103 | Dose the bible note angels by gender? | Bible general Archive 4 | biblicalman | 228871
Hi Etta, Welcome to the forum. The Bible actually says nothing about gender in angels, but always speaks of them as 'he'. What we do know is that they neither marry nor are given in marriage (Matt 22.30). But as they are spirit beings that is not surprising. It does, however, suggest that they do not spcifically split up into couples (except when acting as witnesses). However, we would be unwise to dogmatise over what they can do when they come in the form of men. Clearly good angels would be true to their status. But some believe that the 'angels who kept not their first estate' (Jude 6) were fallen angels who consorted with women in the time of Noah. That is not impossible, for in the Old Testament 'sons of the elohim (God)' always refers to angels. They may even have been cases of demonic intercourse. This woud explain why God had to destroy all of mankind because their women had become tainted. Best wishes |

106 | you reap what you sew, meaning | Gal 6:7 | biblicalman | 228866
hi welcome to the forum. The idea is taken from Gal 6.7 ff. It concerns our attitude of heart and our resulting response and the consequence of them in our eternal destiny. Those who sow to the flesh, that is those who live for the things of this world, and who consequently do not truly respond to Christ, will as a consequence reap corruption and destruction. Those who sow to the Spirit, that is those who truly respond to Christ and receive the Holy Spirit so that He might direct their lives, and who consquently come to know Christ better and do good (verse 9) will reap eternal life. Best wishes |

109 | were old testiments years same as today | Bible general Archive 4 | biblicalman | 228842
hi welcome to the forum the ancients tended to see time in periods of the moon from new moon to new moon (28-29 days). 12 moon periods made up a year. but every three years or so they would add in an intercalary moon period so as to keep the seasons in sync. often when making calculations they would see a moon period as being 30 days. But this was only a covenience. Thus forty two moon periods would be seen as 1260 days even though in fact being somewhat less. There is, however, slight evidence of a 365 day year in Palestine. But it was not common. Most people stuck to the method I have outlined above, and that was the basis on which life went on. (Most people could not calculate, or count beyond ten) Best wishes |

112 | What is the "WORD OF KNOWLEDGE"? | 1 Cor 13:2 | biblicalman | 228829
As you would expect there are differing views on this question. Some from 1 Cor 13.2 would see it as a special knowledge concerning spiritual things. This was especially important when there was no New Testament. Compare Col 1.9; Eph 1.17; although with the gift the knowledge would be especially heightened. On the other hand we might see this as the gift of wisdom. Others, because the gift of revelation (1 Co 14.26) is not mentioned would see it as the gift of receiving knowledge about events through revelation, the kind of gift enjoyed by Agabus (Acts 11.28) and Peter (Act 5.1 ff).. In my view the choice lies between these two. |

113 | can some one be out of the book of life | Rev 17:8 | biblicalman | 228825
In ancient days cities retained two books, a record of the living from which names were erased on death, and a book of worthies, people who had done some great thing whose names were never erased. The second is in mind in Malachi 3.16. Moses had the first book in mind when he offered to have his name erased from the book of the living for Israel's sake (Exodus 32.32). He was not offering to suffer eternally, but indicating his willingness to die for them. The Psalmist may have had both in mind when he said, 'let them be blotted out of the book of the living, let them not be enrolled among the righteous'(Psalm 69.28). When Jesus said to His disciples, 'rejoice that your names are written in Heaven' (Luke 10.20) He had the book of the righteous in mind. This is the same book as John had in mind in Rev 17.8; 13.8 were he speaks of those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life from the foundation of the world. It is probably that same book that is in mind in Phil 2.3. It is quite clear that if someone's name has been written in a book eternally it will not be blotted out. These are the names of the redeemed. The verse that causes problems is Rev 3.5 were Jesus says, 'He who conquers will be clad thus in white garments, and I wlll not blot his name out of the book of life, I will confess his name before my Father and before His angels. This may well have been the book of the living so that Jesus is saying 'he will never die'. We do know that sometimes God does bring death on Christians as a punishment (1 Cor 11.30). The fact that it is called the book of life in contrast with the Lamb's book of life (which is clearly deliberately separately identified) is against the idea that the same book is in mind. It should also be noted that the emphasis is not on the fact that names will be blotted out, but on the fact that they will not be. The book of life in Rev 20.l5 must be the Lamb's book of life. Thus someone can be blotted out of the book of the living, but they cannot be blotted out of the Lamb's book of life. |

