Is the Jewish bible (Torah) identical to the Christian bible (Pentateuch), word for word? If so, did it come from the same original, I assume, Hebrew manuscripts? Do the Jewish people recognize the rest of the OT? Is there something in the Jewish religion that causes them to not recognize Christ and the new testament?

I had someone ask me what the primary language was that Jesus spoke and I thought Hebrew, however upon some research via the web, I discovered that most believe it was aramaic, as that was the primary language spoke throughout that region at the time jesus was growing up. Anyone have anything to add to that? Also, how closely is aramaic to arabic? (besides it sounds similar) Thanks! Clayton |

I've heard it said that the newer more modern bible translations are watered down and even inaccurate in comparison to the King James version. What are the facts, anyone? I wanted a most literal, word for word translation and was led to the NASB after some research. Don't they come from the same ancient bible manuscripts? Also, does the Tanakh or Torah have the New Testament as the christian bible does.

I would like to know your thoughts on study bibles with commentaries in terms of do you feel that they should be avoided to prevent any bias influence of the commentators and rely on none other than the Holy Spirit for the understanding of scripture, or otherwise? I have ran into some concerns with my own study bible, such as commentators using non biblical documents, although similar to events in the bible, some historical fact and otherwise to shed light on biblical truth which concerns me. Also, I feel that you run the risk of someonse elses interpretation that may not be completely accurate. I've been encouraged to only study from a bible that only uses cross references so that you are able to use scripture to interpret scripture in parallel.

Isn't it true that ancient bible manuscripts have been found many miles and years apart from each other, however support one another confirming the authenticity of scripture?
6 | Rapture | Not Specified | fcs375 | 213917
I recently had a discussion regarding the rapture of the church during a bible study (not specifically about that), however the individual leading the bible study which I trust does not understand scripture to support a pre-trib rapture of the church and that a pre-trib rapture is more of a north american belief due to the bias influence of dispensationalism as with schofield, however we agreed that we should be ready as if the Lord is coming today and really the rapture is not a primary concern as our salvation is. Although much debated, It seems that more people do believe in a pre-trib rapture, versus the later, and I admit I don't fully understand it and believe that perhaps the Lord has done this on purpose. I want to study this more in depth to gain a solid understanding if the Lord allows, and would like to know from those of you who have studied this scripture intently what your thoughts are. Thank you in advance! C.S. |

1 Thessalonians 4:17 "After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever." Based on this scripture, it is evident that a rapture like event will take place. There is much debate on when this will occur. It seems as if more people believe in a pre-trib rapture, however personally I don't find scripture to support that, although I don't claim to know it all either. When looking back at scripture, there are times when the Lord saved people from destruction, i.e. Lot when he destroyed soddom and gamorra. I know this doctrine is not a matter of salvation, however because I beleive that the bilble has one truth, I believe we ought to know it. Anyone willing to shed some light on this subject?? |

Thank you for your response and agree with most of what you said. I'm always interested in other peoples views on certain subjects such as this one, and tend to be open minded in most cases. I must add however, personally I have decided to go away from a study bible and just use exclusively a classic reference bible (NASB), and really just rely on the Holy Spirit to teach and guide me, meditating on the word of God. However, I certainly think that a concordance is very helpful and would not discourage a solid, well grounded Christian from using a good study bible, as they are less likely to be mis-guided from a potential bias commentary, or mis-interpretation. I always find biblical facts interesting, although is not the starting point and foundation of our salvation, other than what Christ did for us on the cross.

Hello, and thank you for your reply. Yes, some are called to pastor and teach with exhortation or lead in a ministry of some capacity. However, when it comes to bible study, I firmly believe that one must study God's word first and foremost, asking the Holy Spirit to teach them and meditate upon it, and sometimes may require one to read over and over again. Good sound commentary has it's proper place in study but should be secondary, and discernment is very important. God bless you!

Thank you for your response. The most important thing to remember is that commentary may have it's proper place, however God's word should be first and foremost and not neglected. I recommend to get a good reference bible (I prefer NASB) with a concordance to study with, that way you can cross reference scripture. Pray first asking that the Holy Spirit would teach you and meditate upon the word of God. May God bless you!

WOW!!! Quite the dissertation I must say. It appears that you have taken this whole thing on commentary way out of context and I must apologize if in any way I led you to that, as this was never my intention. Thank the Lord that we have the freedom to even read a bible and to attend churches freely in this country. God's word is infallible, men are and you must remember that. And yes, of course, The Lord has used Godly men past and present to teach and preach the word of God, from the pulpit or in a classroom environment, or through commentary, however I strongly encourage any believer to read the word of God first and foremost and use a cross reference bible to help one understand and learn scripture using scripture and make the use of commentary or foot note (key word here) SECONDARY, and with discernment. You have the freedom to choose and express your opinion as you have and thank you! May God bless you in your spiritual growth.

First of all, with gentleness and respect, I must say that it is a false accusation to say that I'm judging anyone here. And yes, I've heard the name Spurgeon, and will not deny that the Lord has used him in a way that would honor his kingdom, as he does with many others as well, e.g Billy Graham whom is a great name in the work of the Lord as well. I just have to say for the last time here, that there are some of you whom have greatly taken things out of context and I'm very sorry for that. In fact, some of the accusations etc. that have been made here on this forum have really surprised me. In fact, I've chosen to end my affiliation with this site, nothing against the Lockman foundation. May God bless you in your spiritual growth!

Tim, Thank you for your kind words. I certainly never intended anything harmful here, as you have understood what I was trying to convey. The Lord has used people in poweful ways and I'd be a fool to disregard that. I was feeling discouraged from some of the responses I received, as I felt that I was being accused of something I didn't mean to do, even after attempting clarification. Praise God for you and your concern. The last thing I want to do is look like I'm self promoting or putting myself above others. God bless you! |
