121 | Is Deu 25:5, applicable to day? | Deut 25:5 | jlhetrick | 200909
Hey parpar- I'll get things started with some food for thought instead of simply answering the question with a yes or no (if that were possible). Consider first that we are saved by grace and not by following the law; and of course I don't read into your question that by "apply" you are referring to salvation. Just wanted to point it out. Next I think it's important to understand that not every promise in Scripture is for you and me, neither is every command. At least a brief explanation of what I mean here is necessary. Example - God promised "I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.: (Gen 22:17, NASB) He promised that to Abraham. In spite of what some say about claiming the promises found in Scripture, I can not claim that one. Now refer to the 15th chapter of Numbers for exhaustive example of commands from God that again were not given to us. Next we would have to ask why we would pull the Deu 25:5 passage out of it's context and have it apply to us today. If we think we come up with a satisfactory answer to that question then we would have to ask why we wouldn't use the same answer to require those things found before and after your passage. Things to consider: In fulfilling His promise to Abram (see Gen 17:7) God, through Moses, established a structure and a economy that saw to the welfare of Israel as a people. I'm of the belief that your passage (Deu 25:5) is part of the welfare policy (to put it in modern terms). Finally, you might go back and consider the passage about Onan's death. Not that you are wrong, I'm not saying that. But I believe there is more to it than just what Onan did not do. Onan's whole approach was selfish and deceitful in more ways than one. To men, Onan "pretended" to obey God. Did he also believe he was pulling a fast one on the all knowing creator of the universe? Are we ever guilty of the same? Hope this helps until some better skilled contributors post. God bless, Jeff |

123 | Is anyone else having problems? | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 200881
Justme- I have heard of that happening from time to time with no apparent cause. You should no too that some digital media that you copy and past from will give that error even though there are no visible "offending" characters. Probably something in the code of the program. One of the digital libraries I use is Logos Bible Software Series 3, Libronix. I regularly get the error when copying and pasting from that one although there is no visible offending character in the text (and sometimes it works fine). If you are copying and pasting from a digital format try pasting to your word processor first and choosing "save to destination format" (in the little clipboard icon that pops up at the end of what you just pasted for Windows/Word users). Then copy from the word processor and past on the forum (remembering to cite the source of course). This does take a couple more steps of course, but when you only have that source available in that one program, and ther is more than a few lines you want to include it will be helpful. Jeff |

125 | What of the Law applies to me a believe? | Romans | jlhetrick | 200829
Hi MJH- Forgive me for not understanding your dilemma. It really seems quite simply answered from Scripture. Instead of articles and such, perhaps your search might finally take you back to them. What of the Mosaic Law "applies" to you. It all does insofar as it contributes to your discerning God. None of it does in relation to your position of righteousness before God. Instead of articles, I would point you to the book of Romans. That single letter will answer this question for you completely. Rom 6:14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace. (NASB) Hope this helps, Jeff |

126 | Doe sGod hear prayer of unbeliever | Psalm | jlhetrick | 200808
Zinna- Welcome to the Forum. It's not my intention to play on the semantics of your question, but God "hears" everything. Matt 10:29 (NASB)"Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father." As demonstrated in this verse and the context in which it is found, Scripture shows the total sovereignty of God. There is nothing outside of His will and control. In response to your question sister Azure asked an important one of her own. Having spent years working in hospitals, I believe that lots of people who are not believers do actually pray. The question is, what's the point? If they don't believe what is the point of praying (learned behavior) and with what faith are they attempting to petition God. Truth is, Sunday morning church services have unbelievers participating in prayer on a regular basis. What we can be assured of is that God does hear the prayers of the saints (all true believers, saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ) Rev 5:8, 8:3-4. We also know that God's answer to those prayers will be according to His purpose and will and not necessarily what we are asking for. Is there more to your question? Are you a believer in God? Have you been saved by His wonderful Grace through faith in Jesus Christ? Jeff |

127 | taking the name of the Lord in vain | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 200415
LindaE- First of all, welcome to the Forum. You have provided sufficient Scripture. If your coworker is not convinced by God's own words you shouldn't expect that you will have additional influence. As the verse in Exodus states- God will not leave it unpunished. When the bible speaks so clearly there is, in my opinion, no need to supply a longer list of verses. Exodus 20:7 is straight forward and there is no need to develop an argument beyond the simply stated. As for your being upset I might suggest that you be comforted in that you have provided sufficient Scriture and the issue is between your coworker and God. It may be that your work place has policies that prevent employees from using language and other behaviors that are offensive and/or disruptive to others. You might ask politely for him to stop using the language in your presence and point to the policy. If the behavior continues you would be right in reporting the issue to your supervisor. Remember, our witness is not what we can influence others to believe or cooperate with. It is the standard established by God's word lived out in our lives. Your providing the Scripture, and being consistent in living what you preach will be the most important, I believe, if God chooses to reach this person through you. With the right approach this works. If I walk into the break room or anywhere else where people are familiar with me at the hospital where I work they will stop telling the dirty joke until I leave (if that is what they were doing). This was accomplished over time, gently, and without making any "enemies" or creating tension (as best I can be aware). Everyone who knows me at work knows that if they ask me anything on social issues, politics, and most any other subject they are going to get a biblical answer as best I can deliver it. There is no shortage of questions directed my way as there is no shortage of lost, searching soles. Not too long ago I was told by a coworker "now we don't need to hear about that..." as I and two other coworkers were discussing Scripture and morality over lunch. I responded with something to the effect that we all need to hear about that but that I respected her right to choose not to. I invited the other two to my office for the remainder of lunch leaving the one nurse alone to enjoy her lunch without having to listen to Christians talk about God's word. No harm personally and no hard feelings (that I'm aware of). I should stop here so that I'm not appearing to give advise beyond the obvious ending up in violation of the Terms of Use and intended purpose of the Forum. Hope this was helpful, Jeff |

