101 | Papal Authority Optional for RCC? | Bible general Archive 1 | Brian.g | 48364
Hank I'm not trying to play games with words or avoid your question. In today's world, the Church does recognize that the greater penalty which we would suffer is in our relationship with God. Church law - Each case is evaluated on its own merit and many factors are taken into consideration. There is no cut and dried answer. Brian |

Hank If I do not fully accept the pastoral leadership of the Pope and the teachings of the Catholic Church, then I would have chosen not to be a Catholic. If I have chosen not to be a Catholic, then the "penalty" I believe I would receive would be a less complete relationship with God. What would the Church do to me, for choosing not to be a Catholic - nothing worse than what I would have already done to myself. Brian |

104 | Papal Authority Optional for RCC? | Bible general Archive 1 | Brian.g | 48347
Hank As my answer to Joe explains: I have the free will to accept or reject the pastoral leadership of the Pope and the teachings of the Catholic Church. If I reject, then I would be making the conscious decision that I did not want to be a member of the Catholic faith community. But, I have, through my own free will, freely accepted the Catholic Church, it's teachings and its leadership. I believe that, with all of it's imperfections (as every church does have) that this is the church which will enable me to obtain the closest, most intimate relationship possible with God (which is what God and Jesus desires: John 17:20-26). Through its teachings, the Gospel, its traditions and the seven sacraments - which are pleasing to God. Brian |

Joe God gave each of us a free will to accept or reject whatever we wish. I have chosen to accept the pastoral leadership of the Pope and the teachings of the Catholic Church. You, may use your free will to accept or reject whatever you decide. Brian |

Steve A more complete definition of infallible includes: "not liable to mislead, deceive, or disappoint" (Merriam-Webster), which means we, the faithful, will accept without judgement. There are some teachings in which the use of your shortened definition list is appropriate, such as when the Pope does confirm that Jesus is God, the Churchs position on the Trinity and so on. I think we all agree with those infallible teachings of the Catholic Church. But, there are other proclamations, announcements, decisions - which, I will accept from the Pope and I will not judge him to be right or wrong. I will accept that the Pope has prayed on it, sought counsel and is being guided with truth and honesty. Now, you and I are not obligated to accept the leadership of the Pope, but I choose to. So, now that the full definition of the word is now known, you can see that both you and dschaertel are correct. Brian |

108 | Where is the TRUTH found? | Matt 1:25 | Brian.g | 48307
Joe By proclaiming the excellencies of God, we are proclaiming the truth of God. When people hear the truth of God and understand that God is truth, people will desire to be brought into a closer and more personal relationship with God. And, all people who know and understand the truth of God will desire to be one, not only with God, but with each other - for which Jesus prayed John 17:20-26 I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me. Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world also does not know you, but I know you, and they know that you sent me. I made known to them your name and I will make it known, that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in them. Jesus created the Church to continue His mission of helping man achieve a closer and more personal relationship wih God, through Jesus - and with each other, through and with God. Yes Joe, I agree with 1 Peter 2:9 - Proclaim the excellencies of Him... Brian |

Mommapbs The role of a church is to help guide man into a closer and more personal relationship with God, through Jesus. While, to a degree, each Christian church shares in the success of that objective, some churches help enable their members to enjoy a more complete and fuller relationship with God, than do others. I trust the teachings of the Catholic Church. Brian |

110 | Was Mary a virgin her whole life | Matt 1:25 | Brian.g | 48136
kalos Do you feel that God, the Father, is stained with sin. I'm sure we both agree the answer is no. Jesus is God and would not be stained with sin. In order to accomplish this, it was neccessary that original sin was cleansed from His mother. On that basis, the Catholic Church considers Mary to be the first person saved by Jesus. She was cleansed of all sin (including original sin), in order to prepare her body for her son. So that, her Son (God), was born free of all stains of sin. Mary received the same cleansing that is offered to each of us, at Baptism. Although she was saved before the birth of Christ, in accordance with God's plan. Brian |

