1 | What does "world" mean? | John 17:11 | mhmcintyre | 2980 | ||
In all three of the verses in the question, the Greek word kosmos is used. The root meaning of this word is that of order as opposed to chaos. From this word we get our English words cosmetics, cosmos and cosmic. Kosmos has a variety of meanings in the NT and John uses it in several ways. You need to study the context to determine which particular meaning is intended. In 3:16, kosmos refers to mankind in general. In other words, John is saying the Christ dies for all men. In the other two verses (John 15:19 and 17:11ff), kosmos refers to the world system that is in opposition to God. -Mark McIntyre |
