142 | is there security of the believer | Rom 8:39 | Sir Pent | 116893
Multiple beliefs on this subject..................................... The belief that Hank is proposing in this thread is commonly referred to as "once saved, always saved". There are large numbers of Christians who believe that it is true that a person who has truly been saved cannot ever completely turn away from God and lose their salvation. There are also large numbers of Christians who believe that it is possible for a person to become a true Christian, and then later in life to change their mind and decide to reject God and His salvation. I believe that this second option is true (search for post number 15952). Those who believe this second option are often concerned by the verses Hebrews 6:4-6, and wonder if they can ever return to God after rejecting Him. I and other Christians believe that it is still possible to return to God (see post 257332). For anyone reading these posts, please keep in mind that both perspectives are considered to be orthodox. In other words, both are reasonable interpretations of scripture and have been accepted throughout centuries of church tradition. Therefore, please try to read support for both sides before coming to your own conclusion. |

145 | Reconciling Rom 8:39 with Heb 10:26 | Rom 8:39 | Sir Pent | 116618
Agree to disagree................................................... Hello again Kalos, I am beginning to lose track of who I have interacted with since my return to the forum. But in case you are not one of those yet, I would just like to say that it is good to see you're still here :) As for this discussion, I think that we'll have to agree to disagree. You obviously interpret the verse one way, and have quoted a couple sources that agree with you. I think that Tim Moran's interpretation is more accurate. However, you'll have to hash that out with him. I do not have the language expertise that he has, and could not defend his post nearly as well as it deserves. Read post number 25332 again and take time to think about Morant61's points. |

146 | Reconciling Rom 8:39 with Heb 10:26 | Rom 8:39 | Sir Pent | 116615
Referral to another thread.......................................... There is an excellent post by Tim Moran that gives the best (in my opinion) interpretation of Hebrews 6:4-6 passage that you are talking about here, regarding IMPOSSIBLE REPENTANCE. Please type in the number 25332 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. |

147 | can you sleep with a non christian boy? | 2 Tim 2:22 | Sir Pent | 116613
My answer............................................................ Hello Clem, You should not sleep in a bed with a person of the opposite gender unless you are married to them. That would be true whether the other person is a Christian or not. As a Christian, you are a representative of Jesus and an example to the world. What kind of testimony will you be giving if you are known to sleep in bed with this boy? Would Jesus sleep in a bed with a girl? Clearly, He would not. What is your motivation? Why would you want to do this anyway? |

Try to compare apples to apples..................................... Hello again Ptgard05, You are correct that there are more homosexuals than kleptomaniacs. However, there are many more people committing adultery than there are homosexuals. So don't belittle Hank's post by picking and choosing. |

149 | read last statement | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116567
I'll answer your question, will you answer mine?................. Hello again Ptgard05, Your post about your relative was written after mine, however, I have read it now. I understand that you believe your relative to be honest, but that does not change the fact that his claims and personal experience have not been proven in respected scientific literature. Now how about my question. Since science is not definite on the issue, why do you question the Bible which is definite? Do you doubt the word of God because of the word of your relative? |

150 | i do believe..but this troubles me | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116564
Referral to another thread........................................... Hello again Ptgard05, You seem to be saying that the Bible that people read today can't be trusted to mean what it says. Do you really believe that God allowed His message to humanity to be so corrupted that the only way to understand it is to become fluent in ancient greek and hebrew and obtain copies of the original texts? This subject has been discussed before, and I would encourage you to type in the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. That post summarizes my thoughts as well as many others on this forum. You have previously stated that you believe that "the Bible is the ultimate truth". However, that doesn't mean anything if you are at liberty to take a verse that you don't like and say that the words there are wrong. Then YOU become your own ultimate truth. |

151 | i do believe..but this troubles me | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116554
Clarification....................................................... Thanks for responding Ptgard05, I never said that science has proven that people are not born with homosexual urges. You were the one who said that you had found "many medical studies to prove it that homosexuals are born that way", and I said that you were incorrect. Now you are saying that "the scientific field on this subject is limited and no definite answer has surfaced yet". That is correct, and is what I was trying to communicate to begin with. So since, science doesn't have a definite answer, why do you question the Bible which does have a definate answer? |

