1 | The symbols of the sea and net | Matt 4:19 | Stevscott | 172555
The sea is a symbol of the world. Remember it was the sea that Christ calmed and which will be as calm as glass in the end. Andrew and Peter were called to be fishers of men in this sea. We cast the net as often as he wills but know that it is the Spirit that directs the men into the net.
2 | A new name in Christ | John 1:42 | Stevscott | 118670
Whenever we come to Christ he gives us a new name in the sense that we have a new direction in life. Simon became Peter (Cephas) meaning rock. It would be his duty to be a rock in the founding of the church. When we come to Christ he gives us gifts to fulfil our duties. In a very real sense this is our new name.
3 | Philip's destiny | John 1:43 | Stevscott | 118672
Christ's omniscience requires that we say he went to Galilee to meet Philip. That is, it was Philip's destiny that he would meet Jesus. If Philip had gone elsewhere Jesus would have met him anyway. In the same way we can be confident that he will not fail us. He knows where we are and when we need him.
4 | The condition of our hearts | John 2:24 | Stevscott | 119390
Signs are important in the gospels because they are meant to prove that Jesus is the Messiah. However, these people appeared to only follow him because of the signs. It may be that they wanted to be entertained. Whatever their superficial reason for "believing" it is obvious that Jesus knew their hearts and was not impressed by what he knew to be there. May our hearts be impressed only by the fact that Jesus came into our world to make it possible for us to come to God.
