141 | defiling bodies by eating meat? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 187953
Angel72 - Are you asking about the Bible's teaching on eating meat, period; or are you extenting your question to the growth hormone controversy, or wider still, to encompass genetically engineered foods in general? If such a broad range is within the purview of your question, I'm afraid it takes us beyond the parameters of Study Bible Forum to address issues of this type on which, so far as I know, the Bible is silent. The issue becomes less a spiritual one than a nutritional or scientific one. There is a book on nutrition by a good friend of mine, Rex Russell, M.D., called "What the Bible Says About Healthy Living" that you might find to your liking. Dr. Russell is a regenerate believer in Christ and a practicing physician. ....... Since the time of the Noahic covenant (see Genesis 9:1-17), man has been free to eat animals for sustenance, although a distinction was made between clean and unclean animals even before the Flood (see Genesis 7:2, for example); and this distinction was specified in detail in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14. --Hank

Dear NightJay0044 - The Forum has benefitted from many of your questions over the years, and you have received responses to all of them which, it is hoped, have also benefitted you. But the question you have posed today, dear friend, being one that calls for personal counselling on a specific situation, is one that does not come under the canopy of questions that the Forum is designed or equipped to deal with. Therefore, it is recommended that you seek advice and counsel within your community, preferably from your pastor or other trained Christian counselor. We look forward to your continued active participation in Study Bible Forum. As ever, Hank.

chimney - I know of no such list. You might try contacting the translators/publishers at nasb@lockman.org. Or, if you were willing to invest considerable time and effort, you could make a line-by-line visual comparison between the old and the new renditions. --Hank
149 | Help for Christian Wife of Alchoholic | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 189735
Eileen - In addition to guidance and counsel from one's pastor or a Christian counselor, there are other local resources and organizations available to help families deal with alcoholics within their own family group. Many communites have chapters of Al-anon, an offshot of AA, whose purpose is to address the needs and concerns of family members of an alcoholic. The Bible never teaches that a spouse must submit to violence or abuse. But please insist that this Christian wife that you allude to in your question seek qualified help in her community. I can only imagine what she is going through in her struggles with an alcoholic husband. Unaddressed the problem will remain, and untreated the alcoholism will almost certainly grow worse. This Christian wife and her husband need help! --Hank
150 | Why the NKJV over the NASB ? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 189786
Hi, justme - Comparative sales rankings of the Bible versions tend to shift from time to time and also tend to vary depending on who's doing the ratings. I wandered around the web and found that the NIV still leads the pack. Coming in second, however, was the NKJV, which has apparently edged out the KJV fairly recently, moving the venerable old KJV to third. Coming in fourth was the New Living Translation, then the Holman Christian Standard Bible, and, in sixth place, the NASB Update. Rounding out the top ten, in seventh place was The Message (thumbs down!), followed by New Century Version, English Standard Version and New International Reader's Version. ...... What a change since I was a youth. Back then, the "Top Ten" positions were all held by the King James Bible.:-) It was essentially the only game in town then. ...... Among the current Top Ten, five of them are essentially literal translations and five are paraphrased versions. ...... One possible answer to your question about the surge in sales of the NKJV involves money -- money poured into advertising. Thomas Nelson, publishers of the NKJV, has spent a lot of money on sales promotion, just as Zondervan has on the NIV. ...... I would like to say a few words again on a subject about which I've written several times on this Forum. The NASB has been the object of what I consider unfair and inaccurate criticism concerning its style. It has been called "wooden," a term which a few critics of the NASB have used but don't bother to define what they mean by it. I doubt some of them know what they mean. They're just aping what some other critic said, and he probably didn't know what he was talking about either. But basically, as far as I'm able to put together what a few critics have said about the NASB, they seem to agree that while it's a trustworthy translation that's faithful to the ancient texts, it suffers because in its attempt to be literal it lacks natural English flow and syle. The pre-1995 update rendition was a bit "woody" in spots, I'll admit: some of its locutions were a trifle clumsy, awkward and stilted. But in the Update the team of translators and stylists did a creditable job of making the rough places smooth. It's a fine line to tread between stylistic excellence and translation excellence. The NASB philosophy always has been accuracy first, style second. By contrast, the parihrastic philosophy puts style first. I can't agree with the "wooden" critics, especially since most of them, I'm convinced, don't know good style from bad anyway. I recommend NASB Update without the slightest hesitation. It's possibly the best and most faithful Bible translation we have in modern English today. --Hank

