103 | Who are the "sons of God?" | OT general | meusing | 44626
The 'sons of God' in Genesis 6 refers to the decendents of Seth who were called by and on the Name of the LORD Gen. 4:26. As for the mention of 'sons of god'in Job, he also mentions them in Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy? I think that relates to what John saw in Rev 5:11 Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels on every side of the throne and of the living creatures and the elders [of the heavenly Sanhedrin], and they numbered ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands, [Dan. 7:10.] |

When Jacob returned to the land of Canaan from Paddan-aram he wrestled with the Angel of God who changed his name to Israel Gen. 32:28. Later, at Bethel ... Gen 35:9 And God [in a distinctly visible manifestation] appeared to Jacob again when he came out of Padan-aram, and declared a blessing on him. [Gen. 32:28.] Gen 35:10 Again God said to him, Your name is Jacob [supplanter]; you shall not be called Jacob any longer, but Israel shall be your name. So He called him Israel [contender with God]. Gen 35:11 And God said to him, I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you and kings shall be born of your stock; Gen 35:12 The land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and to your descendants after you I will give the land. Which is a confermation of the covenant that God gave Abraham in Chapter 17, and to his father Isaac in chapter 26:24. |

106 | God forgive no matter what | 2 Cor 5:8 | meusing | 44363
The purpose of Jesus is to save us from sin. 1. from the penalty of sin. 2. from the power of sin. 3. and finally from the presence of sin. The Holy Sprit witnesses to us and brings us to repentance which is turning from sin to God, not just sorrow for sin. Paul asked this question in Romans 6 and 7. Rom 6:1 WHAT SHALL we say [to all this]? Are we to remain in sin in order that God's grace (favor and mercy) may multiply and overflow? Rom 6:2 Certainly not! How can we who died to sin live in it any longer? Rom 6:3 Are you ignorant of the fact that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Rom 6:4 We were buried therefore with Him by the baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious [power] of the Father, so we too might [habitually] live and behave in newness of life. Rom 6:5 For if we have become one with Him by sharing a death like His, we shall also be [one with Him in sharing] His resurrection [by a new life lived for God]. Rom 6:15 What then [are we to conclude]? Shall we sin because we live not under Law but under God's favor and mercy? Certainly not! Rom 6:16 Do you not know that if you continually surrender yourselves to anyone to do his will, you are the slaves of him whom you obey, whether that be to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness (right doing and right standing with God)? Rom 6:17 But thank God, though you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient with all your heart to the standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed. Rom 6:18 And having been set free from sin, you have become the servants of righteousness (of conformity to the divine will in thought, purpose, and action). The Holy Spirit dwells within the Christian as a principle within who watches for sin and testifies to us of what that sin cost Jesus. This is the loving fear of God ... wanting to please Him and being afraid to displease Him, not because of punishment but because of love. |

He bore our sins on the cross. of course, as Paul said : 1 Cor 1:18 For the story and message of the cross is sheer absurdity and folly to those who are perishing and on their way to perdition, but to us who are being saved it is the [manifestation of] the power of God. |

111 | Where did Cain's wife come from? | Genesis | meusing | 44200
John Gill said ... Who this woman was is not certain, nor whether it was his first wife or not; whether his sister, or one that descended from Adam by another of his sons, since this was about the one hundred and thirtieth year of the creation. At first indeed Cain could marry no other than his sister; but whether he married Abel's twin sister, or his own twin sister, is disputed; the Jews say , that Cain's twin sister was not a beautiful woman, and therefore he said, I will kill my brother and take his wife: on the other hand, the Arabic writers say , that Adam would have had Cain married Abel's twin sister, whom they call Awin; and Abel have married Cain's twin sister, whom they call Azron; but Cain would not, because his own sister was the handsomest; and this they take to be the occasion of the quarrel, which issued in the murder of Abel. Calvin said ... And Cain knew his wife . From the context we may gather that Cain, before he slew his brother, had married a wife; otherwise Moses would now have related something respecting his marriage; because it would be a fact worthy to be recorded, that any one of his sisters could be found, who would not shrink with horror from committing herself into the hand of one whom she knew to be defiled with a brother's blood; and while a free choice was still given her, should rather choose spontaneously to follow an exile and a fugitive, than to remain in her father's family. Moreover, he relates it as a prodigy that Cain, having shaken off the terror he had mentioned, should have thought of having children: F248 for it is remarkable, that he who imagined himself to have as many enemies as there were men in the world, did not rather hide himself in some remote solitude. It is also contrary to nature, that he being astounded with fear; and feeling that God was opposed to him, could enjoy any pleasure. Indeed, it seems to me doubtful, whether he had previously had any children; for there would be nothing absurd in saying, that reference is here made especially to those who were born after the crime was committed, as to a detestable seed who would fully participate in the sanguinary disposition, and the savage manners of their father. This, however, is without controversy, that many persons, as well males as females, are omitted in this narrative; it being the design of Moses only to follow one line of his progeny, until he should come to Lamech. The house of Cain, therefore, was more populous than Moses states; but because of the memorable history of Lamech, which he is about to subjoin, he only adverts to one line of descendents, and passes over the rest in silence. |

