1 | Did the disciples have a choice? | Not Specified | Greg Martin | 37678
Did the disciples have a choice? Jesus, who commands all nature and created the universe with His command, commanded Peter and Andrew, James and John, Matthew, and Levi "Follow Me" Did they have a choice? All the angels and even the demons must obey His command. They have no choice. Did the disciples? Matthew 4:18 And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 Then He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." 20 They immediately left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him. Matthew 9:9 As Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." So he arose and followed Him. Mark 2:14 As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." So he arose and followed Him. |

2 | Mythology and the bible? | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 34996
Is there a question here? I'd be wary of "information" gleened from online discussions. Yes even here. Note that the prophesies of Christ began with God's sentencing of Adam and Eve. So from the beginning the Christ was made known. And do not forget that Israel was in Egypt for 500 years. From what sources do the posters give for their stories? I'm not saying they make these up or repeat what was made up to deceive, but then again they may. How is it that these same can discredit the veracity of the Bible, yet believe secular stories from the same time periods? So was there a question here? |

3 | Why did Jesus have to beborn of a virgin | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 35002
What has already been posted is correct. I like to relate these Truths to things people can actually see (or at least picture) Imagine God's heaven as a canvas of pure white. He will absolutely not let anything but pure white touch the canvass. Now Man is the brush and is given a palette of pure white and ugly, gruesome black. God tells Man not to touch the black but only the white. When man so much as touches the black, his brush is contaminated. when he goes back to the white, the white is contaminated. The result is he is barred from Heaven with no recourse. Now suppose a man is born and never in his entire life touches the black. He only dwells in the pure white. Can he then go to heaven? No. Because his brush is tainted. Even his "pure" white is contaminated and, hence, not pure. He also is barred from Heaven with no recourse. We are all sons of Adam. (Isaiah 64:6 all our righteous acts are like filthy rags) Jesus came as a clean brush and dwelt only in the pure white. (Born of a virgin, sinless life) Now He is able to dwell in heaven. (paint on the canvass) Since the wages of sin is death (Rom 6:23) Christ owed no penalty, but paid it anyway. Because He paid a penalty not due, He is able to apply the justification to an infinite number of those to whom it is due. (John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name) |

4 | What does Bible teach on election? | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 35209
Quite right. This is a topic too broad to be suited for a forum. It is an entire doctrine that can only be covered with extensive study. I'm sure GeneralWas would agree with that, having taught it for a year. In order to answer this question, you'll have to accept ambiguities and mysteries as an answer until hard study is accomplished to understand the broad statements. You have to understand that the whole of God is incomprehensible, so we are left with some apparent "contradictions", that are a result of our limited comprehension. See, I always looked at the generally accepted answer to the question "Can God make a rock so big He can't lift it?" as unsatisfactory. The generally accepted answer is that the question is wrong. I disagree. God is way bigger than that. I believe the answer is "Yes He can make a rock so big He can't lift it; and then He will lift it anyway." Now this question and answer may seem flippant, but it really is not. It illustrates perfectly our limits in understanding the infiniteness of God. The answer to both parts, can He make and can He lift, has to be yes simultaneously. He can make a rock so big He can't lift it. But He will lift it anyway. Well then He didn't make a rock so big He can't lift it. Yes He did, but He will lift it anyway. How can light be both a particle and a wave simultaneously? If you are wondering what in the world this has to do with your question, it is this. God gave us Free will, but He is beyond the limitation of time and knows everything. So free will, election, and predestination are all simultaneously compatible. In other words it is all by His permission and authority, but He knows your heart before you are born - from before the beginning of time. I don't know if this helped or confused... |

5 | Can a person's spirit visit the earth? | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 36189
1 Samuel 28:3-22 Samuel came back and visited Saul. Spiritists and mediums are real. (They can be that is - most are thieves.) Be very careful to avoid these people. Avoid the hororscopes, tarrot card and palm readers, etc. These are real and are of the realm of Satan. |

6 | do babies go to heaven or hell? | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 37672
Jeremiah 1:5 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." says God to Jeremiah. God allows you to make all your own decisions, but he knows what they all are before you are born. Will the baby be saved later in life? God knows now. He knew at the beginning of the World. Your name was written in the Book of Life before the Foundation of the World. Phil 4:3 Rev 2:5; 17:8, 20:15. Revelation 20:15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire. |