joe I'm not trying to be argumentive or turn this into a debate, I would just like to understand your viewpoint. I have always agreed that Scripture is the inspired word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-17), but doesn't the Protestant viewpoint completely disregard the truth and wisdom of God, brought to us through the ongoing relationship between God and man through the Holy Spirit? Also, where does the Bible specifically say it is the ONLY source of teaching? 2 Timothy 3:16-17 does not say it is the only source of teaching. Last, for many, many years, there was no New Testament. All teaching was based upon traditions of the Apostles. Where in the Bible is it written that the traditional teachings of the Apostles were no longer valid and should not be used in conjunction with the written New Testament, once the written New Testament was compiled. Tincup I understand the point of your comment to a post of mine from 9 months ago. I will not debate the issue. I will however, share some thoughts that came to mind. John 13:13-15 You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am. If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. John 13:20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me." John 17:9 I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours John 17:18 As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world. Luke 9:1-2 He summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal (the sick). Luke 9:61-62 And another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home." (To him) Jesus said, "No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God John 13:15 I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do. The expectations, responsibilities and mission of a priest - a path consciously choosen - is to live his life, fully and completely, in the service of God. In the same manner as Jesus taught. These demands are greater than those put upon we who have not choosen that path of service to God. And, each man and woman, has the free will to choose to accept or reject sin, regardless of the path of service chosen - as Jesus also taught us by His rejection of sin. Brian |

114 | Catholic church and church of England | NT general Archive 1 | Brian.g | 44359
Fudges I am only prepared to speak on behalf of the Catholic Church. Catholics believe: The Christian home is the place where children receive the first proclamation of the faith. For this reason the family home is rightly called "the domestic church," a community of grace and prayer, a school of human virtues and of Christian charity. Next, the following are Jesus' words on the union of marriage Mark 10:11-12 Matthew 19:9 Luke 16:18 And Paul: 1 Corinthians 7:10-11 However, there are circumstances in which the Church will grant an annulment of (or nullify) the marriage. Serenetime I was surprised to say the least, that when I checked my email this morning, I found a response from this forum to a post I made 7 months ago. Thank you for your concern. However, although he does not need me, I would like to defend Nolan (Makarios). The post you referred to was published in August, 2001 and we are now 7 months later. From day one of this forum, and specifically in the time period since the post in question, Makarios has make significant contributions to this forum and has handled himself with the utmost of professionalism and as a solid example of Christian leadership. How Makarios responded to my post of 7 months ago, falls into the same category as to who Cain married - it just doesn't matter anymore. Brian |

116 | How should fathers treat their children? | Eph 6:4 | Brian.g | 38189
thestraws fathers should treat their children in the same way in which God, our Father, treats us, His children. genesis 3 and 4 show us two examples in which God is angry, disappointed and at the same time, a very loving, giving and encouraging Father. First, in Genesis 3 God is angry at Adam and Eve, and yet at the same time providing for them by making their clothes (Gen 3:21). In Genesis 4, God is dissappointed in Cain for the quality of his offering. And, at the same time, God is encouraging Cain that he, Cain, is capable of doing better, all he needs to do is to try (Gen 4:6-7). A father has a right to expect and even demand respect from his children. But, a father has a responsibility to love, nuture and protect his children. As God has taught us by example, so many times. 117 | Did God really want animal sacrifices? | Gen 4:4 | Brian.g | 37855
Robust A good starting point to answering your questions would be to read Psalms 50:5-23, and pay particular attention to verses 5, 8-13 and 23. Psalms 50:23 Those who offer praise as a sacrifice honor me; to the obedient I will show the salvation of God."). Brian |

Katie I think the suggestion offered by Emmaus was an excellent one and I can't expand on it. But, I did want to say, that you have my sincerest respect and admiration for being a single parent, raising two young men and working two jobs. I know this is not an easy challenge, but I also know that the only way it can be done is with complete and total love, devotion and dedication for all involved. You are a wonderful Christian role model. With the good things you are doing for your sons, I believe that Matthew 12:12 applies directly to you. Brian |

120 | Are we bringers of peace or division? | Luke 12:51 | Brian.g | 36043
Joe Man achieves his greatest and most complete peace, when he accepts the salvation offered by God. It is at that point that man is able to put all human challenges, problems and conflicts behind. And, then to be embraced in the peace of Gods family and Gods love. As far as the word of Jesus causing devision: I believe the answer from "CDBJ", better clarifies the difference between peace and division. Brian |
