101 | Let us offer Thanksgiving to God :) | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 23575
Personal Note ................................... Dear Nolan, I too will have to leave shortly, and will not be able to post again after that, until next week. I hope you have a terriffic Thanksgiving, my good friend. I also would like to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to all my other distinguished Forum colleagues. Take time to thank the Lord for all the blessings that He has generously given us. |

103 | Why does everything happen in thirds? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 24076
Personal Note .................................... This is actually less of a coincidence than it at first appears. All numbers whose digits add to a multiple of three are evenly divisible by three. (ie. 45's digits add to 9 and 45 is evenly divisible (3 X 15)). Because of this, all of the numbers you tried (111, 222, 333, 444, etc.) must also be divisible by three. This is simply because they are all three digit numbers where all digits are the same. Thus when the digits are added together they are all multiples of 3 (times whatever digit it is). |

Personal Note ................................... Dear Ray, I wish I could help you more, but I too am limited in my mathematical knowledge. I haven't taken a math class since way back in High School. However, I'll tell you what I know. As for the "father of math", I guess in one sense the answer would be God. He deffinately created a universe which contains many mathematical properties. As for the first human being that I am aware of that did much work with math, it would be Pythagoras (c.575 - c.500 BC) "Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher and mathematician, best known for working out the 'Pythagorean Theorem' stating that the square of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos, migrated to southern Italy, and established a school at Croton. Pythagoras taught that the order of the world was to be discovered with the aid of mathematics, physics, acoustics and astronomy. His famed saying was 'all is number' meaning that all existing things can be ultimately reduced to number relationships. His mystical teaching accepted the migration of souls." 105 | Feel so lonely and down over this burden | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 59330
Personal Note................. Dear Mae64,.................... I had a hard time understanding some of what you wrote in your response. From what I could tell, You said that your pastor didn’t visit and pray with your family when your mother died or when your son went to jail. This is sad, but I think that you are taking the right perspective by focusing on the truth that God is with you and that He cares for you more than anyone else even could. ...................... It also sounded like you and another lady visit the sick and elderly in your community. This is terriffic. Praise God that you do this! Perhaps you could also add the jail to your list of places to stop and visit with people. There is an elder lady in our church that visits the jail in our county, and she often shares during testimony time how blessed she has been by seeing God use her there to really bring some light into the people’s lives there. They have been very welcoming to her. ...................... I hope that I have understood your message correctly, and I will pray that you will continue to sense God’s love and guidance in a powerful way! |

106 | LEFT BEHIND? | Bible general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 60246
Suggestion to switch threads .................... Dear John and EdB, In your last post John you asked for scriptural support for EdB's belief that it is possible for a human to reject God's truth. I would suggest that Matthew 23:37 is a good example. God sent His truth through prophets, and desired for the people to be saved, but they rejected and killed them instead. ............................................................ I would also llke to suggest that since this branch of this thread is not really on the topic of the Left Behind books, and since there is a relatively empty thread on the verse Matthew 23:37, that you both continue this discussion there instead. Just an idea :) |

Personal Note ...................................... Dear Mae64, I also praise God with you for this happy reunion. This is the beginning of an answer to yours, mine, and probably many other people's prayers. Your son is blessed to have a mother who cares so much for him, and I hope that he comes to realize that God cares for him even more. I hope that he does decide to turn his life around. After all, the easiest place to turn around is at a dead end in the road, because there's no traffic comming the other way. |

108 | You shall not Murder, then told too?? | OT general | Sir Pent | 17660
Dear Joshua, I also struggled with this "appearant contradiction" for a long time. However, I discovered what I believe is a good explanation for why killing in the Old Testament (especially when directly commanded by God) was OK. At the same time I discovered that killing in the New Testament (after the resurrection) and in the present is NOT OK. This whole topic has been discussed at length on the forum though. I would suggest typing the words "absurd confusion" into the search box at the top right. It will take you to a post that I made on this subject in the middle of an extensive thread on the matter. That thread will hopefully answer your questions, but if you have more feel free to ask. |