113 | Heaven or Jerusalem | John 3:16 | meusing | 44183
yes. Rev 21:1 THEN I saw a new sky (heaven) and a new earth, for the former sky and the former earth had passed away (vanished), and there no longer existed any sea. [Isa. 65:17; 66:22.] Rev 21:2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, all arrayed like a bride beautified and adorned for her husband; Rev 21:3 Then I heard a mighty voice from the throne and I perceived its distinct words, saying, See! The abode of God is with men, and He will live (encamp, tent) among them; and they shall be His people, and God shall personally be with them and be their God. [Ezek. 37:27.] Rev 21:4 God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more, neither shall there be anguish (sorrow and mourning) nor grief nor pain any more, for the old conditions and the former order of things have passed away. [Isa. 25:8; 35:10.] Rev 21:5 And He Who is seated on the throne said, See! I make all things new. Also He said, Record this, for these sayings are faithful (accurate, incorruptible, and trustworthy) and true (genuine). [Isa. 43:19.] |

114 | Holy spirits power | John 5:20 | meusing | 44181
If you know the verse, then you know that He said 'He' refering to His Father. However I think you refer to John 14:12. Joh 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. John Calvin explained : And shall do greater works than these. Many are perplexed by the statement of Christ, that the Apostles would do greater works than he had done. I pass by the other answers which have been usually given to it, and satisfy myself with this single answer. First, we must understand what Christ means; namely, that the power by which he proves himself to be the Son of God, is so far from being confined to his bodily presence, that it must be clearly demonstrated by many and striking proofs, when he is absent. Now the ascension of Christ was soon afterwards followed by a wonderful conversion of the world, in which the Divinity of Christ was more powerfully displayed than while he dwelt among men. Thus, we see that the proof of his Divinity was not confined to the person of Christ, but was diffused through the whole body of the Church. Because I go to the Father. This is the reason why the disciples would do greater things than Christ himself. It is because, when he has entered into the possession of his kingdom, he will more fully demonstrate his power from heaven. Hence it is evident that his glory is in no degree diminished, because, after his departure, the Apostles, who were only his instruments, performed more excellent works. What is more, in this manner it became evident that he sitteth at the right hand of the Father, that every knee may bow before him, (Philippians 2:10.) |

117 | why restate all the sacrafices | Num 28:2 | meusing | 44163
'In these words the reader is furnished whith a key to unlock the whole of this portion of the book of Numbers. It is as distinct and simple as possible. "MY offering," "MT bread" "MY sacrifices" "A SWEET SAVOR UNTO ME." All this is strongly marked. We may learn here, without an effort, that the grand leading thought is, Christ to Godward. it is npt sp much Christ as meeting our need -- though surely He does most blessedly meet that -- as Christ feeding and delighting the heart of God. It is god's bread -- a truely wonderful expression, and one little thought of or understood. We are all sadly prone to look at Christ merely as the procuring cause of our salvation, the One through whome we are forgiven and saved from hell, the channel through which all blessing flows to us. He is all this, blessed forever be His name. he is the Author of eternal salvation to all them that obey Him; He bore our sins in His own body on the tree; he died, the just for the unjust, to bring us to God; He saves us from our sins, from the their present power, and from theor future consequences. All this is true; and consequently, throughout the whole of the two chapters which lie open before us, and in each distinct paragraph, we have the sin-offering introduced (see chap 28:15,22,30; 29:5,11,16,19,22,25,28,32,34,38). thirteen times over is mention made of the sin-offering of attonement, and yet for all that it remains true and obvious that sin or atonement for sin is not by any means the great prominent subject. ... there are 71 verses in the entire section-, and out of these, thirteen allude to the sin-offering, and the remaining fifty-eight are occupied with sweet-savor offerings. In a word, then, the special theme here is, God's delight in Christ. Morning and evening, day by day, week after week, fromone new moon to another, from the opening to the close of the year, it is Christ in His fragrence and preciousness to Godward." CHM |

118 | are we going to heaven | John 3:16 | meusing | 44147
I we believe in Jesus. John 3:16 For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. John 3:17 For God did not send the Son into the world in order to judge (to reject, to condemn, to pass sentence on) the world, but that the world might find salvation and be made safe and sound through Him. John 3:18 He who believes in Him [who clings to, trusts in, relies on Him] is not judged [he who trusts in Him never comes up for judgment; for him there is no rejection, no condemnation--he incurs no damnation]; but he who does not believe (cleave to, rely on, trust in Him) is judged already [he has already been convicted and has already received his sentence] because he has not believed in and trusted in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [He is condemned for refusing to let his trust rest in Christ's name.] |

120 | Significance of the right hand in bible? | Isaiah | meusing | 44027
Notice, in Isaiah 41:10 it is 'the right hand of my righteousness' in other words -- Jesus. I like John Gill's commentary .."either by his almighty power, or by his Son, the man of his right hand, made strong for himself, and the author of righteousness to his people: this is expressive of his sustentation of them, not merely in a providential way, but in a way of special grace; and of his powerful protection and preservation of them, so as that they shall stand in the grace of God, go on in his ways, and not fall finally and totally, but persevere to the end, though their trials and temptations may be great and many.' Ver. 13. For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand,.... Take hold of it, join in league and alliance with his people as it were, go hand in hand with them; and having such an one with them, and on their side, they need fear no enemy: or it is expressive of great freedom, familiarity, and friendship, which may assure believers of the strong affection of God towards them; and they may conclude themselves safe, being held by him as a child in the hand of its parents, which is then not afraid of anything. The Lord holds the right hand of his people, teaching them to walk by faith, leading them into his presence, and to communion with himself, and keeps them from falling: or, he "will strengthen their right hand" ; to do his work and service, and oppose their enemies; or he will relieve their wants, and fill their hands with his good things, which is sometimes the sense of the phrase |
