1 | Praying for the 'World'. | Matt 5:44 | Sonlit | 163879
Thank you, atdcross, for your comments. I found what your wrote, "The Bible is read to seek God and deepening relationship with him, not doctrines" especially helpful. That is exactly what I want, a deeper relationship with God. I remember seeing my parents use the "Thompson Chain Reference" Bible, and I also use the New American Standard. I will definitely plan on purchasing for myself the Thompson Chain Reference Bible. Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.

Thank you, Tim, this does help. Again, though, I think I'm becoming paranoid in the thought that I may be misquoting, taking something out of context, and reading into something that isn't there. I guess I've relied on other Saints for answers because I am so unsure of myself. Even when I feel I have studied a portion of Scripture and that the Holy Spirit has revealed truth to me, there have been many times when I am told that I misunderstood what is really being said. Makes me long for His return....sometimes Heaven looks so good! I do get weary!

Thank you for your response. I do so appreciate your taking the time to share. Like I said in an earlier post, I feel so very insignificant, even reading the different responses to my question, because my theological knowledge is limited, at best. I was content to accept the viewpoint of the learned, the Biblical scholar, bacause I was of the conviction that if they are being taught by the Holy Spirit, than who am I to question. But, the more I read, the more I find there are different viewpoints, different intrepretations that seem to contradict each other. You said "To change the meaning or interpret "any" to refer to "The chosen" is totally unwarranted in the text". John Macarthur has been my resource in regard to my question. He wrote, "The 'any' must refer to those whom the Lord has chosen and will call to complete the redeemed, i.e., the 'us'. Since the whole passage is about God's destroying the wicked, his patience is not so He can save all of them, but so that He can receive all His own. He can't be waiting for everyone to be saved, since the emphasis is that He will destroy the world and the ungodly. Those wo do perish and go to hell, go because they are depraved and worthy only of hell and have rejected the only remedy, Jesus Christ, not because they were created for hell and predetermined to go there. The path to damnation is the path of a non-repentant heart; it is the path of one who rejects the person and provision of Jesus Christ and holds on to sin. Even in this one paragraph I realize that John Macarthur is contradicting some of what I have read from John Piper. Do you see my dilema? I want to know the truth...how can I be sure what intrepretation is the right one. How can I be sure what I feel the Holy Spirit is teaching me is correct? Ever seeking, Sonlit |

Thank you so very much for your wisdom and your willingness to give of your time to share it with us. It's funny, I have been wanting and wishing I could somehow find a site on the web where I could get some sound, theological answers. Doesn't it say somewhere in the Bible that we should seek the counsel of many? I just happen to goggle something like "Biblical answers" and found this forum and I am thrilled and thank the Lord for directing me to this site. I am keeping copies of the input given to me by everyone who has responded in a notebook so that I can refer to them over and over while meditating over the truths, and spend time checking out the Bible references that have been included. What a help this has been, and I am so grateful. Thank you.

It's amazing, MJH, how much your circumstance resembles mine. At first I found different ways of thinking and teaching troubling. I realized I was very comfortable believing what I believed (after all, it was good enough for my mother and my father)and didn't want to be challenged, come out of my comfort zone, as it were. But the more I am challenged, as you so wisely stated, the stronger my faith has become. It has and is still quite a roller coaster ride....and I am convinced will continue to be until I meet Him face to face!

Thank you Tim, actually, I did wonder where the intrepretation of the verse God is not willing that any should perish came from, but I find it hard to disagree with a scholar of the Word. I believe I read this in John McArthur's study notes, somehow that seems to hold so much more weight than my feeble opinion. I am really searching for truth and have come up against some doctrinal teaching that has literally brought me to tears. I never really knew before that God created people purposefully for hell. I recently had to teach this to the children at our church, and it just happened to be the Sunday before we burried my mother-in-law. There was no indication in her life that she made a profession of faith and I couldn't grasp the concept that God made her for hell. There are so many more unanswered, soul-tearing concepts confronting me. And yet....and yet, I am CONVINCED that God is all loving, sovereign, good, and trustworthy. I rest in this. |

Yes, thank you, this does help. I hold great respect for Charles Spurgeon, and this response finds a resting place in my soul. And...I am thankful that God is leading and teaching me through His Word and through His saints who are willing to come along side another with words of wisdom, so thank you. My mother, who is now at home with her Lord, once told me, "God will shake that which is shakeable, and that which is his will remain". I was reminded of that after you comment. |