7 | Enjoy a beer | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 40425
1 Timothy 5:23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities. The Bible tells us wine is healthy and to drink a little bit. The Pilgrims drank beer because they thought it to be more healthy than water. George Washington's favorite brew was made with pumpkin. Anyone thinking they are "more spiritual" or "holier" than the Pilgrims or George Washington (the most righteous man who ever set foot on this continent) I quote to you Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. Luke 7:33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, "He has a demon.' 34 The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, "Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Jesus drank wine. But to you, top, I caution you Prov 20:1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Prov 21:17 He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich Eph 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, Romans 14:21 It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak. So in other words, no it is not wrong to drink beer or wine in very small quantities and not in public, nor in the company of the weak or offended. |

John 2:10 And he said to him, "Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!" The good wine is strong drink. Luke 7:33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, "He has a demon.' 34The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, "Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Jesus drank wine. |

9 | Crusifiction of Christ | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 41110
All instances of the word cross in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are the word "stauros". This is generally translated "cross" but can mean "stake". In all four gospels, and in every translation, this word is translated as cross in all instances. This will not satisfy a Thomas, because there is no indication by context or useage whether stauros should be translated as cross or stake. However, unlike the quotes from the website cited, that "It never means two pieces of timber placed across one another at any angle, but always of one piece alone." The actual text says it can, and generally does. stauros (stow-ros') from the base of 2476; TDNT - 7:572,1071; n m AV - cross 28; 28 1) an upright stake, esp. a pointed one 2) a cross 2a) a well known instrument of most cruel and ignominious punishment, borrowed by the Greeks and Romans from the Phoenicians; to it were affixed among the Romans, down to the time of Constantine the Great, the guiltiest criminals, particularly the basest slaves, robbers, the authors and abetters of insurrections, and occasionally in the provinces, at the arbitrary pleasure of the governors, upright and peaceable men also, and even Roman citizens themselves 2b) the crucifixion which Christ underwent |

Question: How could they possibly nail both hands and also his feet to a stake? In order to do this the hands would have to be behind the stake, palm side up or above the head. In either case the intent of asphyxiation would not be possible. Try it. You'll prove it to yourself.
11 | Crusifiction of Christ | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 41345
As opposed to the shape of the cross? You've got a good point if you're not one who likes to dig into details and trivial points much. Clearly it is not important what the shape of the cross was, but as a point of interest. I know some get mad and crinkle their nose at discussions that don't tackle earth shattering revelations in doctrine. But some like it, as do I. Important? No. Interesting? Yes. |

No offense taken, and I was not referring to you when I said some get mad and crinkle their nose. It's just a general observation I've noticed here. Some apparently think we can't discuss lighter points or engage in curiosity. That is not to accuse you, as I said, just a general observation.
13 | did the wine from the water make you dr | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 41803
"1) Every non-Christian that I know considers it wrong for a Christian to drink. What does drinking do to our testimony?" Hmmm... 1) Every non-Christian that I know considers it wrong for a Christian to condemn homosexuality. What does condemning homosexuality do to our testimony? or 1) Every non-Christian that I know considers it wrong for a Christian to claim the only way to Heaven. What does claiming the only way to Heaven do to our testimony? This is no point at all. We are not to be judged by the world, but only by God and fellow believers. |

Excellent Point! It has to be a cross because that's the shape God told Israel to paint on their doorposts.

16 | Need guidance, want to talk with someone | Bible general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 74932
Boy do I agree with that. There are arguments here that can be confusing. You have to recognize that every one here knows the only way to heaven is through Christ. All would agree you can not work your way into heaven, but must be saved by the blood of Christ. The arguments are on deep, deep details and non-salvation doctrines. These are those that have no bearing on your salvation, but are only the struggle to understand God in a deeper way. If you are a new Christian, you need milk, not meat. I recommend not reading this forum until you are weaned from the milk. This is no insult, even a car has to start in first gear. Read the Bible. Find a Church that believes in the whole Bible and it's inerrancy and infallibility. Go to Church. Go to it's Bible classes. Pray. |

17 | Why is it that I cannot find Adonai in | OT general | Greg Martin | 36569
You can not find these in the Bible because you are reading an English Bible and these are Hebrew names! You have to translate them to English and then look them up. You can not find the word "rapture" in the Bible either because it comes from the word "rapturo" which is the Greek for the word harpazo which means "to catch away" or "snatch up" |

18 | Why is it that I cannot find Adonai in | OT general | Greg Martin | 37561
Thanks, wannabe. I inadvertantly left out the translated names. Adonai - Lord (look for: "LORD") YHWH - I Am the One Who Is ("I AM") Elohim - The Mighty One ("God") |

19 | Who is the Angel of God or the Lord? | OT general | Greg Martin | 45231

20 | Who is Jesues | NT general Archive 1 | Greg Martin | 34153
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 8:57Then the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?" 58Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." 59Then they took up stones to throw at Him; but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. John 20:28And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" 29Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." |
