1 | Conjecture or opening scripture? | Not Specified | loobylight | 160366
Hi. I am preaching this week on Rev 3 - the letter to the Laodicean church. I have felt compelled to 'rewrite' that letter to my own congregation. Where do you think the line might be between heresy and conjecture and opening up the scripture? I ahve stayed true to the scripture. Yes, i have embellished and opened out the word - eg 'are you stale?' etc. helpful insight welcome! Loobylight PS - have not used this forum before so please go easy on me! |

2 | Will you pray with me? | James 5:16 | loobylight | 160365
Wow - i have jus started to use this forum and am appaled at the self righteous and moral high ground taken towards someone needing to cry out to other Christians to share in their grief and angst. Where is your pastoral foundation? How would Jesus respond to Sunny? Do we need to have judgement on lifestyle? Do we need to answer such pain with clever use of scripture? Sunny, you need prayer, and you will get it. Many understand what this feels like. Many know that you need to feel Jesus' presence and His oversihght on the situation. may you find God's peace. L |

4 | Conjecture or opening scripture? | Rev 22:19 | loobylight | 160402
We have been preaching through the seven letters - ths is the last one. i want to be direct! But direct to prompt heart responses not direct to attack or condemn. i merely want people to consider - would Jesus write this to me? Would it be relevant to me? What would my response be if it were me he was writing to. etc etc. 'rewrite' is too harsh a word - i am not suggesting for one moment that what i ma preaching is equivalent to scripture - and i am not arrogant enough to suggest that i can write prophetically to my own church. merely using the word and attempting to take it straight to people's hearts for them to do their own weighing up. Thanks. L
5 | Conjecture or opening scripture? | Rev 22:19 | loobylight | 160462
I agree. and certainly Rev 22:18ff provides a stark reminder to teh responsibilities of teaching and preaching. But i am not teaching on the book of revelation, nor am i trying to reinterpret it for my own cause. I am trying to provide sensible and proper application. What is the purpose of scripture unless it is to correct, teach and so on. the scripture itself will do this. It will be read to our congregation first - within the context of an Anglican service. After this the 'preaching' is considered to be a space for allowing God to prompt his people into making a heart response. This can be done in a number of ways - after all God is well able to work through mine and everyone else's weakness. Having heard my colleagues preach the previous 6 letters my congregation and listening to the cngregation i have heard several mutter about the relevance of this to them. Suggesting Revelation is merely a dream or an abstract idea has provided these people with an intersting church history lesson interspersed with some intersting sociological, geographical and cultural insights as the the time when John wrote this letter. This is an attempt to ask the congregation (and myself as a member of the congregation) whether this letter speaks directly to us or not. I say 'or not' because this is also a possiblity - inasmuch as perhaps as a church we aren't 'nether hot nor cold', and perhaps as a church we have opened the door when we have heard Jesus knock. But hey, let's all reflect on that for a while! I take your point about the use of voice. I am an experienced preacher and am fairly well versed in how delivery makes (or breaks) a sermon (good or otherwise). And remember no sermon or preacher is ever perfect. The Holy Spirit takes those words and rests them onto a persons ears and hearts and shaes them. many a time have i heard what i consider to be a poor preach and people have been touched and overwhelmed and changed by the word they have heard. Thank God for that. So here I build upon - I do not add or take away from - the scripture. Semantics - possibly. But in good faith, bearing in mind my repsonsility, the risk or God's judegment as clearly pointed out to me. Never do i assert my authority over the scripture. it is clear that this sermon is designed to provide questions for each of us to answer - i am not teaching the Greek facts/the cultural context of the time/the whys and wherefores and what migh John actually mean etc. Good grief - Revelaton is one of the most misunderstood of all books in the bible. So finally (!) considering this even more I am confident that this sermon will assert the scripture, will neither add or take away, will preach nothing but the truth, and with God's grace will enable each person present on Sunday morning to take the word, chew it over in their own minds and hearts, weigh it up for themselves and then make a choice for how they will respond to it. Surely this is fine.....! L |

6 | Justify Leviticus 20:13 | Rev 22:19 | loobylight | 160463
Matthew 5:37-39 keep that cheek turned. Let's remember Jesus' primary command ('cf John 13:34)and keep ourselves in check since we will all be judged on our own merits. Jesus does not condemn, but God's Spirit gently works with our own consciouses and hearts to restore us to Him - to be living God's kingdom not our own flesh (or other) desires. If that means we are called to repentance for sexual sin (homosexual or otehrwise) then that will be for the eventual good of the person concerned. reach out in love, rooted in Jesus' words. Throwing around OT scripture can be hurtful and condemning like this does not show the real life changing power of God. So shoudl it be changed? Why should the verse be changed? Does the bible stand up today as 6,000 years ago? Why not? Does God change? |
