5 | How did evil arise? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5387
I understand that the choice to do good or evil lies with those who have free will but how did evil arise in a creation made good by God? |

I have no ulterior motive other than to know the truth.I am a genuine seeker.I also need to know so that I have an answer for those who also ask these questions. But banging me with doctrine won't help.I have also chosen this forum to ask these hard questions because I am unable to ask them in my local church or that there is no one who can answer them
7 | Why do you continue to ask? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5427
Actually I haven't asked my pastor and I don't think I insisted anything, least of all that God made evil.I don't think that the answers given so far are all that convincing about the origin of evil. All I think I can conclude thus far is that God made angels and men capable of evil(and good).
8 | Why do you continue to ask? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5522
Thank you for jumping in.I think your response is the best yet and I think I'll drop the subject. Cephas |

If men and angels can do evil because they have free will and God can do no evil, does it follow that God does not have free will?
10 | Does God have free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5536
Actually the question is not absurd at all.God cannot do whatever he wants eg he cannot do evil.God cannot act against his nature which is perfectly good.It therefore seems to me that men and angels (at least the prefallen ones ) have an ability which God does not or cannot possess.Freewill connotes that we can act against our nature.God cannot do that.My point is not to illustrate that we have something superior to God, but is a further attempt to understand the nature of evil and its origins.I look forward to your further response.Cephas

My son has a computer game in which some of the characters say"We're under attack!". I felt like this too.Thank you for your response and the one from Orthodoxy which some how has put my mind at rest.Bless you. Cephas
12 | Am I being censored? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5625
Is my question a false syllogism?I'm not into "rap".I thought my question was serious.I suppose I could find a scripture to tag my question onto if you like, but it looks to me as though you are imposing some kind of censorship here. Why not have "weird" questions? Otherwise this forum looks like a cosy club for insiders.I would hope that non-Christians could ask questions on this site without fear of ridicule.Naturally I would expect the same for brethren.

Insults are a poor substitute for debate.
14 | Does God have free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5644
I fear I am being mightily misunderstood. If you have been following the correspondence associated with my enquiry about the origin of evil, you might be able to see my question in context.I still think that my question should be addressed in a serious and thoughtful way. Then I can move on.
15 | Does God have free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5645
I don't think there has been endless debate! What has happened is that my serious question has been shouted down. This matter of the origin of evil has been published in a newspaper in my city.It was put up as the cornerstone for atheistic thinking and the reason why artists in particular have abandoned the Christian faith for some sort of hedonistic self realisation spirituality. If we can't address those kind of issues in an effective apologetic way, your "serious bible study" may end up being the preserve of some elite and the lost will continue to be lost. These issues have serious consequences for my own faith too.So please tread carefully.Cephas
16 | Am I being censored? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5658
How can you call me your friend? You have laid an incredibly heavy accusation on me.I forgive you in Jesus' name.
17 | Does God have free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5661
My peace has been disturbed. That is why I turned to my brethren for some meat.I dare not and do not speculate about God's intentions and motives, but I am enjoined to "give a reason for my faith".I fear I have thrown a rock in this pond.It was not my intention to disturb anyone's peace, but to find some answers.I have found some.
18 | Does God have free will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5943
I re-engage this matter with fear and trembling considering the reaction my innocent question provoked before. But here goes.Doesn't free will imply freedom of choice? I choose to act.My acts may be good or evil.I can choose either or both. But God cannot choose to do evil because that would be contrary to his nature.Apparently God does not have the same freedom as we do.God does not have free will in the way we have.
19 | Jesus have own will? | Bible general Archive 1 | Cephas | 5945
Another thought. It seems that Jesus had the choice to do his will or the Father's will.Does this mean that Jesus had his own will apart from the Father? Was it possible for Jesus to act otherwise than in accordance with the Father's will, and does it follow that it was theoretically possible for Jesus to do evil i.e acting not in accordance with the Father's will? |

In a way you have.In no sense did I suggest that God is somehow accountable to us for his actions ( although Moses confronted God about his character- but I'm not as brave as Moses). But God is accountable to himself eg he swears by himself:Heb 6:13His hands may not be tied by his creation but it seems he has tied his own hands.Do you understand the sense of my question now?