152 | How many yrs was promised to us to live? | Gen 6:3 | Sir Pent | 116549
My answer......................................................... Welcome to the forum Escottl, I think that the verse you are looking for is Genesis 6:3. It speaks of God lowering the normal lifespan of humans to 120 years. Although this is shorter than some of the lifespans of the first people, it is still longer than the "three scores" that you mentioned, which would only be 60 years. |

153 | i do believe..but this troubles me | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116526
Clarification...................................................... Hello again my brother in Christ, Please read my post carefully. I very specifically chose my words when I said that "people are not born in such a way that they are forced to COMMIT HOMOSEXUAL ACTS". (emphasis added this time) I agree with your "third alternative", but was trying to empasize in my post, the choice between the Biblical understanding and the scientific understanding. |

154 | i do believe..but this troubles me | Rom 1:27 | Sir Pent | 116521
My perspective as a scientist...................................... Hello Ptgard05, In you post you mentioned that the Bible condemns homosexuality. You also said that you believe that science has proven that homosexuals are born that way. Finally you correctly say that God wouldn't condemn someone for something that they were forced into from birth. That only leaves two possibilities. Either the Bible does not really condemn homosexuality (which you seem to be hoping and trying to prove), or people are not really born in such a way that they are forced to commit homosexual acts. It is interesting that you seem to doubt your understanding of the Bible more than you doubt your understanding of science. I am a scientist with my degree in Chemistry/Biology, and I work in research and development at a biotech company. I have also been a Christian for a very long time. Speaking with experience in both areas, I can say with confidence that you are correct in your understanding of the Bible and incorrect in your understanding of the science. |

159 | A distinction without a difference? | 1 Cor 12:10 | Sir Pent | 116339
A defense of "reformed" forum members......................... Let me begin by a few disclaimers: I do not agree with "reformed" theology, but rather fall into the Arminianist theological camp. I do not support needless forum dissention, but rather accept that it is healthy to have honest discussion from varying perspectives. I do not desire for this to discussion to be a stumbling block for those on the forum who are less mature, which is why I am posting it in this restricted thread. I do not mean to pick on the respected forum members (Morant61, Ray, Emmaus, and Hank) mentioned in this post. I am only trying to point out some observations purely as examples. Now to the defense: There seems to be 3 main criticisms of certain "reformed" members of our forum. 1 - The person is too argumentative 2 - The person is posting too much on the same subject 3 - The person is posting on a subject that is denominationally divisive The first point is the easiest. Whether a person is too argumentative is a very subjective thing. It often appears very differently depending on whether we agree with the person or not. I think that it is probably possible to make a case that anyone who has posted more than 200 times on this forum has been too argumentative at times. This is not a good reason to ban a person. The second point is also relatively easy. Each forum member has their own personal interest in certain aspects of Christianity and Bible Study. They naturally tend to focus on these areas in their posts. For instance, Morant61 has over 500 posts containing a derivative of the word "Greek". This is not a bad thing. It merely means that he has a strong interest in the original languages that the Bible was written in. Ray has over 600 posts containing a derivative of the word "Capital". This is also not a bad thing. It merely reflects his own personal study on which words in the Bible should be capitalized out of reverence to God. A large number of posts, or even a large percentage of a forum member's posts (30 percent in Ray's case), should not be grounds for kicking someone off the forum. The last point is the hardest to defend, due to the fact that the Forum clearly states a rule banning denominationally divisive subjects. There are certain members of this forum who believe one way on a particular doctrine of Christianity and others who fall in the opposing camp. The problem is that this forum seems to be inconsistent in its behavior towards the inevitable conflicts that therefore arise. Some topics that are denominationally divisive are allowed. For instance, Emmaus has posted almost 500 times containing a derivative of the word "Catholic". There is a lot of dissention between Catholics and Protestants, yet no one criticizes Emmaus. And if any topic has caused discord on the forum it would be "Cain's wife". Hank has posted almost 100 times with a derivitive of Cain, which has become his personal running joke. Yet although almost none of these posts contain any scripture, no one criticizes Hank. Therefore, it seems that the only denominationally divisive topic that is banned from discussion is that of the reformed perspective. This doesn't seem to be fair basis for kicking a forum member out either. |