109 | What do you make about love between men | OT general | Sir Pent | 59514
Clarification ....................................... Dear Searcher, I just wanted to suggest that a more accurate description of David and Johnathon’s love for each other would be “platonic” as opposed to “pure”. The reason for this is two-fold. First is that “platonic” actually means what you are talking about (a love which does not involve sex at all). ....................................... The second is that by using the word “pure” instead, it implies that any sexual relationship would be impure. I know that you don’t mean that, because obviously a sexual relationship between a man and wife who God has joined together, is deffinately a good thing. In fact, I would say that it is an important aspect of their pure love for each other. ....................................... The reason why I make this distinction is because in the early centuries after Christ death there arose a heretical view that all flesh is completely evil. This view was shown to be wrong, but still influences many people today in subtle ways. It also is one of the major tenets of Buddhism. Once again, I know from previous experience with you Searcher, that you don’t support these ideas, I just wanted to clarify for others reading this thread. |

Referral to another thread........................................... The position that Ischus is taking is different from what most of the people on this forum believe. The "accuracy of the Bible" issue has been discussed before, and I would recommend that anyone who would like to read more, to type the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right corner of the screen. |

Personal Note ................................... Dear Nolan, I completely agree with Hank. You have been sorely missed during your "forum vacation" by both the forum at large, as well as myself in particular. I hope that the time away has been refreshing for you, and that you have a renewed vigor for being perhaps the most consistent voice God uses to make a difference on this forum. Welcome back! Your friend always, Sir Pent |

112 | language Jesus speak | NT general Archive 1 | Sir Pent | 113256
Clarification.............................................. Hello EdB, You bring up a very good point. It is quite possible that Jesus did not primarily speak Hebrew. However, we know that the Old Testament books of prophecy and the Torah were written in Hebrew. And we know that Jesus had an extensive knowledge of them even as a small boy (teaching in the temple when he was 12 years old). And He was often quoting Old Testament scriptures throughout His ministry. Therefore, I think it is clear that He at least knew Hebrew and spoke it sometimes. I fully admit that it doesn't say specifically in the Bible. But these ideas seem to make sense based on the little information that we have. |

Defense of my answer............................................... Hello EdB, The King James Version of the Bible was written using words like "thee" and "thou" that have not been in common use for more than 100 years. However, although there are newer translations out there that are easier to read, some people still prefer the KJV. Similarly, I think we can assume that although there was a Greek translation available during Jesus time, that there were many people who prefered the old Hebrew texts. I think it is likely that the scriptures were still read in Hebrew at certain synagogues. And although the "common man" may have been more likely to be limited to understanding the Greek, the teachers of the law would definately be familiar with the older versions, just as many Bible scholars today study the original languages. Therefore, I think that it is a safe bet that Jesus would also have known the Hebrew language and be familiar with that version of the Old Testament writings. Finally, I would just like to say that it really doesn't matter very much what language Jesus spoke. We're all guessing, and the person who started this thread seems to have lost interest anyway. |

Personal Note........................................ Hello EdB, Don't worry about it. I'm not upset in the least :) I apologize for answering in a way that came across as more authoritative than I have any right to be on this subject. My thoughts in this thread are simply educated guesses, and should be taken as such. As for the accuracy and authority of scriptural translations (such as the Septuagint), I whole-heartedly agree with you. In fact, I would hope that anyone wanting more thoughts on this subject would type in the number 15780 into the "Quick Search" box at the top right of the screen. |

Personal note....................................................... Hello Anistet, I was impressed with your answer regarding the Sabboth that you posted today. It was very biblically based, and reasonable. I would also agree with you in your last post that you have the right to post your e-mail address as do others. However, I would agree with Colin's concern that you could use email to mislead someone towards the Jehovah's Witness group, which is considered to be a cult by almost all Christians (including those on this forum). I would suggest that along the lines of "truth in advertising", you give some information about yourself in your user profile, including the fact that you are a Jehovah's Witness. This would enable anyone to click on your name and see where you are coming from. Otherwise, it is likely that people like Colin will continue to attack your posts so that visitors to the forum will have this information. |