Nkeiruka - Oh, I hope you're not talking about "seed faith" and all that other junk that goes with the 'name it and claim it' heresies that are so rampant today, especially on the TV tube! The Christian's motive should be centered on pleasing God, not on reaping personal benefit. What a shallow and empty faith it is that prompts one to do things out of selfish desire to please oneself instead out of a deep and abiding love for Him whose grace is boundless, whose love is beyond man's comprehension. From this well-spring of gratitude should flow our praise, our adoration, our obedience. We give, therefore, cheerfully and obediently to Him who commands us to do so: "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give, not grudgingly, or of necessity [compulsion], for God loveth a cheerful giver" (2 Cor. 9:7). --Hank
153 | What do the bible say about suicide? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 191212
DLorddaughter - Questions about suicide easily rank among the top 20 that are asked on SBF, so we think it best not to repeat the same answer over and over. So instead, here are two suggestions: (1) For a biblically based discussion of this topic, please go to http://www.gotquestions.org/suicide-Bible-Christian.html ..... (2) Use Search on this site and type in the word suicide. ...... Thanks for registering with SBF and welcome to it. --Hank
154 | Is there a Theological name for this? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 191275
Justme - One who sees some good points in both Calvinism and Arminianism is a Calvarminian. If you believe that, sir, come down to Arkansas and talk to me about investing in my snipe ranch. :-) ..... I don't think there is a theological term for what you describe, although I know you are not alone in agreeing with parts of both soteriological systems, because I do also. I think the gap between the two persuasions is not nearly so broad or deep as one may be led to believe when he is exposed to debates between what we might term the extremes of both, i.e., hyper-Calvinism and hyper-Arminianism. That's what nearly derailed this Forum some years ago. We had super-zealous extremists on both sides going at it with a vengeance that would have made a debate between the Pharisees and Sadducces look like a friendly game of checkers. ...... Calvinists can and do produce Scripture to back up their position. So with Arminians. Yet God wrote the Book, and He doesn't contradict himself. The conflict is not, therefore, in the mind of God but in the finite human mind, in that no human being has perfect understanding of the mind of God nor flawless interpretation of all Scripture. For example, the Bible teaches God's election and it also teaches man's responsibility. There are many things about the Bible that I, now 72, realize I do not understand. Yes, when I was much younger, I was convinced that I understood about all there was to know. More and more, the older I get, I am convinced that the major part of wisdom is not knowing everything but in having ability to recognize what one clearly does not know and the humility to admit it. I can identify with one far greater than I, the apostle Peter, who, when trying to meddle in things that were none of his business, was asked by our Lord, "What is that to thee? Follow thou Me." ...... Justme, I believe with all my heart that the burden of the follower of Christ consists not especially in choosing sides between these two isms but in letting what light God gives us shine before men in order to bring glory to God. And it certainly doesn't take a degree in theology to believe that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, and to teach it to others! Blessings to you, Justme of Missouri, from Hank of Arkansas.

157 | Hebrew language? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 192716
Mike - I browsed the web site; it looks interesting and legitimate. The information about the Hebrew language is probably accurate -- at least it appears to me that the people who put it together know their stuff. Learning any language well, even one's own native tongue, is difficult and calls for much study. In addition to majoring in English, I studied Latin and French in school and learned German in Germany under a tutor when I was in the military stationed in Stuttgart. I've never attempted to learn a language on my own without a teacher. I should think it would be enormously difficult to learn ancient Hebrew or any other language on the web. Such an undertaking would require a large amount of commitment and self-discipline. But if you have a knack for language, are sufficiently motivated, and are willing to shift your brain into over-drive and study hard, then go for it! If you have access to a university in your area that offers courses in biblical Hebrew or Greek, you might ought to check it out. One little caveat, if I may. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing so the old maxim goes, and one is not going to become an expert in Hebrew or anything else without many long hours of toil and sweat. Translators who become skilled enough to translate the ancient Hebrew Scriptures into English devote years to study. Now and again we have someone come on this Forum who is a self-appointed language expert based on nothing more than his ownership of a Hebrew or Greek dictionary! Please don't make that blunder. I wish you well, Mike. --Hank

159 | We can trust in the bible? | Bible general Archive 3 | Hank | 193173
Howierocker - Can we trust the Bible? A resounding yes, yes, yes. Absolutely. It's like asking, "Can we trust God?" because the Bible is the word of God. But don't take just my word for it. Do some research yourself. Here's a short article that you may like: http://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-corrupted.html ..... If you want to dig deeper, get a copy of Josh McDowell's "The New Evidence that Demands a Verdict." But nothing beats reading the Bible itself. Read it as much as you can, as often as you can, as open-mindedly as you can. It will lead you to a Person you can trust. No matter how much one trusts the Bible, it cannot save him. But it testifies of Him who can save, the Lord Jesus Christ. --Hank
