Thanks everyone. Its late, and it looks like I have alot to read. It looks like I will be investigating other possible sources of scriptures, but not quite yet. I want to investigate where the idea of a closed cannon arose, as that might be at the crux of the issue. Is that doctrine Biblical? I will see if it is. Thanks all for your help and good night. Everyone, Wow, so many thoughtful replies. I was at work typing before and am now home. I tried to fill in my beliefs on the profile as someone said, but it is pretty short. I will try to flesh it out after reading some others. I appreciate everyones insights. It seems the general consensus is to stick with the Bible and live with the fact that I can't seem to resolve all the questions. Since everyone seems more experienced than I it is probably wise for me to take the advice. But, BradK talks about the cannon. I guess than I would ask, who decided the cannon was the Bible. There are books those in the Bible quote from, surely those books must be scriptures. Or else why would they quote from them? If I could get access to those books, wouldn't they be scripture? Maybe I can't, but the fact that we don't have them would show me the Bible is not all God ever said or that was ever recorded. Its possible it is all He wants to give us right now. And BradK, yes I believe 3 Tim 3:16. But that scripture just tells me that all scripture is good, not that we have all scripture. Thanks everyone for helping with this. Ted546 |

Tim, Thanks. The reason I think the Bible is not clear, is simply from watching too many really smart people who have studied all their lives disagree. If it was clear, that would not happen. I do not see many people arguing over whether or not Jesus is the Son of God. That's clear, we all agree. Agreement is a good evidence of clarity. The more disagreement the less clarity. Which makes me wonder about more information - just like if I was studying math and did not understand I would grab another text book. I am searching for more textbooks. And I am posting too much :) ! |

Steve, That's disappointing to hear about the Apocrypha. And maybe you are right I may not get my questions answered. But, it dampens my faith to know that so many basic questions do not have good answers. But, we will have to respectfully disagree about the meaning of 2 Pet. I just cannot see that as a reference to the Bible. I don't think any scriptures in the Bible can be referencing the Bible (they certainly can be referencing scripture, which the Bible is). I am open to the possibility that some of the apocrapha is actually scripture, with more to teach me. Steve, have you read the Church Fathers? Are they helpful? Ted546 |

Steve, Thanks for replying. I am having a little difficulty knowing what those scriptures have to do with what I said. 2 Pet 1:3 does not limit my search to find the "everything" to the Bible. Peter was writing to people who certainly did not have a Bible, so he could not have possibly meant that the Bible was complete. He may have meant that the Apostles had everything? I want to learn all God has for me, and if I can glean more out of some things that were once considered scripture, I am going to try. I love the Bible as God's word, but too many questions are unanswered. Do you speak from experience about the Apocrypha? If so that dampens my hope of ever having a clear knowledge of what God's doctrine is. That's a little sad for me. Ted546 |

Thanks BradK. I think Spurgeon is very insightful. But my question is now a little different. I do not think the answer is in the Bible. If it was we would know. But I have hope that clues to this and other problems might lie elsewhere in other things that were once considered scripture. So, I was really wondering if anyone had opinions of these other books. | ||||||
