102 | Relationship of God's word to prayer | Matt 6:5 | jlhetrick | 206002
Melquisedec- what does your user name mean?? Welcome to the forum. May I request that you update your User Info. so that we might know something about you (not required). If I may quote DocTrinsograce (a participant here) in his post# 170353 he stated the following. "We are to live by every word of God. Men were meant to be directed always and continually by God. We know this because that is how God dealt with Adam before the fall. Even man in his sinless, perfect state needed to be told who he was, why he existed, what and how he was to do the tasks God gave to him." (See Luke 4:4 as a reference.) The Scripture establishes that our lives are to be lived in accordance with God's word. Knowing that, our prayers should be in accordance with God's word. A study of what prayer is (should be) is necessary and so I encourage you to embark on this. Prayer, be it a petition on the behalf of others, ourselves, a situation, should be approached in accordance with God's will which we can only begin to discern through Scripture. Our attitude should be in reverence, praise and worship with all thanks. We might think of Peter praying for Christ's deliverance from the Cross. (Matthew 16:21-23). His intentions were honorable, but completely out of the plan and will of God. The following verses (24-26) continues to give insight (from our Lord Himself) into this. I tend to believe that most people petition the Lord for their own needs first and some only seek Him at all when they are in dire straits. At those times, it's easy to see how the focus might be on self. I'm not sure that even immediately after being rebuked face-to-face by the Lord Himself that Peter, in the above example, understood his own error. It was likely sometime after the ressurection that Peter understood it sufficiently. Hope this gets the topic started. Others much more prepaired will chime in soon. God bless, Jeff |

104 | who torments in the lake of fireer | Revelation | jlhetrick | 205606
I don't know the answer but I will try to work through it with you while we wait on others better prepared. What the "Lake of Fire" even is has been debated but I'm going to make an assumption your speaking of the eternal state of the unsaved. If I'm wrong on that please correct me. I'm not sure if it's a question of "who" or a question of "what" does the tormenting. Popular belief is that Satan will be doing the tormenting but I haven't found that in Scripture. Instead, the "lake of fire" is a place that was "prepared for Satan and his angels” (Matt 25:41) and that Satan will be thrown there and tormented himself forever (Rev. 20:10), NOT doing the tormenting. 2 Peter 2:8 is what leads me to question whether these will be tormented by a “who” or a “what”. 2 Pet 2:8 (NASB)"(for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds)" The immediate context of that verse shines a good bit of light on the subject I believe. The Lake of Fire referred to in Matt 25:41 is a place, prepared by God for judgment. The "torment" will be the result of the unjustified guilt of the lost person's sin as I understand it. You may have heard, as I have, some argue that God is unloving and unjust because He would torment or allow some to be tormented. This argument is as unscriptural as it sounds. By His very character God is loving and just and there is nothing of God's character that contradicts another part of His character. The judgment of the unsaved will be on their own heads. Hope this is a helpful start, Jeff |

105 | Profile on the 12 Apostles | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 205603
Hello salmartinezjr- Welcome to the forum. You can pull up all sorts of stuff by typing in "12 Apostles" in your search engine (but some of it might be worthless at best. The best thing, of course, would be to pull it from the New Testament. Some of us use electronic bible libraries which are relatively inexpensive (and there is even a free one that is excellent ) if you want to check out my user profile (click on my username next to this post) for more info on that. The great thing about the digital libraries is that you can pull information out (literally in seconds) that might take many hours to find using actual books (if you even have access to that many books in hard-copy). More time studying and less time searching. Hope this helps, Jeff |

106 | No Fruit? | John 15:8 | jlhetrick | 205390
Steve- generally speaking this might be the case. Deeper consideration of why there is little or no fruit would require evaluating our own obedience and participation. By "move on" do you mean physically leave on place and arrive at another or are you referring to moving out of one activity (such as a particular ministry) and beginning something new? Of course, there might be the case where both are true. When things appear to be idle it may be time to move on. Then again, it may be time to exercise patient's while we wait for God's direction. Sometimes I believe the fruit might not even be obvious or even discernable to us. Just my thoughts on your thoughts. Jeff |

chesshores- your offering a lot of explanation for others in your "first" post here but I fear I miss the point. I'll have to start with giving you the benefit of doubt and hope that your not actually one or both of the previous "former users". I'm not acusing you, but can't imagine why you would go through so much to "qualify" yourself; you know, expaining having the same ISP and ISP address as two users who's accounts were "terminated". I am further troubled by your self-proclaimed level of higher maturity and knowledge. As a member here I have some concerns and questions about your post but don't intend to ask or go further than I have. This is a bible study forum. Did you have a bible study question or input? God bless, Jeff |

110 | If a person hurts you and ask forgivenes | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 205147
Katielee- welcome to the forum! The Bible clearly teaches that salvation is through faith in Christ alone, so, you can discount anyone's saying that not having a relationship with anyone other than Christ Himself will result in your going to Hell. As a general and very practicle rule, which I will abide by here, we do not address specific relationship issues/conflicts here on the forum. It's not the purpose of the forum, nor could we hope to fully understand all parties involved in a way that would make even gereral advise safe to give. With that said, perhaps meditating on this scripture will be helpful. Matthew 18:21-35. We, each of us, do well to continually remember our own position before God, Eph. 2:5. God Bless, Jeff |