114 | can God seperate the joining of flesh? | Matt 19:5 | biblicalman | 228807
Hi. Welcome to the forum. Husband and wife are made one flesh by sexual union. That is why an unconsummated marriage can be annulled. But once two people have been united in that way they become one (Matt 19.5-6), even if it is with a prostitute (1 Cor 6.16) There is no suggestion anywhere that God will break that union. It is man who breaks the union by having sex with another person. That then means that the innocent party is freed from the union. They may divorce and marry again with God's approval. Clearly, however, we have to take into account God's forgiveness, especially when an offence was committed before conversion. However there would appear to be two cases where divorce is permitted other than for a sexual offence. One is where a Christian is married to an idolater who refuses to give up idolatry. That would appear to be the implication of Ezra 9.1-2. Notice that the foreign women in question were idolaters. The other would appear to be where a Christian is married to a non-Christian who as a result decides to break up the marriage (1 Cor 7.12-13). (The Christian should not seek the divorce unless the non-Christian is engaging in antiChristian oppression. Otherwise divorce is forbidden. Moses never actually authorised divorce. That was the interpretation of Deut 24.1-4 by the Pharisees. But Jesus said that God did not acknowledge that interpretation (Matthew 19.8-9). And that even Deut 24 had been written because of the hardness of men's hearts. But Deut 23.1-4 did not permit divorce. It simply regulated it. |

116 | Order of the books of the bible? | Luke 24:44 | biblicalman | 228786
The order is based on the Septuagint (Greek translation) of the Old Testament as perpetuated by Jerome. It is based basically on similarity of subject matter. The Hebrew text puts the books in a different order, but includes all the same books. The Jews divided the Old Testament into: THE LAW THE PROPHETS THE HOLY WRITINGS (Hagiographa) This latter was confirmed by Jesus after His resurrection when He spoke of 'The Law, the Prophets and the Psalms' (Luk 24.44). He cited the Psalms because it was the largest book among the Holy Writings but it was intended to include the others. The books to be included were finally settled by the Rabbis but were largely based on tradition that had come down to them. The important thing is that Jesus confirmed them and never argued against the inclusion or omission of any book. This is also the Jewish canon. Best wishes |

117 | Doubt | John | biblicalman | 228778
Well one thing you cann do is read John's Gospel prayerfully on your knees and ask yourself, Who does Jesus portray Himself to be? He claimed for example that He was due to the same honour as the Father (5.23), that He did always what the Father did (5.19), and that he who had seen Him had seen the Father (14.7-9). He also claimed that He had been with the Father in glory before the world was (17.5). Elsewhere He is portrayed as the Creator and sustainer of all things (John 1.1-4; Colossians 1.16-17; Hebrews 1.1-3). Do you really think that a few little diseases and disablements would be a problem for Him? Best wishes |

119 | Question about upcoming projects? | Bible general Archive 4 | biblicalman | 228700
While it is not for me to tell Lockman's what to do I suspect that they will not produce such a Bible based on inferior texts. There are continuing discoveries of early papyrus texts which underline quite definitely that the Byzantine text is a late text. There is not reslly a debate about that. You should read an up to date book on textual criticism written by genuine textual scholars, not by people seeking to sustain an unsustainable theory who do not actually study the texts concerned. Best wishes |

120 | What does dead to sin in Roman 6:2 mean | Rom 6:2 | biblicalman | 228645
It means that we see ourselves as having died with Christ because He died for us. Having been made one with Him by the drenching of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12.12-13) His death becomes our death. Thus we are to reckon on it as true (Rom 6.11) and live our lives accordingly, for it also means that we have risen with Him. But we must not isolate its meaning from what has gone before. Our whole salvation depends on the fact that Christ died for us, and that we have by faith entered into His death, taking the benefit of it for ourselves. He has borne our sin. We have received the gift of righteousness. We cannot do this and continue to live unrighteously. Physically nothing happens. It is all in the realm of the Spirit, and in how we view sin and life. But clearly as our being made spiritually one with Christ is a reality, His power is available for us to be able to carry it into genuine experience. Are we still tempted? Yes we are tempted more than ever because we become objects of attention for Satan and his minions (Ephesians 6.10 ff). The Scripture makes clear that the Christian is often under temptation (1 Cor 10.13). Yes they can still sin, for he was speaking to people who were battling against sin and seeking to give them a new attitude towards it. If a man continues in sin without seeking forgiveness it is unlikely that he has been truly born from above, for his Shepherd would not allow him to continue in that way. Thus yes, he would be eternally damned if he did not come to repentance. But no genuine Christian can continue in such a way for long without experiencing God's chastening to bring him to repentance. 'Whom the Lord loves, He chastens' (Heb 12.6). There is a huge difference. For the one who is 'dead to sin' as a consequence of 'dying with Christ' has had brought home to him the true nature of sin, and has received the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus, Who will raise him up and enable him to walk in newness of life. |
