1 | Are we all descendants of Adam and Eve? | Genesis | katrjohnson | 85290
Hello "Mark", I'm afraid much of what you have written went right over my head. Due to illness, age and medications, my comprhension level is somewhat lacking. When I read the Bible, unless passages are obviously, metaphors, hyperbole, parables, etc, I tend to take them literally. I love to discuss the Bible and am not trying to argue. (Though quite frequently my family tells me my discussions sound like aruements to them. On other matters, I have no one with whom I can really discuss the Bible.) I just don't understand what you mean when you say the meaning is true, but not to be taken literally. Now I do understand Paul speaking in a metaphor. I just accept the creation story as being literal. But whether it is or not is not relevant. as long as you say, the meaning is understood. Which is the fall of man and the need for a savior. Thank God, one was provided in Jesus. God bless, Kat |

2 | Are we all descendants of Adam and Eve? | Genesis | katrjohnson | 85150
The Apostle Paul seemed to take the opening chapters of Genesis literally. In 1 Timothy 2:13,14 he states, "13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner." In 1 Corinthians 15:45-49 He says, "45So it is written: 'The first man Adam became a living being'; the last Adam, a lifegiving spirit. 46The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47The first man was of the dust of the earth, the second man from heaven. 48As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the man from heaven, so also are those who are of heaven. 49And just as we have borne the likeness of the earthly man, so shall we bear the likeness of the man from heaven." And in Romans 5:12-17, "12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned-- 13for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. 14Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come. 15But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ." I don't understand how you can say the opening chapters of Genesis "contain a mythic language" after what Paul had to say on the subject. Besides, I can't believe God would begin the Bible with a myth. |

That certainly doesn't seem to be what the Apostle Paul thought. 17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ." It seems clear to me that Paul considered Adam one man and not a group of people. |

4 | Who did Cain marry to have children? | Genesis | katrjohnson | 85148
Genesis 4:16 states, "So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden." Remember that Genesis was written many years after these events took place. In Genesis 4:14 Cain tells the Lord, "Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me." According to the NIV, Nod means wandering. So it could very well be that the land that Cain went to did not recieve the name Nod until after he settled there, but because Genesis was written so much later, Moses called the land by the name that it was known by in his time.
5 | Who did Cain marry to have children? | Genesis | katrjohnson | 85147
My belief on the subject is that Adam and Eve were individuals who were perfect. Their DNA did not contain any adnormalities. Nor did the DNA of their children, but as the years went by, adnormalities in the DNA crept in, and thus by the time of Moses these adnormalities began to result in children with deformities, if the parents were closely related, just as it will do in our day. So in the time of Adam and Eve's children there was no reason for a law against incest.
