1 | Was Mary from the line of David? | Luke 3:23 | Songbirdca | 173214
Thank you! I thought they were both from the same line but the geneology's were confusing me.
2 | Was the temple curtain repaired? | Heb 9:1 | Songbirdca | 152505
What difference does it make? Since when has this become a forum for bashing others about the way they respond to things? I'm shocked and appalled at the way I'm being treated by my so-called "brothers" in Christ. BTW, this is a comment - it does NOT require scripture because I'm voicing my concern. Okay? |

3 | Was the temple curtain repaired? | Heb 9:1 | Songbirdca | 152401
I'm not really sure why you are picking on me like this, but when I make a comment I don't usually include scripture. When I answer a question I try to always include scripture. I'm not sure where you got your numbers from, because according to my statistics I've only answered 13 questions and 8 out of those answers included scripture references. |

4 | So she should only be eating fruit? | Gen 2:16 | Songbirdca | 152382
Terrib, I agree with you. But how can a perfect world (Eden) have included meat-eating? It seems wrong somehow.
5 | If all sacrafices ended, then why Acts 2 | Heb 9:1 | Songbirdca | 152381
Lionheart I realize the sacrifices were no longer necessary. I was simply trying to point out that they did not cease immediately upon Jesus death.
6 | Was the temple curtain repaired? | Heb 9:1 | Songbirdca | 152380
Who are you talking to? Because I use scripture all the time.
7 | Was the temple curtain repaired? | Heb 9:1 | Songbirdca | 152379
Doc, since I never "assumed" anything about you, please don't assume such about me. I never claimed any of the things you have stated. I was simply trying to point something out.
8 | Was the temple curtain repaired? | Heb 9:1 | Songbirdca | 152301
Doc, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree! :) I believe the OT (the Torah, which Jesus cited many times during his time on earth) is just as relevant today. It makes no difference if these events happened centuries before Jesus. They are in the Bible to teach of something about God. Namely, His holiness. |

9 | If all sacrafices ended, then why Acts 2 | Heb 9:1 | Songbirdca | 152278
Merv you are forgetting the fact that the sacrifices did not end with Jesus for the temple practices still went on as usual. Not until the destruction of the temple did the sacrifices end.
10 | Was the temple curtain repaired? | Heb 9:1 | Songbirdca | 152276
Doc, I would have to disagree with you on that one. The ark of the covenant would cause a person to be cursed by God if they touched it, some even died! Check out 1 Samuel chapters 3 and 4 on what happened to the Philistines when they took the ark in battle. In particular notice what Phineas's wife says in 1 Samuel 3 vs. 21 and 22 about the glory departing Israel. Also, check out 2 Samuel 6 vs. 6 and 7, where someone actually died from touching the ark (even though God's glory had departed it).
11 | Who were Mary's sisters? | John 19:25 | Songbirdca | 145345
Did you notice that the same verse John 19:25 is used to show that both Mary the wife of Clopas and Salome were the Virgin Mary's sisters?
12 | Who were Mary's sisters? | John 19:25 | Songbirdca | 139567
Emmaus I thought so too, but the confusion lies with Mark 15:40 which reads: "There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome". Now if you compare that verse with John 19:25, wouldn't Mary's sister be Salome?
13 | replacement theoplogy is incorrect? | Rom 11:25 | Songbirdca | 139388
Thanks. I didn't realize there was such an absurd doctrine out there. I would have to say that anyone who believes in replacement theology has been greatly deceived indeed.
14 | Who was Joseph's father? | Luke 3:23 | Songbirdca | 139387

15 | speaking in tongues 1cor.12:1coming | 1 Cor 12:13 | Songbirdca | 125350
Prayon, I guess we will agree to disagree! As for your question - you must be born-again to speak in tongues. Just as you must be born-again to receive any of the spiritual gifts. Which is why I firmly believe that the baptism in the Holy Spirit happens when we first believe. |

