102 | First rain and first rainbow | Gen 9:13 | azurelaw | 183095
Gen 2:5 Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. Gen 2:6 But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground Had it never rained between the creation of Adam and the floods? How was the land outside of Eden nurtured? Was it the first time rainbow (we know that it is caused by the reflection and refraction of the rays of the sun shining on the falling rain or tiny water drops, I have seen rainbow - even a double-rainbow by the side of a waterfall on a sunny day) appeared after the flood but never before? Or it did, but God only made it a covenant with Noah after the flood? Shalom Azure |

103 | Careful use of one's freedom | Rom 15:1 | azurelaw | 182575
1 Cor 8 For verse 13, was it the end of Paul's teaching concerning our careful use of freedom for the sake of not stumbling a weak brother (sister)? I think there are cases in modern days (even in church) that the weaknesses are caused by irrationality, non-sensibility or ignorance. Are there any parallel discussion (with reference to Ch 8) in Paul's letter mentioning that we are also responsible for helping the weak brother/sister to grow? (In verse 13, Paul said : ... I will NEVER eat ... - NIV). So, if a certain weakness sounds really unreasonable but risks the possibility of causing a brother/sister to stumble, do we have to really give up the specific freedom of action FOREVER? |

104 | the book of Job | Job 42:7 | azurelaw | 182383
1/ Where was that spirit from? God? or Satan? I suppose it was not from God for God rebuked Eliphaz (42:7) for what he said about Him. 2/ Was it natural that people at that time regard disasters, illness, etc. as symbols of God's punishment on one's sinful acts? In that case, we could understand why Job's 3 friends had those comments against Job. 3/ Job's 3 friends were indeed very sincere (it seems to me) as we can see how they reacted when they saw Job (2:11 to 13). I hardly see people (include me) nowadays treat their friends in such manner. Strange is that Job did not get any comfort from them but more hurt instead. What lesson can I learn in the book of Job regarding friendship? Shalom Azure |

105 | Church for believers only? | Acts 2:39 | azurelaw | 181327
Dear Doc, Your quote : "... by taking in persons who have never been born again ... it is a loss rather than a gain... " Is the church solely (both physical and functional) for believers? What I have experienced in my church, we have couples with unbelieving spouses joining us. Some finally repent, some not yet. We also have a sister in our cell group who admitted that she converted to Christ but still cannot restrain from her adultery behaviour (we have talked to or even scolded her about her sinful behaviour already, but she said she cannot stop it and perfer the man over going to church). However, she is so much attracted by our fellowship that she keeps on joining us (our cell group gathering). We would like to keep her in hoping that she would not be lost forever. We really don't know what to do but prayers. Shalom Azure |

106 | Comforting scriptures and poems | Bible general Archive 3 | azurelaw | 180842
Our dear and loving retired old pastor has become widowed a month ago. He lives alone for his only daughter lives in America. Yesterday, when he shared with us in the prayer group, he said he was still making his way to adapt to the loneliness. Everything at home reminds him of his beloved wife. I want to email him some comforting scriptures and poems which can make him feel the sweetness of our Lord Jesus, but nothing comes to my mind. Any recommendation? Thanks. Shalom Azure |

107 | Who are the heads of the widows? | Eph 5:22 | azurelaw | 180479
Ephesians 5:22 We know from the bible, a daughter is submissive to her father, a wife to her husband. What about the widows and the divorced women? Who will be their heads? Are they under the cover of church instead? Azure |

110 | The risk of emptying oneself? | NT general Archive 1 | azurelaw | 179832
Matthew 12:43-45 Is it talking about a so-call believer who acknowledged his own sin and determined to abandon it (...the unclean spirit goes out of a man...), but failed to accept and follow the Word / the Holy Spirit, thus emptying himself (... finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order ...). On the other hand, he was possessed with those heresy, false doctrines, worldly philosopy, etc. (...other spirits more wicked than itself...), and his condition was even worse than before? I don't know if my such understanding correct. I have been stuck with this scripture for quite some time. I believe some of you will be able to guide me through. Thanks Azure |

111 | Biblical guildelines on serving communit | Luke 12:42 | azurelaw | 179532
Biblical guildelines on serving community? Our church has received a request for special offering from a sister branch (I don't know how it termed in English. We belong to the same denomination but just serve different regions of the city and our church is financially independent but they are not). They have deficit almost every year and they rely on other sister branches' special financial offering to help their operation. In order to understand more of their situation, each sister branch assigns a representative to sit in their meeting (4 times a year). The main reason for their inadequate offering received from their congregation is because of that the community they serve are the low income group people. Most of them are single-parent families and new immigrants of low education or unskilled people. It is a district with serious social problem. Today in our monthly deacon's meeting, we have to decide the allocation of the special offering whether it should be offered to this sister branch or another organisation. We all think that we should help this sister branch. However, when our representative further updated us on the situation, I found it questionable (it sounds so to me) on their usage of the money. She said that they have organized quite a lot of entertaining activities (e.g. picnics, outings, social gatherings) providing a big portion of subsidy for the participants (where most of them are out-sider, just a small portion of regular church members). By doing so, they hope to attract (I wanted to use "lure") people to church. I hardly agree to such practice. Although we should serve the poor and needy people, this is not the way it should be. I believe what really attracts people to church has been fully demonstrated in Acts (i.e. the gospel and love within true-believers in church). Nothing to do with materials and benefits. Therefore, I proposed that the amount should be offered for the purpose of education or training. However, I would like to know the biblical guidelines for us to serve the community. Thanks for your help. Love in Christ. Azure |

