divisible by three. (ie. 45's digits add to 9 and 45 is evenly divisible (3 X 15)). Because of this, all of the numbers you tried (111, 222, 333, 444, etc.) must also be divisible by three. This is simply because they are all three digit numbers where all digits are the same. Thus when the digits are added together they are all multiples of 3 (times whatever digit it is). |

Personal Note ................................... Dear Ray, I wish I could help you more, but I too am limited in my mathematical knowledge. I haven't taken a math class since way back in High School. However, I'll tell you what I know. As for the "father of math", I guess in one sense the answer would be God. He deffinately created a universe which contains many mathematical properties. As for the first human being that I am aware of that did much work with math, it would be Pythagoras (c.575 - c.500 BC) "Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher and mathematician, best known for working out the 'Pythagorean Theorem' stating that the square of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos, migrated to southern Italy, and established a school at Croton. Pythagoras taught that the order of the world was to be discovered with the aid of mathematics, physics, acoustics and astronomy. His famed saying was 'all is number' meaning that all existing things can be ultimately reduced to number relationships. His mystical teaching accepted the migration of souls."
