1281 | please explain verse | Heb 11:20 | BradK | 160094
Hi imforgiven, Let's look at the verse: "By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau, even regarding things to come." First, read the entire Chapter, 11 to gain the flow and context. Heb 11:1 states: "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." You're referring to the account in Gen. 27:39-40. Heb. 11:20 actually tells us it was, "by faith." Isaac looked forward to the promise - "concerning things to come". In other words, he did not see the fulfillment of what he blessed Esau. He did it in faith- believing God, "Now may God give you of the dew of heaven, And of the fatness of the earth, And an abundance of grain and new wine;" (Gen. 27:26-29). As Heb. 11:39 tells us, "And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised." Ihope this answers your question:-) BradK |

1282 | Receiving what you ask for | John 14:14 | BradK | 160041
Hi basbudy, I assuming that you're referring to either John 14:14, James 4:2 or 1 John 5:15? "If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it." "..You do not have because you do not ask." "And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him." It is in Gods' timing that we receive what we ask. Scripture doesn't specifically or definitively give us a time-frame in which to expect to receive. I believe that's why Phil. 4:6 was written: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." The "why" for this is given in the next verse: "And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." We might ask, Isn't the peace of God "receiving what we ask for?" I hope this helps, BradK |

1283 | one cannot be given a second chance | Rom 1:20 | BradK | 160021
Hi DanielP, How about these 2 verses: "For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse." (Rom. 1:20) "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Rom. 6:23) "And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment," (Heb. 9:27) Neither Christ nor any of the other writers of the NT give any reference to or support to a "second chance"! I hope this helps, BradK |

1284 | is it ok to live with your fiance?? | Heb 13:4 | BradK | 159794
Hi Amanda, I don't think God would approve based on Heb. 13:4 and 1 Cor. 6:18. Both my wife and I were believers at the time we were engaged and did not live together before marriage. Don't let your feelings dictate what you should know to be the right decision. Wait until marriage. I think the question to ask is this: are both of you born-again believers in the Lord? I would make certain to get your spiritual foundation right before you tie the knot. Hopefully you have a Pastor or know of some mature Christian couples whom you can seek advice from. Remember, there is wisdom in a multitude of counsellors! (Prov. 4:7, 9:9, 11:14) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

1286 | Hebrew Expert needed for Gen 3:7 | Gen 3:7 | BradK | 159360
Hi Pam, The technical stuff may not really help all that much, and I don't think it will answer your question. But... We have, "verb, niphal, imperfect waw consecutive, third person, feminine, plural" However, the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the OT) translates the Hebrew "opened" as dianoigo- which means to open up completely. We know it is a verb, passive mood, aorist tense. So, they were acted upon by an outside force at a time in the past. I hope this helps, BradK |

1287 | Genesis 3:6 do you know what does it mea | Gen 3:6 | BradK | 159329
Hi Hana, What leads you to ask this question? I don't see any direct application of this verse to us. However, the results of what happened in the garden of Eden are with us today. It is the disease of sin. C.H. Spurgeon said (in part) on this malady: "Worst of all, this disease causes death. There is no human being, in whom sin has not already caused spiritual death, and no one in whom it will not cause eternal death, unless God, in his almighty grace, shall prevent it. “The soul that sinneth, it shall die,” is a declaration that is only too terribly true. What that death will be, I shall not, at this time, attempt to show; but such words as these, coming from the lips of Christ, may tell you: “These shall go away into everlasting punishment,” “into the fire that never shall be quenched; where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched”. May none of you ever have to endure that death which never dies, — that dread eternal death, of which the Lord of life so positively speaks! Yet, as surely as God liveth, you will experience even that dread doom unless this mortal malady be healed." I hope this helps, BradK |

1288 | Do you think Adam and Eve would have | Gen 3:5 | BradK | 159325
Hi Hana, The answer to your question would require speculation since scripture is silent. However, we know what the serpent told them in 3:5 was a lie, "For God knows... you will be like God." Remember what God told them in Gen 2:17, "but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die." They were specifically told (commanded) by God NOT to eat of the tree of knowledge. So, the obvious answer is what God promised, that they would would die. If you recall, Rom. 6:23 states, "the wages of sin is death..." I hope this helps, BradK |

