The Apocrypha are interspersed among the canonical books of the Old Testament in the LXX and Vulgate, but not found in the Hebrew Old Testament. The Jewish people, who produced the Old Testament from the inspiration of God, and Protestants do not consider the Apocrypha canonical. The Roman Catholic Church received the Apocrypha as deuterocanonical at the Council of Trent in 1546.
2 | WHERE DID MAGI'S COME FROM? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ric | 564
I had to look this one up, I never thought about that question before. Good question PYLE! ............................ MAGI (Gr. magoi). Originally a religious caste among the Persians. Their devotion to astrology, divination, and the interpretation of dreams led to an extension in the meaning of the word, and by the first century B.C. the terms "magi" and "Chaldean" were applied generally to fortune tellers and the exponents of esoteric religious cults throughout the Mediterranean world. Magus or "sorcerer" is the name given to Simon (Acts 8:9), Bar-Jesus (13:6), and Elymas (13:8). The "wise men from the East" (Matt 2) are often referred to as "the Magi." Nothing is known of their land of origin, but it is a likely theory that they came from Arabia Felix (Southern Arabia). Astrology was practiced there, and a tradition of Israelite messianic expectation may have survived in the region since the days of the Queen of Sheba. Early legend connects Southern Arabia with Solomon's Israel, but the legend of "the Three Kings" is late and medieval. (NIV Bible Dictionary) |

Can you please give us the passage where this question comes form?
4 | I DO NOT KNOW | Bible general Archive 1 | Ric | 998
I assume this is the passage you are refering to? Mark 13:32 "But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. (NAS) "That day" neither the angels of heaven nor Jesus himself knows the time. Only the Father knows that time. And Jesus, at his ascension, clearly said that it was not for the disciples "to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority" (Acts 1:7). Knowing the future would be a hindrance, not a help to faith. Our responsibility is to get busy and do his work without being concerned about date setting. Jesus' ignorance of the day or hour of his return must be understood in terms of the NT teaching concerning the Incarnation. Jesus purposely laid aside temporarily the exercise of his omniscience as part of what was involved in his becoming a human being. |

5 | What does abomination mean? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ric | 1879
Abomination defined are activities that are offensive in a moral, religious, or even a natural sense of repulsion. Proverbs 6:16 There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, 19 A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers. Jeremiah 8:1 " At that time, declares the LORD, the bones of the kings and officials of Judah, the bones of the priests and prophets, and the bones of the people of Jerusalem will be removed from their graves. 2 They will be exposed to the sun and the moon and all the stars of the heavens, which they have loved and served and which they have followed and consulted and worshiped. They will not be gathered up or buried, but will be like refuse lying on the ground. 3 Wherever I banish them, all the survivors of this evil nation will prefer death to life, declares the LORD Almighty. 9 | Difference between fear and afraid? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ric | 3852
My NIV Bible Dictionary states: FEAR (Heb. yirah, Gr. phobos). This word has two principal meanings: (1) that apprehension of evil that normally leads one either to flee or to fight and (2) that awe and reverence felt in the presence of a higher authority (be it parent, husband, or especially God). The word "reverend," which occurs only in the KJV of Psalm 111:9 (NIV has "awesome"), means literally "to be feared" and is used only for God. And my Expository Dictionary states: Fear as an emotion. OT uses of "fear" often indicate the all-too-familiar feeling of terror. Adam and Eve fled from God in the Garden of Eden, Adam later explaining, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked" (Ge 3:10). A basic cause of this emotion is awareness of vulnerability because of sin or because of the perceived power of another to do harm. The Hebrew people experienced such terror at Sinai (Dt 5:5), and Saul was gripped by fear when he saw the size of the massive Philistine army (1 Sa 28:5). The antidote for the emotion of fear is the conviction that God is for us and with us. God told Israel he would be with his covenant people. So Moses exhorted Israel, "Do not be faint-hearted or afraid; do not be terrified or give way to panic before them. For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory" (Dt 20:3-4). |

10 | which bible translation is true? | Bible general Archive 1 | Ric | 31830
All "translations" are just that; "Translations". But I believe that the NASB is the most accurate "word for word" translation we have today in Modern English. All translations have some error in them, because mere men translate them, and we all make mistakes. I study from a lot of different translations (NASB, NIV, NLT, KJV, and a few others) to make sure I do understand God's Word, and all of this with the help of the Holy Spirit. In God's Grace, Ric |

15 | Kish Connections | Bible general Archive 1 | Ric | 37176
I looked it up in my NIV Bible Dictionary: KISH (Heb. qish, bow, power). 1. A Benjamite, a son of Abiel and father of Saul, Israel's first king (1 Sam 9:1, 3; 10:11, 21). Called Cis in KJV of Acts 13:21. 2. A son of Abi Gibeon, a Benjamite (1 Chron 8:30; 9:36). 3. A Levite of the family of Merari (23:21-22; 24:29). 4. A Levite and a Merarite who assisted in the cleansing of the temple in Hezekiah's time (2 Chron 29:12). 5. A Benjamite, an ancestor of Mordecai, the cousin of Queen Esther (Esth 2:5). It looks like number 1 and number 5 agree. In God's Grace, Ric |

16 | Is Lamec a descendant of Seth or Cain? | Genesis | Ric | 122
GE 4:24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times." GE 4:25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him." 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the name of the LORD. (NIV) ................... It look's like reading this passage that Lamech was born before Seth, so maybe Lamech is a descendant of Cain. |
||||||
17 | Could someone explain these descendances | Genesis | Ric | 138
I looked this up in my Bible dictionary, I don't think it will help you much, but give it a read. .................. LAMECH (Heb. lemekh, meaning undetermined). 1. A son of Methushael (Gen 4:18-24) and a descendant of Cain, who had two wives, Adah and Zillah. His sons founded the nomadic life and the musical arts, and invented metalcrafts and instruments of war. Lamech's song (4:23-24) expresses every feature of Hebrew poetry (alliteration, parallelism, poetic diction, etc.). 2. The son of Methuselah (5:28-31). This man, a descendant of Seth, became the father of Noah. His faith is attested by the name he gave his son, Noah (meaning "rest"), and by the hope of "comfort" (5:29) that he anticipated in his son's life. ................... I'm just a layperson without much Bible study (just Bible study at home and at church), but I'll keep trying to answer posts here - it help's me understand God's Word better too!
18 | sins of father repaid by son? | Genesis | Ric | 879
Exodus 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. (NAS) "punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me" notice the words at the end of this read: "of those who hate me". The full formula includes the important qualifier "of those who hate me." |

19 | how much water allowed the ark to float? | Gen 1:1 | Ric | 114
Genesis 7:17-24.......... Here Genesis tells us that the water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered. That means that the waters rose more than twenty feet over the mountains. And it took over 150 days for the water to recede. ....... That's a lot of H2O! |
