4 | Why is bigamy ok but adultry isn't? | Not Specified | Rolff | 221908
The seventh commandment in Exodus 20, tells us not to commit adultry. Clear as can be. But a chapter later in Exodus 22-23 we are given rules for a second wife. Two wives (bigamy) appear to not be sin in the Pentateuch but adultry is sin. What is the difference? they both have two different women in your bedroom. This is an honest question that is gnawing at me. |

16 | moses, hebrew or egypian etymology | Bible general | Rolff | 242935
Moses' gene pool is understood. Most of the main Hebrew characters in Daniel had both Chaldean and Hebrew names. Is Moses a Hebrew or Egyptian name, i.e. is this the name pharaoh or his parents gave him? Is Gershom a Hebrew or Egyptian name, since his father was Hebrew but his mother was Egyptian. I could not find this info in ISBE or any of my other commentaries. Really appreciate being able to ask my unique questions in this forum.
17 | revelation, inspiration, illumination | Bible general Archive 4 | Rolff | 207253
I agree with the previous post, that people will make the words say what they want them to say out of ignorance or purpose. But a quick and dirty definition of the three words from a Conservative Protestant theology would be as follows Revelation is from God. The Bible is God's revealed will. (We could mention the Book of Revelation, which is the Apocalypse, or unveiling of the future. Revelation means unveiling.) Inspiration is the method God used to share his revealed will to the authors of Scripture. Illumination is where we are at. As we read God's Word the Spirit of God illuminates our minds to his Word. When we turn on a light the room is illuminated. As we read Scripture the Holy Spirit illuminates our minds. Hope this helps |

18 | Clarification needed, Justme | Bible general Archive 4 | Rolff | 207751
Senator Joe Biden's stated religion is Roman Catholic. Justme wasn't pushing a political agenda he/she asked us to pray. I see nothing in the rules to forbid prayer on this forum. Seems to me Justme was right on the money reminding us to remember the following passage: "First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity." 1 Timothy 2:1-2 |

19 | Need feedback on Genesis? | Bible general Archive 4 | Rolff | 210572
I missed your question. Let me go on a bit and you can refine your question if I miss. Genesis means beginning in Greek. Since Genesis is a Hebrew book, the Greek name was introduced in the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures. It is one of the first five books written by Moses called the Pentateuch. In Genesis we find the introduction to God, the beginning of light, stars, dirt, water, birds, bugs, Homo sapiens, both male and female. The beginning of the family, murder, nations, bigamy, war, incest, prostitution and gives hope thru the promise of a redeemer in Genesis 3:15 and 49:10. I am fascinated by the Angel of the Lord, introduced in Chapter 16. He talks like God, allows worship, can do miracles and yet is never called God. Genesis is about beginnings on earth. Revelation takes many of these same themes and shows the satisfaction and completion of the thread started in Genesis. |

20 | Need feedback on Genesis? | Bible general Archive 4 | Rolff | 210576
Homosexuality and Incest, read all about it in Genesis 19. Sin by any name is still sin. The farther we move from creation the less marriage between siblings was necessary. Actually, while it makes sense for Cain to marry one of his sisters, we don’t know where Cain’s wife came from; while I doubt it God could have created her. God knows more about sin than we know about sin; He has watched sin since creation. As much as God hates sin, he put the sin of the world on himself at the cross. Let’s praise God for his creation and cross work. "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him...Sin is what we do when we are not satisfied with God." Copied |