1289 | Hebrew expert needed - Gen 3:6-7 | Gen 3:6 | BradK | 159297
Hi Pam, Makarois gave you some good insight on this verse! A resident Hebrew scholar I'm not, but I do have access to great resources:-) The dictionary of Biblical Langauges says this about "eye" as it is used in Gen 3:5: "understanding, formally, eye, i.e., to come to understand as a mental perception." In verse 7, the word for eyes is given a good general understanding in the Theological Wordbook of the OT: "The eyes are depicted as spiritual faculties. After eating the forbidden fruit, the eyes of Adam and Eve were opened. They had lost their innocence, now being aware of their nakedness both physical and spiritual (Gen 3:5, 7)" The Commentary Critical says this: "Vs 5. your eyes shall be opened—His words meant more than met the ear. In one sense her eyes were opened; for she acquired a direful experience of “good and evil”—of the happiness of a holy, and the misery of a sinful, condition. But he studiously concealed this result from Eve, who, fired with a generous desire for knowledge, thought only of rising to the rank and privileges of her angelic visitants. Vs.6. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food—Her imagination and feelings were completely won; and the fall of Eve was soon followed by that of Adam. The history of every temptation, and of every sin, is the same; the outward object of attraction, the inward commotion of mind, the increase and triumph of passionate desire; ending in the degradation, slavery, and ruin of the soul (James 1:15; 1 John 2:16)." I hope this helps, BradK |

1290 | DOES THE BIBLE TALK ABOUT DINOSAURS? | Gen 1:24 | BradK | 159152
Hi mrmethod, Some things are just not specifically mentioned in scripture. However, Genesis 1:24-25 reads: "Then God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind"; and it was so. God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good." Job is the only biblical book to refer to what may have been dinosaurs (Hebrew “behemoth” and “Leviathan,” 40:15; 41:1). [Willmington's Bible handbook] I hope this helps, BradK |

1292 | what if you die and have not repented | Eph 1:7 | BradK | 159148
Dear 1soblessed, What makes you ask this question?. I think the better question is: Are you "In Christ" or not? Eph. 1:7 says "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace" If you've received Christ as your Lord and Savior, according to the Bible you have eternal life! (John 1:12, 3:16) I hope this helps, BradK |

1293 | Numbers 25 | Rom 13:1 | BradK | 159093
Hi Aliennow, I think I'm following you. Perhaps, your question can be answered by first acknowledging that God is sovereign (Ps. 115:3). The passage you refer to in Numbers 25 deals with Israel commiting harlotry. 25:4 tells us , "Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel." Romans 13:1-8 would be the NT reference that deals with your last question: "Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God." I hope this helps, BradK |

1294 | fifth verse of psalms 23 what is it | Bible general Archive 3 | BradK | 158856
Hi vbrascom, Here is commentary from C.H. Spurgeon in his work, The Treasury of David: "PSALM 23:5 - EXPOSITION Ver. 5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. The good man has his enemies. He would not be like his Lord if he had not. If we were without enemies we might fear that we were not the friends of God, for the friendship of the world is enmity to God. Yet see the quietude of the godly man in spite of, and in the sight of, his enemies. How refreshing is his calm bravery! Thou preparest a table before me. When a soldier is in the presence of his enemies, if he eats at all he snatches a hasty meal, and away he hastens to the fight. But observe: "Thou preparest a table, "just as a servant does when she unfolds the damask cloth and displays the ornaments of the feast on an ordinary peaceful occasion. Nothing is hurried, there is no confusion, no disturbance, the enemy is at the door, and yet God prepares a table, and the Christian sits down and eats as if everything were in perfect peace. Oh! the peace which Jehovah gives to his people, even in the midst of the most trying circumstances! "Let earth be all in arms abroad, They dwell in perfect peace." Thou anointest my head with oil. May we live in the daily enjoyment of this blessing, receiving a fresh anointing for every day's duties. Every Christian is a priest, but he cannot execute the priestly office without unction, and hence we must go day by day to God the Holy Ghost, that we may have our heads anointed with oil. A priest without oil misses the chief qualification for his office, and the Christian priest lacks his chief fitness for service when he is devoid of new grace from on high. My cup runneth over. He had not only enough, a cup full, but more than enough, a cup which overflowed. A poor man may say this as well as thosein higher circumstances. "What, all this, and Jesus Christ too?" said a poor cottager as she broke a piece of bread and filled a glass with cold water. Whereas a man may be ever so wealthy, but if he be discontented his cup cannot run over; it is cracked and leaks. Content is the philosopher's stone which turns all it touches into gold; happy is he who has found it. Content is more than a kingdom, it is another word for happiness." I hope this helps, BradK |

