121 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113979
Problem number 1............................ Hi EdB, Thanks for your response, but I have a couple problems with it. You seem to be saying that the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament was "on" people but not "in" them. However, Makarios brought up several references where the Holy Spirit was "in" people of the Old Testament (Gen 41:38, Num 27:18, Dan 4:8, 5:11-14) Makarios also brought up references where the Holy Spirit even "filled" people in the Old Testament (Ex 31:3, Ex 35:31). Admitedly, these are a minority of references to the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. Most of the time, He did come "on" people and not "in" them. However, it does show that this was not always the case. Another post in this thread referred to Gal 4:4-6, which refers to the Holy Spirit coming "into our hearts", which I don't think ever is mentioned in the Old Testament. Perhaps that is the true distinction that you are looking for. |

I need clarification................................ Hi Casiv, Thanks for the scripture referrance. I looked at that passage, and I want to make sure that I understand what you wanted me to learn from it. This is what I assume the passage is saying. God sent the Holy Spirit "into our hearts" because we were sons (Gal 4:6). We were sons because we were redeemed and adopted (Gal 4:5). We were redeemed and adopted through God sending His Son Jesus (Gal 4:4). Is this interpretation along the lines of what you were thinking? |

123 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113974
I need clarification................................. Hi Rowdy, If I understand you correctly, you are saying that God had to wait to send Jesus to Earth until humanity "grew up". And by "growing up" you mean that humanity stopped focusing on the physical world and started focusing on the spiritual world. I assume that you are also saying that God had to wait to send the Holy Spirit unitl this "growing up" happened as well. Am I understanding you correctly? |

I need more information.......................................... Hi Makarios, I'm a bit confused by your last post. You seem to be saying that the Holy Spirit's role has been expanded because He now fills ALL true Christians. So have His methods changed, or is He still doing the same things, just with more people? |

125 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113860
Looking for more information................................. Hi Jcsav, So you are agreeing with almost everyone that the Holy Spirit operates in people's lives differently in the Old Testament than it does now. My first question for you is "Why?" You said that in the Old Testament the Holy Spirit moved in people's lives to enable them to perform a service or accomplish God's plan. Doesn't the Holy Spirit still work in our lives to enable us to serve God and accomplish His plan? Your second point was that the Holy Spirit could not operate in His present method until Jesus's death on the cross. My two questions there would be "Why" and "Why so long"? Firstly, why did Jesus have to die for the Holy Spirit to operate in this expanded way? Secondly, if Jesus had to die first, then why wait so long to send Jesus? |

127 | Why did God wait to send the Holy Spirit | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113771
Wow, what a list............................................. Hi Makarios, I don't think I've ever seen so complete a list of places where the Holy Spirit was active in the Old Testament. Thanks for that excellent post. To focus on the original question, you seem to be saying that God didn't wait at all to send the Holy Spirit, but rather that He was there from the beginning. Do I understand you correctly that you believe that the Holy Spirit was available to people throughout time in the same way that He is to us today. I only ask because some of the other answers I have recieved seem to think that there is a difference in the way the Holy Spirit was available in the OT and how He is available now. But you brought up good scriptural references for the Holy Spirit "filling" and "indwelling" people even in the Old Testament. So perhaps the answer to "Why did God wait" is that "He didn't". |

I need clarification......................................... Hi Ray, You seem to be saying something similar to Mommapbs. You are saying there is a difference in how the Holy Spirit was on the people in the Old Testament (coming upon) and how the Holy Spirit is in us now (indwelling). I would ask you a couple of questions. Why would the Holy Spirit come differently to the people in the Old Testament than He does to us? Why would God wait so long to send the Holy Spirit in the "indwelling" sense. |

129 | Can anyone else answer this question? | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113768
Agree, but not the answer......................................... Hi BradK, You seem to be saying the same thing that Johnny said. I agree that God sent the Spirit in His own time, which was the fullness of time. But why was that point so late in humanities history. |

130 | Can anyone else answer this question? | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113767
I need clarification...................................... Hi Mommapbs, If I understand your answer, you are saying that the Holy Spirit can only dwell in people who are truly clean in the eyes of God. You seem to be saying that the people in the Old Testament who believed were not truly clean, and thus could not have the Holy Spirit in the way we can. Therefore, your answer is that the Holy Spirit couldn't come in fullness until after Jesus had been sacrificed to make us clean. This brings up 2 questions. The first is how could the Holy Spirit come on the prophets if they weren't clean? The second is if the Holy Spirit couldn't come until after Jesus, then why wait so long to send Jesus? |

