Colin, BTW, I believe that Hank has successfully permanently steered me away from any desire to value an exegetical basis of interpretation for the scripture. I refuse to utilize such an exegetical basis for my church crew. Really, it's the Holy Spirit's divine discernment that counts, versus exegetical methods. I view any interpretive methods that try to bypass the divine work of the Holy Spirit as strictly heretical. Reaching people where they're at is what counts. New converts don't understand things like greek/hebrew exegetical requirements, because it's not a valid life priority. And if you don't agree with me, that's completely fine. No matter to me. LOLOL. - Blessings, Reighnskye |

106 | John Baptist's Jewish legal credentials? | OT general | Reighnskye | 134051
What were John the Baptist's legal Jewish credentials to baptize the Savior? We know that he was the son of the High Priest Zacharias. Shouldn't John have been ministering as High Priest, in the Holy Place of the temple, as opposed to baptizing the Savior in the wilderness? John the Baptist apparently trashed his fine religious robes to wear a poor man's garb of camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. Shouldn't Jesus have been baptized by John at the temple? |

109 | John Baptist's Jewish legal credentials? | OT general | Reighnskye | 134249
EdB, You quoted from the Holman Bible Dictionary as follows: "At some point close to the time of Jesus, Judaism began a heavy emphasis on ritual washings to cleanse from impurity. This goes back to priestly baths prior to offering sacrifices (Lev. 16:4,24). Probably shortly prior to the time of Jesus or contemporary with Him, Jews began baptizing Gentile converts, though circumcision still remained the primary entrance rite into Judaism." In this light, wouldn't circumcision be on an equivalent level as baptism? The early Jewish church seems to have thought so. How would circumcision and baptism really differ, if at all? Acts 15 1 Some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brethren, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." (NAS95) - Blessings, Reighnskye |

111 | John Baptist's Jewish legal credentials? | OT general | Reighnskye | 134657
Kalos, You stated: "In the Torah (Law) God very clearly and plainly COMMANDS circumcision. Leviticus 12:1,3 (ESV) The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, [2] "Speak to the people of Israel, saying, 'If a woman conceives and bears a male child...on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.'"" So are believers under the law of circumcision today, as in OT times? - Blessings, Reighnskye |

115 | God's Name in the New Testament | NT general Archive 1 | Reighnskye | 132677
If I'm not otherwise mistaken, the NT name of "Jesus" was actually a derivative of the OT name of "Joshua". "Joshua" likewise had originated from the name of "Yeshua", which had itself also come from the name of "YHWH". A rumor that I heard from a scholarly friend many years ago, if I even remember it correctly. Hence, the unknowable name of "YHWH" had evolved through many stages to become the personalized name of "Jesus", with the names "Yeshua" and "Joshua" as the midlinks of the name. Perhaps someone more scholarly than myself can correct me on this. - John 1 14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. (NAS95) - Reighnskye |

116 | God's Name in the New Testament | NT general Archive 1 | Reighnskye | 132704
Thanks, Tim. I thought that there was some interrelation there, but I'm not sure how far it went. Another similar name would be Elijah. When Jesus uttered the phrase "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?", the bystanders nearby thought that He was uttering the name of Elijah and calling for him. - Reighnskye |
