1 | do you have to be baptized? | Acts 4:12 | sheep | 54561 | ||
Something that many people quote that says you must be baptized is John 3:5 (must be born again of water and Spirit). Most translations have "the Spirit" there, but the greek doesn't contain the word "the", so it wrote it that way to show that the text shows two things joined together (born of water and Spirit) as opposed to two seperate births. This, many people as well as myself, believe refers to baptism. So, it says that one must be born again and baptised to get to heaven. However, I would also like to point out the Thief on the Cross issue. He went to heaven without baptism. But he was hanging on a cross breathing his last hours of air, and it simply wasn't possible to be baptised at that time. So, some groups say that if you can't be baptised, you will still go to heaven. I would also like to point out that the Bible says that we are saved by faith, and that lack of baptism doesn't condemn(Mark 16:16), but this does not mean we should flat out ignore it and say to God "I do not need baptism", specially since he commands it, and since several verses indicate that it washes away sins(like Acts 2:38 and 22:16) . So... here's what I think. I think that those two statements above seem contradictory, but i think that God wants us baptized cuz he asks us to be, and not to reject it, but if we do not get baptised somehow, that we will be saved. So, I would urge your friend to be baptised. Hope you don't get confused and frustrated anymore -Sheepy |
