103 | Having yet not knowing one has | Romans | Aspiring Overseer | 90104
George, Originally you asked, "Can one have recieved the Holy spirit and not know?". In your last response you said, "Once again, I will reveal my ignorance by stating that although currently I have no biblical foundation for the following statement, I believe there is one. I (think) they, the Holy Spirit and The Holy Ghost are two completely different things.". Which question do you wish to discuss? If the first, consider if it is possible for a person to be "in Christ" and not know it. In other words, to be a Christian and not know it. The passage from Romans discusses a Christian's position as walking according to the Spirit, or in other words, God's will. If a person does not know how to become a Christian, then how will they know God's will? Does this make sense? AO |

John, Rom 9:14-16 14What shall we say then? There is no injustice with God, is there? May it never be! 15For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." 16So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy. NAS Some people say this passage speaks of man's inability to change the master plan of God, and that His plan is for man to chose Him. Mankind can not change the plan, but they can change their role in it. Does that make salvation centered on man or God? AO |

105 | Does Heb 6 support "always saved"? | Bible general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 90023
Justme, I agree, many people do go to great lengths to prove their assertions. God is not a God of confusion, is he? Why must scripture be interpreted through the prism of what we want it to be rather than just reading it for what it says? Heb 6:4-6 4For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame. NAS Can you clarify this? AO |

109 | Baptism of the Holy Ghost still exists ! | 1 Cor 13:10 | Aspiring Overseer | 88646
Tim, 1 Cor 13:8-9 8Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. NAS Try inserting "miraculous" before knowledge and this should give you an opprtunity to view this in a totally different light. Remember the purpose of the gifts were to confirm the word. Once the perfect came (the written NT) there was no longer a need for the supernatural passing of knowledge. AO |

110 | Can true Christians lose their faith? | Bible general Archive 1 | Aspiring Overseer | 88643
Yampa, Would you agree that only those people who love God will go to heaven? For many folks the concept of loving God is lumped into the same situation as loving your family, friend or spouse, yet they are different. Loving God does not mean you have a closeness to Him like your spouse. God is our creator, and as such, He is revered with fear; reverence for His position and the obligations He places on His people; fear of the consequences of not pleasing Him. Thus, as John 14:15 states, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments" and Hebrews 5:9, "And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation". Obedience to God's commands is necessary to have salvation. Yet your question as to how a Christian loses their salvation is excellent and is plain to understand. If all sin is a separation from God and all people sin (even Christians) how can anyone be saved? Repentence; God gave Christians the ability to acknowledge their sin and turn away from it and back to God. But here comes the key...their actions must speak louder than their words! Just like you wouldn't believe my apology for hitting you in the face for the second or third time, unless I actually did something to demonstrate my sincerity. Talk is cheap and everyone knows that, especially God! James 1:21-22 22But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. NAS Does this trivialize the blood of Christ? Of course not! Without the sheding of Christ's blood their would be no forgiveness of sin. It is the notion that a Christian has no obligation to work that is an afront to God. Christianity is not a complex or confusing religion. It is Satan that has made it that way in the minds of man. The only faith needed is that God exists and that people exist to serve Him. Once you understand what God requires, the balance is simple. AO |

112 | Freeze-dried Salvation? | John 15:6 | Aspiring Overseer | 88573
Barb, Your commentary brings to mind one of several cautions in scripture: Prov 14:12 12There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death. NAS Ephesians 2:8-10tells us this: The gentiles, who previously had no hope, were offered salvation through faith in Christ. This was the master plan of God and could not have been brought about through anything they had done. Christians are God's workmanship, created for good works, which God commands they perform. Assuming John 15 is talking about the spiritual growth of Christians, as you suggest, would God not be unfair to cast off and burn the slow learners? Those people were "in Christ" (Gal3:27), they were part of the vine or body of believers, but....they did not bear fruit (i.e. they did not work, put forth effort, preach the word, produce fruit that SHOULD REMAIN (John 15:16), not just good deeds. Scripture tells us that obedience is mandatory; that we are to prove God's will; to work out our salvation; bear fruit for God; understand God's commandments; be of one mind...the list is long. Are you willing to put forth the effort? AO |

113 | Exodus and a God to fear | Exodus | Aspiring Overseer | 75109
God has not changed since He created the universe. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom or the application of knowledge. Christians are called today to obey all of God's commands. We are to work out our salvation with fear and trembling; that is to realize that unless we obey the commands of our Lord that we can not expect to be covered by the blood of Christ. Contrary to the doctrine of men, we must put forth the effort God requires of His priests if we are to expect our reward. God is just and God is kind by providing all those who seek him the opportunity for eternal life in heaven. AO |

116 | Are tongues a world language or not? | 1 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 71010
I whole hearted agree that God is not the author of confusion and that is why I urge you to re-examine Acts chapters 1 and 2. The 120 could not have received the gift of tongues, as you claim, otherwise it would have been sheer confusion! The "all" refers to "all of the apostles. Verses Acts 1:26 through Acts 2:15 and Acts 2:43 apply. The last verse of Acts chapter 1 is speaking of the Apostles. Acts 2:1 continues to speak of the Apostles when it says "they were all together in one place". In verse Acts 2:3 the "tongues as of fire..rested on each one of them", again referring to the Apostles. Acts 2:7 also mentions that those who heard them speak in tongues "were amazed and marveled, saying, "Why are not all these who are speaking Galileans?". Not all of the disciples were Galilean and only the Apostles received the Holy Spirit in this way, thus Acts 2:7. Is this helpful? AO |

If you read Acts chapters 1 and 2 carefully, the accounting of the 120 disciples and the Apostle's receiving the gift of tongues are separate instances. The tongues heard by those visiting Jerusalem were those of the 12. The 120 may have received the tongues after they were baptized, but not at the same time as the Apostles. AO |

119 | what is speaking in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 70821
Steve, For clarification,we are talking about healings ordained by God. The question is: Does the NT give any examples of these as not being successful? If it does not mention any, then why? What does a healer and a healee (forgive my terminology) need for efective healing to occur? AO |
||||||
120 | what is speaking in tongues? | 1 Corinthians | Aspiring Overseer | 70776
Steve, Requests for healing being denied would be quite significant, would they not? All sin is equal in God's eyes, so there is no logical reason for scripture to address a person's occupation with regard to their salvation. There would be a need to demonstrate the withholding of healing, however, if it was conditional upon who asked or how they asked. If the silence argument were to be valid, it would need to be in alignment with the nature of God. The fulfillment of the Old Covenant was an event that required miracles to confirm the validity of the change. Withholding those miracles would have been inconsistent with His purpose and contrary to His Word. Additionally, and back to our original discussion, the silence position does not explain why miraculous healing can not be conducted with 100 percent success today. Are sick children in our hospitals in the same basket as an "imagined Pharisee" demanding healing as a sign? Let's reason together and look at scripture logically. From that framework, continued miraculous gifts do not exist today and can only be weakly supported by adding to scripture. Their purpose was fulfilled with the arrival of the written word. P. S. I am short on time, but will put some more thought to the validity question you pose at a later date. AO |
