121 | Can I come home again, or apostate? | Luke 15:24 | Sir Pent | 60888
Encouragement ...................................... Welcome to the forum GJH, I understand your concerns regarding the loss of salvation. I too, rejected Christ's forgiveness at one point in my life, after I had already been a Christian for many years. I shared some of these concerns on this forum in the past, and received a very good answer from Tim Moran. I would encourage you to read that thread. Just do a quick search (top right) for the number 25332. God bless! |

122 | Consuming alcoholic beverages: ok or not | Deut 14:26 | Sir Pent | 60868
A Different View ........................................ Welcome to the forum Tepridemore. I personally believe that it is wrong for a Christian in America to drink alcohol. There have actually been some very good discussions on Christian consumption of alcohol. I would strongly recommend that you take a little time to read some of what is written. A great place to begin your search would be to do a quick search (top right corner) for the number 10288. |

123 | Justify Leviticus 20:13 | Lev 20:13 | Sir Pent | 60240
Warning, this thread does not appear to be a question of someone truly seeking to learn about the Bible. It seems to just be one persons attempt to stir up trouble and insult Christianity.
124 | How do they relate | Matt 12:29 | Sir Pent | 59962
My interpretation ......................................... Prayon, I interpret Jesus comments here in the context of the accusation which preceeded them. The religious leaders were accusing Jesus of working for Satan “He cast out demons by Beezelbub”. Jesus defends himself by saying that a house divided against itself shall fall, and by this analogy of the “strong man’s house”. ......................................... In the analogy, the “house” is the person who Jesus is casting demons out of. The “goods” are the demons themselves. The “strong man” is Satan. Jesus seems to be simply saying that it is not possible to take goods out of someone’s house unless you tie up the person first. Therefore, He is not working with the Devil, but is directly opposing Him. |

126 | is selling in a church building fine? | John 2:13 | Sir Pent | 59243
I’m going out on a limb here to disagree with a practice that is becoming common in many churches in America today. That practice is selling food in the church. I believe this is wrong for many reasons. From most important to least important: 1. The true purpose of a church service is to worship God as a family of believers. The service is FOR GOD, not for people. When churches put on elaborate entertainments, and let people bring popcorn into the sanctuary, they are profaning a holy place and turning a worship service into just a show. 2. The Bible warns us as Christians to not only avoid evil, but even the appearance of evil. Even if the proceeds of the sale of food does go into the Mission Fund or whatever, many people (especially visitors) will not know that. With all of the scandals that have been so publicized about Christian ministries embezelling large amounts of money for their own personal gain, it would be very easy for them to jump to some wrong conclusions. 3. The food will cause division within the church. There will be some who think it is wrong and others who will think it is right. There will be some who buy it and are satisfied, and others who will not have the money and will be hungry and envious. There will be some who are honest and turn in all the money, and others who will give in to temptation and will keep some for themselves. There will be some who will try to pay attention to the service, and there will be others who will be crinkling the wrapping, or crunching the chips, and making it difficult for those around to focus. 4. It’s good for us all to be able to spend a few hours once a week focusing on God, instead of our stomachs. 5. There’s six other days in the week, when you could have a bake sale out in the parking lot, to raise money. |

129 | Feel so lonely and down over this burden | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 59239
Mae64, I hurt for you that you feel alone and unsupported during this very difficult time in your familiy's life. You are correct that the Family of God should be there for you. The Bilbe commands us to "weep with those who weep". I would guess though, that there are friends in your church who do care about you and just don't know how to express it in a way that will not cause more hurt. Often people are trying to put themselves in your shoes, and knowing that they would feel sad and embarrassed by the situation, they think that it would only make you feel worse to talk about it. This is the wrong response, but perhaps this will give you some insight into the thoughts behind their actions. As for advice, I would suggest approaching your pastor about leading a jail visitation ministry from your church. This would provide a way for yourself and others in your church to visit not only your son, but also others who are there. Pointing out verses where Jesus talks about visiting those in prison, should be sufficient to get your pastor’s approval and support. There is also an organization called “Prison Fellowship Ministries”, which has a lot of resources and contacts that would be overjoyed to help you set something up. The website for them is: http://www.pfm.org Even though this is an extremely hard time for you and your family, it is also an opportunity for God to do amazing things in your family, your church, and your whole community. |

130 | What does the bible say about separation | 1 Cor 7:39 | Sir Pent | 59229
When I read this question, I couldn't help but wonder if there were other more important questions that you should be asking. It sounds like you are in a very difficult situation, but it also sounds like you knew that when you entered it. The question is why? Why would you say yes to a proposal that was only "about what you could give him"? Why would you be "wife #4" to a person who had led a "real bad life"? Why is a marriage falling apart, yet everything is presented as his fault alone. Why is there a 12 year old child who will be drastically impacted by the decisions you make, and yet virtually nothing is mentioned about them. It seems like there are root problems here that need to be resolved. I would like to understand where you are comming from better, but perhaps the best answer would be to spend some significant time talking to the pastor of your home church. If these root issues are not addressed and resolved, then moving on to date someone else (before or after the divorce) will likely just lead to more pain and sufferring. |

131 | what "spirits in prison"? | 1 Pet 3:19 | Sir Pent | 24418
Another View ................................. Dear swb, Tim and I have discussed this issue thoroughly, and I hope that you will do a search and read through that thread. Basically I believe that the spirits were of all the people who died before Jesus sacrifice on the cross. I believe that Jesus preached to them so that those who believed could be saved. |

132 | Is iT possible to live without sin? | Rom 6:2 | Sir Pent | 23574
Contrary View .............................. Dear Resurrectioner, I am not prepared at this time to do a full discussion on this topic, but I just wanted to let you know that I think that it IS possible to live a life without sin after salvation (not before). This doctrine is called "Entire Sanctification", and you can find some posts on the subject by doing a search for those words. |

