If we are to believe that the New Testament is the inerrant word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit (which I do), then this can only be a command from God. 2 Peter 3:15, 16 says that Paul was given his wisdom from God. Acts 9:15 shows us that Jesus chose Paul to deliver His message to the Gentiles. It's obvious that we are now all one in Jesus, but we are still different. Jesus always acknowledged the Father as being greater, yet He himself was God (Col. 2:9). He was happy to serve and to do the will of the Father, He never tried to usurp the Father's authority and was always in complete submission. He knew He and the Father are one (John 10:30) just as He wanted us to be one (John 17:17). That is why in 1 Tim. 2 Paul links this command back to Adam and Eve. In his letter to the Corinthinians Paul challenges us that is we are spiritual or a prohpet we should acknowledge the silence of women (in context and harmony with other scripture) in church a command of the Lord's. 1 Cor. 14:34-38. I think the only two options here are that women are not allowed to teach and have authority over any man. Or that this is a translation error and the correct rendering is that WIVES are not allowed to teach and have authority over their HUSBANDS. However, the latter I think would just be too greater shift from what has always been taught. Jesus Himself has the choice of His apostles and all were men (Mark 3:12-18). Even after His resurection He chose Matthias (Acts 1:23-26) and then Paul. |
