1 | Is common law marriage acceptable | Heb 13:4 | always searching the Word | 226802
Hello Bradk-thanks again for your input-I am also a believer and believe as you do, BUT what I am trying to find out is what GOD says marriage is not what is considered "legal" by man. When a Christian gets married that marriage is "legal" in man's eyes by a piece of paper, but that marriage is acceptable (not legal) in GOD's eyes not by that piece of paper, but by the Christian couples committment to each other before GOD. Unbelievers and unfortunately Christians get divorced by a "legal" piece of paper, but does GOD see divorce that way? Can a Christian justify divorce in GOD's eyes by going through a "legal" proceeding and getting a "legal"piece of paper? I think not. In my state Idaho, common law marriage is no longer recognized since 1996, per my discussion with the Legislative Library personnel, but those prior to that are grandfatherd in and decided in a case by case court of law in deciding property settlement, etc. Maybe there is no definitive answer, but this discussion will help in our quest for the truth. Hey BradK-thanks for your input. I agree with your reply and I believe that marriage is between one man and one woman. the argument is what is "marriage" in God's eyes? How were people "married" in the old testament and the new testament. Not just the Jewish customs but also greek, etc. What if common law is legal where one lives.