133 | Please help me to find this out for this | Luke 1:27 | Sir Pent | 23565
Attempt at consensus .......................... Certain scriptures are unclear whether Jesus had brothers in His immediate family, and this has led to variance in beliefs within the Christian Church. Matthew 27:56 says that Mary (the mother of James and Joseph) was at the cross with Mary Magdalene. But John 19:25 says that Mary Magdalene was at the cross with Mary (the mother of Jesus) and also Mary (wife of Clopas, and sister of Mary the mother of Jesus). Therefore, Matthew 27:56 could have been referring to Jesus' mom or his aunt. Matthew 1:25 says that Mary remained a virgin until the birth of Jesus, but this doesn't neccessarily mean that she did or did not remain so afterwards. It could be interpreted either way. However, there are other passages which are less easily explained. Matthew 12:46 says that Jesus mother and brothers came to visit him. (Mark 3:31 and Luke 8:19 repeat the story) Mark 6:3 says that Jesus is the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon. (Matthew 13:55 repeats the story) Galations 1:19 specifically refers to Jesus brother James. John 2:12, John 7:3, Acts 1:19, and 1 Corinthians 9:5 all refer to Jesus brothers in general. Those who believe that Mary remained a virgin throughout life (mainly Catholics) would interpret these passages to be using the word "brother" to simply mean "male relative". This usage is common amoung many African tribes even today. However, most members of this forum (and most Protestants) would interpret these passages to have a literal meaning. Since the Bible is not completely clear on the matter, and this is not a salvific issue, both perspectives are entitled to their opinions, and either side would probably not be shocked to discover in Heaven that they were wrong. As for myself, I choose to take the Bible literally unless another scripture directly contradicts it. Therfore, since many verses refer to Jesus brothers, and there are no verses that literally say that Jesus did not have any brothers in His immediate family, I figure that He probably did. |

134 | why is baptism important | 2 Cor 5:17 | Sir Pent | 22338
Personal Note .................................. Dear Fele, Welcome to the forum. The basic answer is that Baptism is important because God tells us to do it in the Bible. If you have the opportunity, then you should be baptised. It is a way to publicly acknowledge that you are choosing to be a Christian and love God. For further information, please use the search box (top right of the screen) to find many other answers on this subject. P.S. To other forum members posting to this thread, This topic has been thoroughly covered in other threads, and as I have read all of the responses so far, there has been nothing new added in this one. I think it would be healthier to just recommend a search than to create division by rehashing old arguments. |

135 | How to know God just from seeing nature? | Rom 1:20 | Sir Pent | 22207
Finding God in Nature, part 2 ................. When I look at the world the first thing that I notice is that it exists. I know this is obvious, but it is important. I also know that it is illogical for something to exist without having a beginning. So how did everything get here? One must believe that either it was always here and had no beginning, or "Something" else was always here and made everything. Now since it is illogical for anything to exist without beginning, then the most logical answer would be that only one "Thing" broke this logic as opposed to all things breaking the logic. In other words, it makes more sense to believe that only one "Power" always existed than to believe that the star in the sky, and the bird in the air, and rock on the ground, etc. have always existed (in some form of either energy or matter). Similarly, the existence of nature leads one to believe that there is an Eternal Power, who created the universe, because it is the most logical explanation. |

136 | Marriage to a Catholic? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 21706
An Answer and a Question ........................ Dear JMR, In my opinion, the location of a wedding is not a moral issue. It is not wrong to get married in a Catholic church, or even in a courthouse for that matter. There are some related issues that could be a problem. Depending on the Catholic church, you might have to become a member of their church to get married there. Are you willing to do that? I fully believe that it is possible for a Catholic to be a Christian, but there are some specific teachings of the Catholic church which most protestants would not be willing to agree with. A final question is more personal. Just over a month and a half ago, you mentioned that the marriage would be about 3 years from then. Now it seems like you are already in the planning stages. Why the appearantly sudden shift in time tables? |

137 | Numbers 3,14 and 40 | Matthew | Sir Pent | 21694
There are two answers (at least) to your question. Dear Anjao, A minority of the members of our forum believe that there is more significance to the numbers in the Bible than just the literal meaning. One of these members has recently defined the meanings of two of the numbers you asked about. (Three -Resurrection,Divine Completeness and Perfection, Forty - Trials, Probation, and Testings). I have also heard other definitions for the meanings of these numbers. That brings us to the second answer to your question. How do we know for sure what the real meaning is? Since it is not explicitly told in the Bible, the majority of the members here at the forum believe that it is pure speculation to assign figurative meanings to these and all numbers in the Bible. They would say that if a verse says that Jesus was in the desert for 40 days, that it only means that He was in the desert for a period of 40 days. I hope this helps, and suspect that further answers will allign with one of these two views. I also hope that proponents of these two perspectives will not generate too large of an argument over the issue. |

138 | Witnessing: What is your style? | John 1:7 | Sir Pent | 21692
My Evangelism Experience ........................ I agree with my colleagues that this is a great question. As Christians we are called to follow the "Great Commision", but what does that look like? Nolan, has done well at describing several possibilities. I have done some "street witnessing" in college, which was mostly the direct approach. I have also used the social approach at times by inviting people to church activities. However, I relate most closely with options 2 and 3, which are connected for me. My own testimony is of an intellectual nature, as God chose to show me His truth through logic and reason. Therefore, when I am talking to non-Christians about faith, I usually try to lead them through the same approach that I took. I also often am presented with opportunities to share about what God has done in my life. When someone compliments me on something, I often realize that I did not always have that character trait. This makes a great chance to tell that person how I used to be and how that God has changed me for the better. I have found this approach to be effective. |