131 | Can anyone else answer this question? | Joel 2:28 | Sir Pent | 113765
Agree, but not the answer.................................. Hi Johnny, I agree with you that God timing is perfect. My question is why was the "perfect" time so long after the world began. I also agree with you that God is not confined to our time. However, we are stuck in our time, so although waiting may not seem long to God, it sure does to us. Thanks again for trying to answer and for reminding us about the all mighty nature of God. |

132 | Premarital sex is a sin? | Heb 13:4 | Sir Pent | 113764
Personal Note............................................... Hi Monkman, Thanks for the update on your situation. I also greatly appreciate your ability to accept reproof and cousel. Prov 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory." I hope that you will continue to find victory as you grow with your home church and with your brothers and sisters in Christ on this forum. |

My answer............................................. Hello Gianna, I apologise for taking so long to respond, but I had a hard time thinking of a good answer to your question. Based on the additional information that you gave I would point you towards Luke 23:43. It says, "And He (Jesus) said to him, "Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise." This is something that Jesus tells to a man who is dying right next to him when Jesus is on the cross. This man next to him was actually a thief throughout his life and was being executed for it. However, at the very end of his life, this thief decided to believe in Jesus and worship Him. This shows that Jesus was willing to welcome into paradise a man who spent his life as a thief and turned around at the very end. How much more would he welcome your boss (who according to you was a great person) if your boss decided to believe in Jesus at the very end. I hope that encourages you to have hope for your boss, and also to examine your own life to see whether Jesus is still waiting for you to believe in Him so that you can join all the people in Heaven someday :) |

Referral to another thread..................................... Hello Arrow1, I don't want to get into the whole baptism discussion. However, I would like to point out that I do not believe that speaking the original languages makes someone more qualified to understand the Bible. I think that God has preserved the truth of the Bible all the way to our time and our language. For more information on this idea, please type the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen. |

Personal Note........................................ Hello EdB, Don't worry about it. I'm not upset in the least :) I apologize for answering in a way that came across as more authoritative than I have any right to be on this subject. My thoughts in this thread are simply educated guesses, and should be taken as such. As for the accuracy and authority of scriptural translations (such as the Septuagint), I whole-heartedly agree with you. In fact, I would hope that anyone wanting more thoughts on this subject would type in the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen. |

Defense of my answer............................................... Hello EdB, The King James Version of the Bible was written using words like "thee" and "thou" that have not been in common use for more than 100 years. However, although there are newer translations out there that are easier to read, some people still prefer the KJV. Similarly, I think we can assume that although there was a Greek translation available during Jesus time, that there were many people who prefered the old Hebrew texts. I think it is likely that the scriptures were still read in Hebrew at certain synagogues. And although the "common man" may have been more likely to be limited to understanding the Greek, the teachers of the law would definately be familiar with the older versions, just as many Bible scholars today study the original languages. Therefore, I think that it is a safe bet that Jesus would also have known the Hebrew language and be familiar with that version of the Old Testament writings. Finally, I would just like to say that it really doesn't matter very much what language Jesus spoke. We're all guessing, and the person who started this thread seems to have lost interest anyway. |

137 | Resurrection Sunday or easter? | Acts 12:4 | Sir Pent | 113261
Personal Note................................................... Hello my forever friend, I think that your post reflects wisdom and balance. I like the name "Resurrection Day" myself, but I agree with you that it's not worth worrying about. Instead we should focus on spreading the news of what Easter means in our lives and can mean in the lives of the people around us. |

Clarification.............................................. Hello EdB, You bring up a very good point. It is quite possible that Jesus did not primarily speak Hebrew. However, we know that the Old Testament books of prophecy and the Torah were written in Hebrew. And we know that Jesus had an extensive knowledge of them even as a small boy (teaching in the temple when he was 12 years old). And He was often quoting Old Testament scriptures throughout His ministry. Therefore, I think it is clear that He at least knew Hebrew and spoke it sometimes. I fully admit that it doesn't say specifically in the Bible. But these ideas seem to make sense based on the little information that we have. |
