1 | Exhortations to Ardent Prayer | Gen 32:26 | dbmurrell | 46118
What an exhortation to wrestle in prayer! Matt 11:12 echoes the sentiment: "And from the days of John the Baptist until the present time, the kingdom of heaven has endured violent assault, and violent men seize it by force [as a precious prize--a share in the heavenly kingdom is sought with most ardent zeal and intense exertion]." C.H. Spurgeon adds, "...An old Puritan said, 'Prayer is a cannon set at the gate of Heaven to burst open its gates.' You must take the city by storm if you would have it. You will not ride to heaven on a featherbead; you must go on a pilgrimage." [Spurgeon on Prayer and Spiritual Warfare, CH Spurgeon, Whitaker House, 1998] |

2 | why did Adonijah take hold of altar | 1 Kin 1:50 | dbmurrell | 51551
Reading the commentary on the horns of the altar was a blessing to me. I hadn't made that connection before.
3 | He cannot deny Himself | 2 Tim 2:13 | dbmurrell | 47221
What comfort this is! He chooses to contend with us (Jer 2:9) in order to restore us to righteousness, and will not abandon us (John 14:18; Heb 13:5) even if we are faithless. Note that the reason is "He cannot deny Himself" -- pointing not only to the irrevocable promise, but to the Deposit (Eph 1:13,14): He, Himself as Holy Spirit, within us when re-created in His Image (2 Cor 3:18). |