111 | Does God want us to belong to one church | Bible general Archive 4 | jlhetrick | 205069
Sissy- some good responses from others already; allow me to add a little. You didn't mention if your husband is saved, so there is assumption here that can be corrected as needed. If your husband is saved then 1Cor 11:13 would apply. I'm not interpreting this to imply that the saved husband should be jerking his family from church to church but that doesn't seem to be your situation. I'm understanding that your husband currently has you steady in a Bible teaching church, just a different one from the one you were attending. I see no problem. Tamara does a good job of pointing to some practical reasons for commitment to a single local church body, most importantly, in my opinion, the accountability issue. Still, there are lots of reasons people change churches (such as job relocation, etc.) Changing to one that your saved husband leads you to (assuming he's saved and the church is teaching sound doctrine) is as good a reason as any in my opinion, and again, keeping with 1Cor. 11:13. The husband is called as the spiritual leader under Christ's leadership. Some are offended by this while others, husbands, abuse it with attempts to impose a control over their wives and families that is not justified. Since you have been in church consistently, you may be the one to lead your husband to Christ, (this assuming he is not saved) or to encourage him in the Word as he seeks the Lord's truth. See 1Cor 7:14-17 for some reference and then read the entire books of 1 and 2 Corinthians for greater understanding. Hope this helps; welcome to the forum! Jeff |

114 | Why can't I speak in tongues yet ? | Acts | jlhetrick | 204312
joann- might I suggest that you read Phil. 1:6 and hole tightly to that. Dedicating or rededicating our lives to God effects our salvation no more than speaking or not speaking in tongues. To what degree we "dedicate" our lives to God we are "working". We should work in our faith but never be fooled into thinking that this does anything to save us. Don't be concerned about speaking in tongues, if I may suggest, but be convinced of Phil. 1:6. God bless and rejoice in Him. Jeff |

115 | I agree Hank, but how do you reconcile? | Eph 2:8 | jlhetrick | 203761
Tamara- welcome to the forum: A tip for forum use first if I may. Once your into a topic and responding to another make sure to click on "note" when responding. If you click on "question" when responding during an ongoing discussion (even if your going to be asking a question) your post shows up on the home page as if it's the beginning of a new topic. Hope that makes sense. To begin responding to your topic here I would like to point out what I view as a problem with the approach to your considering the topic or at least in how you requested the rest of us to consider it. Your original question asked responders to base our response on a handful of verses. In this post I'm responding to you use the word "reconcile". The answer to that is "context". We don't reconcile any point of doctrine by pointing to and keeping within a few verses whether they be together or scattered throughout. The reconciliation only happens as Scripture as a whole establishes the meaning of the verses at hand. As Hank pointed out; Salvation is wholly of God from start to finish. And while he did list a few verses for reference, a study of the Scriptures as a whole does fully establish this. Not to play on words, but we don't "get saved", we "are saved" by and only by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Finally, even that saving faith is not something we choose, accomplish, work for, etc. That very faith that saves us is totally from God. See Eph. 2:8. God bless, Jeff |

116 | KJV question | Gen 34:19 | jlhetrick | 203571
Thomas- I'm not one who holds to the KJV only but felt I should respond to your post quickly in order to avoid a devisive debate that is most likely to ensue. While there is endless writings debating which version is "best" I'm thinking the forum wouldn't be a good place to continue the ages old debates. Besides that, not many here are well versed in the original laguages and point and click software really wouldn't be sufficient to manage it. Just my opinion and belief and am requesting as a fellow forum member that we don't go there. Respectfully, Jeff |

117 | In search of the truth | Ps 115:3 | jlhetrick | 203258
fytrobert- based on your question concerning the single quoted verse and your user profile I believe the following might be helpful. Certainly the Scriptures can be understood rationally, but not always can we understand a single verse in a way that seems rational or that makes sense to us. Contextual reading/study is the key. Never take a verse by itself and try to make sense of it without considering how it fits with what is written immediately before and after. If your still unable to understand it you need to continue to consider context in terms of what the rest of Scripture says. In this case simply understanding that God is sovereign (as Doc pointed out) is enough to answer your question. The Scriptures declare that God is sovereign: Ps 103:19 (NASB) The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all. And reading through both the OT and NT will clearly demonstrate what Ps 103:19 means. And nothing is written in Scripture that says or suggests that we are living as "pre-programmed" creatures with no personal will or responsibility; so we can rule that out easy enough. Go back and begin reading Psalm 139 again beginning at verse 1. What is David's message in that Psalm? You will see David's reverence for God as he acknowledges that God is omniscient (all-knowing) and how David is in awe of God's providence. You should also see that there is no indication from David that he views himself as being pre-programmed, without a will, and without personal responsibility. Hope this helps, Jeff |

shernetta- Welcome to the Forum. If your prefer physical books I recommend a good concordance. I like Stong's Exhaustive Concordance personally but there are others and they are mostly, fairly inexpensive. If you have regular access to a computer that is connected to the internet there are several reputable websites that have search features. You can even download some very good digital bible study libraries to include trial versions and at least one full-featured library that has an excellent user interface and a large selection of resources and it's all free and can be installed on your personal computer for free. So that I'm not cluttering space with web address and don't appear to be endorsing anything publically I will not list it here. I can give you specific info on resources if you care to email me (my address is in my user profile- click on my user name in this response). Also, some of the information is included in my user profile at the bottom. Jeff |
