According to "Foxe's Book of Martyrs" this is correct. John Foxe got his information from the well respected writings of Jerome.

Sorry I don't have scripture references. To my knowledge, there is nothing about Peter's death in the Bible. So I posted from Foxes Book of Martyrs which should be historically accurate.

Having recently been involved in converting some Catholics, I would have to say that Mr. Samples needs to get out and actually meet some of these people. They are ill trained and I would venture to say probably not saved. That has been my personal experience anyway.

The 7 Ups 1. Wake Up !! Decide to have a good day. "This is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalms 118:24 2. Dress Up !! The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." I Samuel 16:7 3. Shut Up!! Say nice things and learn to listen. God gave us two ears and one mouth, so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking. "He who guards his lips guards his soul." Proverbs 13:3 4. Stand Up!! . . . for what you believe in. Stand for something or you will fall for anything. "Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good..." Galatians 6:9-10 5. Look Up !! . . . to the Lord. "I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me". Philippians 4:13 6. Reach Up !! . . . for something higher. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path." Proverbs 3:5-6 7. Lift Up !! . . your Prayers. "Do not worry about anything; instead PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING." Philippians 4:6 A POSITIVE THOUGHT If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it. He sends you flowers every spring, and a sunrise every morning. Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen. He could live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart. What about the Christmas gift He sent you in Bethlehem; not to mention that Friday at Calvary. Face it, He's crazy about you. |

5 | Why did Jesus' teaching endanger him? | NT general Archive 1 | Aristarchus | 59501
I agree. And for the same reasons most people don't like those of us that follow Jesus. By our very existence we convict people of their sin, and soon there will come a time when our existence is not so easily tolerated and protected. We in the U.S. will have an exceptionally hard time coming to terms with the changes that are coming. Thank God that His Spirit will give us the words to speak when such times do come.

8 | Does Malachi 3:10 apply to you? | Is 53:5 | Aristarchus | 136594
If you follow that line of thinking then there isn't much in the Bible that we can claim. Whether it be a promise or a command. To whom were the Ten Commandments addressed? Who was commanded to "go into all the world, preaching the gospel"? As you can see, this can become a very slippery slope. Perhaps we should look at the principles that God set forth. Principles such as sacrifice for atonement (animals in the OT, Christ in the NT), giving of our firstfruits, etc. If God's principles hold true in these areas they also hold true in the area of blessings. |

9 | spiritual healing or physical healing? | Is 53:6 | Aristarchus | 49389
You have to look at Isa. 53:4,5. Also check the Hebrew for verse 4. Isaiah 53:4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted . The word "grief" is from the Hebrew "Choliy" (transliteration) and literally means sickness. So, Jesus bore our sickness. Choliy is also translated most often in the OT as "sickness". The word "sorrows" is the hebrew word "mak'ob" and it literally means pain - physical and mental. Now let's look at verse 5 - Isaiah 53:5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. In verse 5, transgressions and iniquities are covered. The Hebrew for each of these words has the same meaning as the English. These are more spiritual in nature. So, there is physical and mental healing covered and also spiritual and emotional healing. Two separate verses are telling us two different things. But it is all one and the same and is all purchased with the blood of Christ. God Bless-----Eric |

10 | spiritual healing or physical healing? | Is 53:6 | Aristarchus | 49399
I was merely pointing out that it is allowed for and covered in the covenant we are under. It is not merely "claiming" it. This is why it is dangerous to even begin a discussion on just one verse. The Bible as a whole must be taken into context. Also, we are talking about "healing" not "miracles". The difference being, a miracle is complete and instantaneous. Healing can be and usually is a gradual process. There is also a profound difference in the healing that is provided for and salvation. Salvation takes us accepting it. That is all, although we will be known by our works. Healing requires living in obedience to Christ. You won't receive all the blessings provided for under our covenant unless you live in obedience to Him. As far as suffering for Christ, I don't find any evidence that our personal ilness or disease is suffering for him. Sickness was a direct result of sin entering the world. Sin comes from Satan and Jesus defeated Satan on the cross...once and for all. I have never had a miracle healing. I have however been healed from chronic problems such as sinusitus and back pain. It took some time but it was conquered through the power of the Word and Jesus Christ, and to Him is all glory due. |

11 | spiritual healing or physical healing? | Is 53:6 | Aristarchus | 49418
I agree completely Ed! I do think we need to take the word for what it says though. There are two different verses there in Isaiah 53 which cover two different things that Christ bore for us. They are both important and useful for the body of Christ. Salvation is, of course, of the ultimate importance. Mark 8:36 "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?" I guess my point is that we don't have to accept sickness. We can fight it - not of ourselves, but through Jesus redemptive power. God Bless |

12 | spiritual healing or physical healing? | Is 53:6 | Aristarchus | 49424
I agree, but isn't God's power shown when believers live full healthy lives? John 10:10 "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." Is abundant life a life full of sickness and disease? I agree that we will have suffering, but it should be suffering for the cause of Christ. Not suffering because we allow Satan to attack us with sickness, guilt, or any number of other things. Ephesians 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. He is able to do so much more with us and for us than we allow Him to. There is so much there if we will just RECEIVE it. He can do more than we can even ask or think! And do it more abundantly!! That is the power that works IN US!! Hallelujah!! God Bless you all! |