112 | Choir prophesying | 1 Chr 25:2 | azurelaw | 179230

113 | Choir prophesying | Col 3:16 | azurelaw | 179228
Are these part of the system applying in today's Sunday worship at church that: verse 2: for the section of teaching and bible reading? verse 3: for the choir? Both have the function of prophesying, are they serving different aspects as to the kind of prophet we know in OT? If choir prophesy, it is a very interesting attribute to let the choir member know of it. It is because I always want to spare some time with them to share the spiritual message of the hymn during our rehearsal. It would be very convincing for me to talk to them on such arrangement. Thanks for your biblical guidance. Azure |

114 | 1 Kings Chapter 13 | 1 Kin 13:1 | azurelaw | 178836
1/ Verse 1 : ...a man of God..., Verse 11: ... a certain old prophet. Is this "certain old prophet" not from God? What is the difference between 'a man of God' and 'prophet' since I see the two are used interchangably in the OT? Is the term 'prophet' used generally as a spokesman of God or gods in the OT, but 'a man of God' refers specifically to the true prophet from God? 2/ Why did that old prophet lied to the man of God? 3/ What is the teaching here? Was it teaching us that God does not contradict himself? 4/ Why was the punishment so severe? Thanks for helping. Shalom Azure |

115 | 1 King 15:14 Asa had gone astray? | 1 Kin 15:14 | azurelaw | 177941
1 King 15:14 second part Asa's heart was fully committed to the Lord all his life (NIV) or all his days (both NASB and Amplified). 2 Chronicles 16, it mentioned that: Asa had done a foolish thing that he relied on the king of Aram (verse 7 to 9) Asa showed his resentment toward the seer's charge. He also relied not on God but the physicians concerning his feet illness. So, how should we interpret the description on 1 King 15:14 second part? Did Asa finally repent before his death? Thanks and in Christ. Azure |

116 | Can pastors retire? | Bible general Archive 3 | azurelaw | 177638
First of all, I would like to declare that I mean no offence to any retired pastors here (if any). My question is generated from my curiosity and my understanding or perseption as to the life-long commitment of a pastor. If I am wrong, kindly correct me with scritpural support. My question is: Can a pastor retire? or Can a pastor not retire? My understanding is that once a person is called to commit himself fully to serve Christ (here, of course I should not limit it to the pastor, instead, every Christian should commit his/her life fully and life-long to Christ) as a pastor, can he retire someday just like those people having their retirement in the society? We see so many examples in the Bible - Moses, Paul, Peter - who demonstrated a life-long pastoring a certain group of people until death, why do we have retired pastors nowadays? Thanks for any scriptural guidiances. God bless you all. Azure |

117 | 1 Corinthians 7:17 to 28 | 1 Cor 7:19 | azurelaw | 177596
Good day to you, brothers and sisters: If my below questions are repeated in past posts, kindly direct me to them. Scripture from my NIV bible 1 Corinthians 7:17 to 24 Paul said: ...each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him... Q: What did Paul mean? In what aspect(s) did this apply? How should I interpret it in modern days? 1 Cor 7:25 to 28 Q: What kind of present crisis did Paul mean in verse 26? (problem of adultery in Corinthian church? female outnumbered male?) Q: In verse 28, why did Paul specifically mention that marrying or a virgin marrying was not sinning? Was it not understood that it was not sin? Thanks for any help. God bless. Azure |

118 | John 20:23 | John 20:23 | azurelaw | 176983
Can anyone explain this verse? How should we interpret it together with Matthew 18:18 and 22? The teacher in our Church explained the second part (if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained) that if we do not forgive the sins of others, their sins retained in your heart. That is you are always in a situation that you memorize their sins. In doing so, you are infact bothered by their sins. That is why we should forgive. Thanks for any help. Azure |

119 | Love or spoil our brother? | John 7:24 | azurelaw | 176033
Love or spoil our brother? 1 Peter 4:8, Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Matthew 7:3, Do not judge, or you too will be judged..... When seeing some improper behaviour or misconduct of a brother or sister (his/her behaviour affects the smooth operation of a certain function in church) , some chose to be silent (while some over reacted with anger) instead of reminding the person for the reasons that: 1/ we are told to love and tolerate our brothers. 2/ we are not in a position to judge, only God can judge man. Though we should not judge, can we escape from the duty of giving warning or advice (as prophecies did in the OT)? If we refrain from giving warning or advice, the person's misconduct or improper behaviour could have continued. In that case, we are just spoiling our brother/sister and we might be resposible for his/her such behaviour. I need biblical advice. |

120 | Killing of Joab and Adonijah | OT general | azurelaw | 175928