130 | reincarnation or not? | John 3:7 | jlhetrick | 200054
Martin- Welcome to the Study Bible Forum. Your question is one that has been asked, debated, argued over and otherwise extensively discussed to include here on the Forum. In the top righthand of your home screen you will find a "Search" box. Enter the word reincarnation and you will have an abundance of reading on the topic. Some other pointers to keep in mind if you will. Believers in Christ are feferred to as Christians, not Cristians so that might be helpful. Also, it's important to understand that our beliefs, while sometimes declared through doctrinal statements and such, are never the result of council decisions. The Truth as found in Scripture alone is the substance of our doctrines. In other words; we don't use Scripture to support what we believe. Our beliefs are to be established by Scripture. With this in mind we can properly put these things into perspective. The Church, in It's doctrinal statements, is not making statements of truth but rather acknowledging the truths of Scripture in It's statements. Hope that makes sense. One other helpful point. When you choose to quote or otherwise refer to the work of others (such as "Christian Councils in this case) it is always appropriate to give proper credit. In this case, nameing the council. Otherwise, language such as "some cristian counsil" may be interpreted as being sarcastic and rude. Hope this is helpful; and oh by the way. Scripture is very specific about the condition of both man's sole and body as it relates to eternity. Do your own careful study and you will find the answer to the question. Reincarnation not! God bless, Jeff |

136 | why dose the Lord let people suffer? | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 198473
Hello again katka- there are many different causes/reasons why people suffer. One cause of suffering that may correlat with your question is SIN. To get a better understanding of Sin and suffering you might start by asking some basic questions. To start with: 1. What is sin? (You can answer this in gereral terms to begin with.) 2. How is a person's relationship with God effected by Sin? 3. What does it mean (concerning people and sin) that God is JUST? One important point to make here is that a good understanding of who you are (as a fallen, sinful person) and who God is will only come through seeking God through prayer and study of His word. Point being, it's good to ask these questions and to consider the responses of others; but, you ultimately need to search the Scriptures in prayer. Hope this helps as my lunch time is now up. God bless, Jeff |

137 | Sanctification when and how? | Phil 2:10 | jlhetrick | 198469
LJ777- Generally speaking "sanctification"refers to the process through which God makes a believer "holy". I can't say for sure when the process begins but again speaking generally it is safe to say that it is underway at the time a person is saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Of course, if we were to get very detailed and specific (which time and space doesn't allow for here) we can consider that working of God that is occurring prior to that point in time when He ultimately causes our will to agree with His resulting in our being justified in Chirst. Because the process is entirely the work of God, it is not something we can "stop" and "start" over again. That is, God is in complete control of it and sanctification is accomplished independently of our own efforts. Put simply, I can do nothing to make myself holy and neither can I do anything to ultimately frustrate God's decision and working in me to make me holy. Finally though, I do understand the referenced passage, Phil 2:10-16 to suggest that we can frustrate the process when we willfully disobey God; that is to say we can make the process more troublesome for ourselves through disobedience. In verse 12 where Paul commands to "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" he is careful to explain in the same sentence that it is actually God Himself who is doing the work. The fear and trembling, as I understand it, is the caution to always seek God's will and cooperate with His plan and guidance. Otherwise, we find ourselves out of His will and in need of correction and discipline, Rev 3:19 for example. Try doing a word search in the "Search" box in the upper right of your screen. Try searching topics including "sanctification" and "justification". Hope this was helpful as my lunch break is nearly over. God bless, Jeff |

138 | other planets wich people live? | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 198467
katka- The Star Trek and Star Wars movies are fiction, i.e. made-up stories. The ONLY source from which we can for sure know the truth about Creation is the holy Scriptures, God's word. God's word doesn't mention other inhabited planents and doesn't give any reason to believe that they exist. Ask your friend which Mormon Temple he/she attends. Jeff |

139 | Can you define or explain II Tim 4:7? | 2 Timothy | jlhetrick | 192495
Hello Doris- Welcome to the Forum! A couple of things are helpful in understanding the verse; context and history. Looking at history first-it is traditionally held that Paul was in fact martyred (be-headed) shortly after having written this letter to Timothy. The letter was written in prison and Paul likely knew from his captors as well as the Spirit's witness to him that his time was finished on earth; "...the time for my departure has come." (vs. 6). Looking at the context we see Paul speaking to those things that represent a life lived faithfully in Christ. Not being ashamed of and enduring suffering for the gospel (1:8); retaining and guarding the soundness of the treasure of God's word (1:13,14) being strong in Grace (2:1) are just a few examples from what was earlier written in the letter. Chapter 4 begins with a ceremonious charge to Timothy of what is expected of him as well as a specific warning of what it will look like for those who would not hold to the standard and truth of the gospel. The "fight" in vs. 7 is that familiar to all Christians. The battle of our flesh as it wars against the spirit and the struggle to not be swayed by those things that comfort the flesh. When Paul says that he fought the good fight, finishing the course having kept the faith he is speaking to all these things. He is not bragging, but encouraging Timothy (and us) that the Spirit of God is able to bring us through whatever experiences we might have in this life on earth. In the wider context of Paul's writings there is no mistaking how he was able to say these things. He clearly teaches that the accomplishments and success to the end was the result of God's grace and by the power of His Spirit alone. Hope this helps, Jeff |