13 | Isn't adultrey grounds for divorce? | Hosea | Aristarchus | 58179
Teragram, Your willingness to see your commitment through to the end is admirable. However, this is a very tender subject for many people, full of pain and feelings of betrayal. I would urge you to speak on this subject with love and the true desire to be a help, not as a self-righteous finger pointer about what should and shouldn't be done. You are of course welcome to your opinions, but as one who has been there, I can tell you your attitude is all wrong. This is all written in love, as I assume that you are truly wanting to help someone in what is a nasty situation and not easy to deal with. 2 Tim 2:24 The Lord's bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, |

14 | what if i suspect that she is cheating? | Hosea | Aristarchus | 58180
First - don't jump to rash conclusions. Second - if it is true confront your spouse. Third - be prepared to forgive if your spouse repents. Fourth - take a very hard look at how you have damaged the relationship. Have you been selfish? A spouses main goal should be to minister to our mate. Most often the first thing we ask ourselves is what can he/she do to make me happier. WRONG!! We should be asking, "What can I do to make him/her happy? How can I minister to them and make their day better?" I know it is hard to think that way, but it does and will work. Oops!! :) I better get off my soap box! I will suggest a book though for anyone out there having problems or that would just like to improve their relationship. ----- "Marriage Builders" by Dr. Larry Crabb ------- Excellent book!! God Bless. |

15 | Isn't adultrey grounds for divorce? | Hosea | Aristarchus | 58191
You are right, pain does not change the Word. It should however influence our manner of sharing it. Not to mention that according to Jesus' own words we are fully justified in divorce for marital unfaithfulness. Again, though, my reply was not an argument of your stance or opinion, but in the presentation. Much as you believe we should forgive and let God handle it, I believe we should present advice and/or correction in a loving manner. Especially when dealing with our brothers and sisters in Christ. This is consistent with the Word of God. |

16 | Isn't adultrey grounds for divorce? | Hosea | Aristarchus | 58291
I wasn't aware that I said a lack of "happiness" justified divorce at any time. I think, in fact, that I said quite the opposite. Jesus himself gave the grounds for divorce (the only grounds acceptable to me, btw). i am in no way defending divorce. Just stating, that scripturally, there are grounds for it and that when discussing such painful and emotionally stressful subjects (at least with someone that is currently suffering them) we should guide in gentleness and love. While guiding and advising forgiveness and love we should also recognize that Jesus himself gave a reason for justified divorce and respect any persons authority in that circumstance to choose that option. I do feel that it should be a last resort when the one committing the adultery refuses to change their behavior. How can there be forgiveness without repentance? Even God requires that we repent so we can be forgiven. |

17 | Isn't adultrey grounds for divorce? | Hosea | Aristarchus | 58296
I agree completely, Teragram. Divorce is all too often done for the wrong reasons. As I replied to Justme, divorce should always be a last option, only in the case of adultery (and spousal abuse??), and that step should only be taken if the one committing the adultery is unwilling to repent and seek forgiveness. In that case I feel divorce is warranted, because (and I speak as one who has been there) it can adversely affect the faithful persons walk with Christ. Even God requires of us to repent if we are to be forgiven. I say again, though, that all effort should be made to bring a marriage back together. This is why I urge both parties to have a view toward ministering to each other. By selfless love and mutual respect, our goal should be to make our partner feel secure and worthy instead of wondering how they can make us feel that way. If we keep this attitude and maintain our hope in Christ, that He is where our true security and worth lies, the cheating problem would become almost insignificant. God Bless |

18 | what does water refer to? | John 3:5 | Aristarchus | 57439
I believe the water is Jesus himself. I say this because of the story of the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4. Jesus said He would give water that "will become a well of water springing up to eternal life." What water has been given that wells up into eternal life? Jesus himself, for how else is salvation attained but through the death, burial, and ressurection of Christ? "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live but Christ lives in me" (NIV). It is only through Jesus that we can be born again. It is his sacrifice that cleanses us and justifies us before the Father. I believe the "born of Spirit" is the rebirth of our spirit at the moment we truly believe in Jesus and what he did for us. 2 Cor 5:17 says that "anyone who is in Christ is a new creation, the old has gone and the new has come" (NIV). Obviously our physical bodies don't become new, so it must mean the rebirth of our spirit, which is new because we are now filled by the Holy Spirit. Of course, Jesus is also referred to as the Word in John 1:1. Either way, the only way is through Jesus, whatever analogies may be used. |

19 | Asking for gifts of the Spirit? | 1 Corinthians | Aristarchus | 49602
New Creature, Thank you for that enlightening verse comparison. I believe in tongues and use them. 1 Cor 14:22 has always baffled me a little. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks!! |

20 | Asking for gifts of the Spirit? | 1 Corinthians | Aristarchus | 49603
Quote from MrsBinGA,"Also, in one of your other posts of May 25, you stated that the gifts of tongues was the least of the gifts. How do you justify that statement? Even if it is the least of the gifts, how ungrateful a child I would be to refuse it on that basis. I truly don't understand why God's kids don't want all - great or least - He has for them." Just to add to that a little.... Does it matter if it is the least? A quick comparison from the physical realm - A one dollar bill is less than a one thousand dollar bill, right? It is less but it is much easier to come by, and i am sure every American and probably a quite a few people that aren't from the U.S. can dig up at least a couple one dollar bills. I bet there are not as many that can produce a 1,000 dollar bill though. This is my view on why tongues are the most common "gift" available to believers. In everything in life the least of something is most accessible. |