Personal note....................................................... Hello Colin, Hank, and BradK, Let's not go too far here. You are all correct that Aniset is identified with the Jehovah's Witness group, and I agree with you that they are a cult. However, the messages that Aniset has posted today do not contain any heresy to my knowledge. I have not seen anything in his posts that was trying to convince anyone to be a Jehovah's Witness. If Aniset tries to do that on the forum, then I could see your point more about banning. However, as long as he continues to post on subjects that he is in agreement with orthodox Christian belief, I do not see grounds for expulsion. In addition, there are many people who come to the forum and post ideas that are heretical and try to convince others that they are right. They may be agnostic and not know what they believe, or they may claim to be Christian and just be confused or immature. How can we kick off a specific forum member (Aniset) for heresy and proseletizing without kicking off them all? |

Personal Note......................................................... Hi Colin, As I look at the post 115810 that you directed me to, I do have some thoughts. Aniset stated many things, and they all appear to be true and in line with orthodox Christianity. However, he did not really answer the question being asked by Classy47. Instead, he said that he would be glad to help him through email and gave his address. His stated reason implied that there were too many verses and it would take too long to fully answer the question in the forum setting (which he could make a reasonable case for). Therefore, I see nothing in this specific post that would be cause for alarm. On the other hand, it does raise a "yellow flag" in that if Classy47 and Aniset corresponded further through email, then Aniset could lead Classy47 in the wrong direction without anyone on the forum being able to refute those ideas. However, isn't that the case with anyone? Colin, you seem to hold orthodox Christian beliefs to me from our limited contact so far, but couldn't you also lead someone astray via email after meeting them on the forum, and I'd never know? Can the forum be responsible for all of its member's personal emails? I guess those would be my first thoughts on that particular post. What are your thoughts? |

Personal Note......................................................... Hi BradK, Thanks for your kind response. I'm glad that you liked my idea of having Aniset update his user profile. Thankfully he has agreed to do that, although it hasn't been done yet (the last time I checked). I agree that "to seek to induce someone to communicate directly with a known cult member" is a bad idea. Therefore, I will not be advising anyone to try to get answers to Biblical questions by e-mailing Aniset. At the same time, this forum does not require that people who participate BELIEVE in an orthodox version of Christianity. It does require that people cannot POST statements that oppose the authority of the Bible, Christianity, or the deity of Christ. Therefore, it seems that Aniset cannot be banned for not BELIEVING in the deity of Christ. However, he could be banned if he actually POSTS something that denies the deity of Christ. |

Personal Note......................................................... Hi Hank, Why is it that we seem to be butting heads so often lately? The post that you are responding to was addressed to three forum members. Two of them started their response to me with "Thanks...", but your response seemed to be angry with me. As for your comments, I fully admit that I have not read many of Aniset's posts. As you know I was away from the forum for a while, including the majority of the time that Aniset has been around. I see that he has 95 posts, and would prefer to not read them all as you requested. Perhaps you could point me to a specific few that you felt were the worst offenses. You asked whether I was trying to defend the Jehovah's Witness cult or Orthodox Christianity. I am always trying to defend an orthodox view of Christianity. I do believe that the Jehovah's Witness group is a cult and is therefore to be avoided. I am even glad that you, Kalos, and EdB are working to "expose and condemn cultism and other unbilical teachings". At the end, you said you "don't feel the need for me to tell you how to conduct yourself on this Forum". But as members of this forum, don't everyone have a right to defend a consistent application of forum guidelines? Specifically, members are banned from posting comments that deny the authority of the Bible, Christianity, or the deity of Christ. However they are not banned from believing those things. Therefore, to be consistent, it seems that Aniset would actually have to post something breaking those rules in order to be banned. |

My answer.................................................. Hi Colin, Thanks for your response and hypothetical :) situation. Your first question was how would I feel if a muslim man tried to get my daughter to study scripture with him by talking to her outside my church. My answer is that I would feel disturbed. Your second question was "what would you do"? I would talk to my daughter about the specific encounter and tell her that the man did not believe in the same God that we Christians do. I would say that it would therefore not be a good idea for her to study with him. The parallel to the current forum situation is clear. I think you are right to be disturbed that Aniset tried to convince Classy47 to study with him over email. I just think that the appropriate response is to tell Classy47 that Aniset is a member of a cult and to beware of his teaching. That should be sufficient based on current forum guidelines. Do you agree? |