1295 | people assumptions is causing confusiuon | Rom 1:26 | BradK | 158800
Hi tew, Welcome to the Forum! In answer to your question, "Why do people assume this verse is referring to two women being together?" I don't know that it is assumed. I think the plain meaning of the text as well as the context make it pretty clear:-) I take it you are of the view that it is not? If so, how did you come to that conclusion? Tew, in all fairness as you are new to the Forum, it is not as much our job to disprove your viewpoint as it is yours to demonstrate your viewpoint as valid! Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

1297 | sexuall thigs in church? | 1 Cor 6:18 | BradK | 158369
Hi Jeff, Welcome to the Forum! You say you are a Christian, so I'll base my response on that. Your actions did not save you, nor will they cause you to not go to heaven. "He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit," My advice for you is 1 Cor. 6:18-20: "Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body." Jeff, you have been set apart by God for his intended purpose. You are bought with a price, so you need to stop doing what you know is wrong and start glorifying God in your body! I might also recommend reading and re-reading Romans 6 several times. Pray back the scripture to the Lord. Ask Him to reckon yourself to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord! Lastly, don't put yourself in this situation in the future. Avoid the opportunity to be tempted! I hope this helps, BradK |

1298 | What is "slain in the spirit"? | 1 Thess 5:21 | BradK | 158243
Hi Vernon, Welcome to the Forum! If you watch Benny Hinn, you get a good idea of what this phenomenon is- theatrically speaking. If you look in the Bible, you won't find it , because it's not there! I will go out on a limb to say this: it is a man-made, conjured up act that fits well the medium of television. PT Barnum couldn't have come up with a better gimmick to sell ministries and thereby make money. I hope this helps, BradK |

1299 | Regarding earlier post (thread) 156868 | 2 Tim 2:25 | BradK | 158129
Hi Jeff, Let me respond in part by referring you to my answer to Post ID 157737. "What we say matters and we should convey a Christ-like attitude and demeanor at all times. Sometimes we (and I) may fall short. From my perspective you have 3 catagories of people, in general: 1. Those who are serious and have come to seek, learn, and contribute; 2. Those who are "just passing through" so-to-speak; 3. Those who seek to disrupt and promote heresy The challenge is being able to discern, assess, and draw a quick conclusion based on only a few, if not just a single post! So, without making excuses or merely offering an apology, it is very difficult to determine who is serious and truly seeking an honest answer and who is merely playing games and being disruptive. Too often the bad outweigh the good. It is a problem inherent in a public Forum such as this. I think you'll find the heart of many, if not most of the "regulars" is to seek to honor and glorify the Lord by their participation." Again, from experience the "bad" seem to far outweigh the good and we spend far too much time defending sound doctrine than in serious Bible study! I don't think that the responses bordered on abusive. I stern, direct response is not improper or abusive. Experience is not the gauge of Biblical Christianity. I'll post some words by C.H. Spurgeon in addition to this as I think them highly revelvant! I hope this helps, BradK |

1300 | Do you believe in God? If so, then why? | Ps 19:1 | BradK | 158122
Dear agnostic, I believe in God, and His son, the Lord Jesus Christ, because the revelation about Them given in the Bible is undeniably true! He has revealed Himself to me is such a real way, that I cannot deny! My life has been changed 180 degrees by my relationship to the Lord. I cannot account for this by mere chance, coincidence, or personal effort. It is by the grace of God alone that I live. I hope this helps, BradK |
