That was the weakness in this lesson for me. I watched a lady use a story of the manger. But it was done quickly and I didn't quite catch it. The cool thing about this lesson was the focus on the fulfillment of nine different prophecies for Jesus Christ... There are many more but the ones she used are as follows Micah 5:2 fulfilled in Matthew 2:1 Isaiah 7:14 fulfilled in Matthew 1:18 Zechariah 9:9 fullfilled in John 12:14 Psalms 41:9 fullfilled in Mark 14:10 Isaiah 53:3 fullfilled in John 1:11 (and other places) Isaiha 53:12 .....Matthew 27:38 Psalm 22:16......John 20:27 Psalm 16:10......Acts 3:15 Psalm 68:18......Acts 1:9 The nails were used to involve the students who would read the scriptures and hang a nail on a Christmas tree. I wasn't sure if there was a Christian story or otherwise that some of you may have known about. So I asked. But I assure you my teachings in church are Biblical. The thrust of our lesson...If someone asks.."What is Christmas?" You can tell them, it's true. Then support your answer with scriptures that offer promises and and keep promises from God. Amen, thanks and God bless you. |

3 | is selling in a church building fine? | John 2:13 | roark89 | 59648 | ||
I agree with your position on everything you describe. I too saw the picture thing in a Methodist church I formally attended. In fact the hocking of goods and the constant asking of money became bothersome. I guess it depends on the spirit in which its done. Because I was turned off by the concept of "Church" for about a year because of it. Fortunately me and my family are excitedly involved in a church that strives to worship and please God. In Acts it was Peter and if the church is the body and the body is made up of people, then isn't the sell off of personal goods really being done by the church. Peter and the Apostles just become the administrators of the funds? |

I can't really disagree with you on your point of view. I wasn't referring to those who hit the road to hock the CD for profit in the churches. I really refer to those who bring their wares with them, offering them in the foyer or side area, not during service but something available after the fact. In terms of donations we see in Acts where Peter is accepting the gifts of those who sold their things and brought them to the apostles. While we may not call this a rummage sale as we see it today. It still seems to amount to the same thing. Of course the real point was the fate of Anninias and his wife who held something back from the Lord. With those donations given to the early church, could we not attribute that to the Lord providing through the people who sold their things to others and gave the money to the Apostles? Just food for thought. I agree with the sentiment of keeping it out of the church, but I struggle to rebuke Christians who hold fundraisers to support a bible study ministry or mission project for the Youth..etc. |

Remember a lot of the ministry that is done is funded by the things that are sold. People who choose to buy them do so to allow the ministry (music, video or book)to continue. In the people I've seen, it's not just a preacher or choir trying to hock something but an avenue that allows them to continue sharing their gifts and inspirational word of God. You can look at it two ways. 1: God gave them a gift, a way to spread His word and a venue (CD, video etc) to fund the ministry. 2)Discernment may tell you this person is not annointed and he or she is in it to make a buck. In that case Jesus will someday overturn the tables of the moneychangers once again. As for Auctions or other events. God gave us the brains and critical thinking skills that allow us to raise funds. If we don't use them when they are placed before us, we may be foolish. We want to have faith but not blind faith. Remember God empowers us. Not all good things from God are Supernatural, spur of the moment donations and miracles. Some of his miracles appear in the everday empowerment of faithful human beings who are courageous enough to act in His will. If we see that an auction may raise money for the church while allowing someone to purchase something at a lesser price that they can afford...is that not God creating a victory for Himself in all things? If someone who is wealthy pays in excess for an item at an Auction that goes to the church to spread his Word, is that not too evidence of God creating something Good. We live in a free society where capitalism is the system. Render unto Caesar what is his...but should the church sit by, not trying to do His will because they're waiting for a miracle? Kind of like the flood victim who died faithful that God would save him. When He gets to heaven, he doesn't understand why he drowned. God said..I sent you a jeep a boat and a helicopter. The man refused all three, trusting God would deliver him from the flood. I agree that begging for the youth is not the answer. Teach them a work ethic, sacrifice and a little sweat. Anything worth getting should involve some type of sacrifice, time, money, effort) panhandling for youth camp is lazy, not service to God. |
