In response I would like to point out that you haven't stated your background and experience in translation to indicate that you have the knowledge to say I'm wrong. I don't have a background in translation but I do know how to use reference materials from those who do have a background. Included is an excerpt from Strong's concordance: owm, yome; from an unused root meaning to be hot; a day (as the warm hours), whether literal (from sunrise to sunset, or from one sunset to the next), or figurative (a space of time defined by an associated term), [often used adverbially] :- age, always, chronicles, continually (-ance), daily, ([birth-], each, to) day, (now a, two) days (agone), elder, × end, evening, (for) ever (-lasting, -more), × full, life, as (so) long as (...live), (even) now, old, outlived, perpetually, presently, remaineth, × required, season, × since, space, then, (process of) time, as at other times, in trouble, weather, (as) when, (a, the, within a) while (that), whole ( age), (full) year (-ly), younger. As you can see the word can mean a space of time defined by an associated term such as the "day" God created the animals. I'm not saying that the "gap theory" is correct, only that the original may not necessarily refute it. I do know that God did create the universe and if I was convinced that the Bible clearly refuted the theory then I would certainly reject the theory. My concern is to correctly interpret what the Bible is really saying, and therefore I have an open mind concerning the theory. Further, if you would go back and read carefully what I wrote, you will find that I never claimed any expertise and stated plainly that it was only my opinion. I admit I didn't back up what I said with evidence, but I am new to the forum and I will learn. I have now corrected that oversight. One final point, I think it is important to discuss even controversial subjects in the right spirit. If you can show me that the creation account can be excepted literally as it is translated and it was indeed in 24-hour periods, then I will listen. Sarcasm is NOT necessary and it was NOT appreciated. Gary |