16 | speaking in tongues 1cor.12:1coming | 1 Cor 12:13 | Songbirdca | 125310
Prayon, 1 Corinthian 12:1 says that believers should not be ignornant of spiritual gifts. It is therefore, good that we are discussing this. Obviously we are of differing opinions. Let me share with you why I believe the way I do about tongues. Taking our guidance from the Word of God I direct you to 1 Corinthians 12. The topic of this chapter is spiritual gifts. Paul's desire is made known in verse two, where he states that he doesn't want us to be led astray. That is good because we want to understand clearly. Read this chapter carefully and you will see that there are a variety of gifts but the same Spirit. (vs. 4) As you read you will notice in verse seven it says, "To each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit". Why is it given? As the rest of the verse says, for the common good. Reading down to verse 11, you will see that many different manifestations of the Spirit are given to believers. Among these manifestations is the gift of tongues. Notice that verse 11 says, that the one and the same Spirit distributes all these things to each one as HE WILLS IT. So who is giving the gifts? God does. Who receives the gifts? All believers (7). Are all believers given the same gifts? NO. Look at verses 28-30 and you will see that in order for the body of Christ to grow we all cannot have the same gift. It would not benefit us as a church body. Are some gifts better than others? No. Clearly this chapter points that out. We are all valuable to the body of Christ. As to the example you have given you must keep it in context. First of all you will remember that this chapter involved Simon the Magician. All the people were following him because of the signs and wonders he was performing, until Philip came and did signs and wonders in Jesus name. When the people saw what Philip could do, in Jesus name, they quickly changed sides. The people were only baptized in the name of Jesus. Notice the word ONLY. They had not yet repented of their sins as is clear when Simon later tries to buy the gift of the Holy Spirit from Peter and John (18-23). Yes, tongues is an evidence of the Holy Spirit's dwelling, but so is prophecy, teaching, interpretation of tongues, etc. these are all gifts of the Holy Spirit manifested in us as a sign from God that He is with us, again I point you to 1 Cor. 12. All these gifts are given to us for God's glory and to build up and unite the body of Christ. Can we ask for gifts? No. For again scripture clearly states that the Holy Spirit gives the gifts as He wills it. 1 Cor.12:11. We must also try to remember that tongues are a sign for unbelievers. (1 cor. 14:22) As evidenced by the many who heard the Apostles speak in their own languages on Pentecost and many were saved. Tongues was obviously a gift needed to reach the masses. Today the gift of tongues has unfortunately been elevated by some Christians as THE gift. That only people with the gift of tongues are saved. As Scripture clearly points out, that is simply not true. Which is why Paul wrote to the Corinthians in the first place, because people back then were also trying to make tongues more important than any of the other gifts. For someone to say that the Holy Spirit only gives the manifestation of tongues at our rebirth, would be a contradiction of scripture. Blessings, Songbirdca |

17 | Explain spiritual gifts ? ? | 1 Corinthians | Songbirdca | 99635
The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts to people who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I did not know that spiritual gifts were given when I first became a Christian, through bible study I learned all that our wonderful Lord bestows on us at the time of our rebirth. So yes, we get them even if we don't know about them. It is up to the Holy Spirit to direct us about them and to use them.
18 | Explain spiritual gifts ? ? | 1 Corinthians | Songbirdca | 99547
DL5 I think you are not understanding what I'm saying. Our original disagreement had to do with whether or not Spiritual Gifts could be earned. I think I have made it clear that they cannot be. You can't "get" more than what the Holy Spirit bestowed on you at the time of your conversion. If we all had the same gifts there would be no balance in the church body.

20 | Explain spiritual gifts ? ? | 1 Corinthians | Songbirdca | 99514
DL5 You refer to 1 Cor. ch. 13 - the love chapter. Clearly it infers that the greatest gift is love. That all the gifts we have been given by God will pass away, but love never fails. Ch. 14 goes on to tell us that Paul would rather have the Corinthians seek the gift of prophecy rather than tongues, because tongues does nothing to build up the body of Christ unless an interpreter is present. Vs 31 of 1 cor. 12 and vs. 1 of 1 Cor. 14 use the word "desire". "Desire" in the greek is zeloo a plural verb commanding the whole church, not just individuals within the Corinthian church. It can mean affect, desire, envy, jealous, zealous; to have a warm feeling... This is not telling individual believers to desire certain gifts, because God the Spirit gives the gifts as He wills. This is telling the Corinthian church to desire that the greater gifts are within their body. The same is true for today. "The greater gifts" within this context most likely are the ones listed first in the order of verse 28 of 1 cor. 12. Apostles, prophets, and teachers all have to do with giving out the Word of God which is the basis by which the body of believers live. Some scholars think that verse 31 is in the indicative mood instead of the imperative and translate it as saying, "You are earnestly desiring the greater gifts." They think that this means that the Corinthian church desired the gifts of tongues, chapter 14, more than any other. Then the last part of the verse is a contrast with that desire of tongues for everyone in the body ... "but I show you a still more excellent way." Either way, the interpretation of this verse has to come from its context. It is not telling individual believers that they should be seeking for God to give them a greater gift than what He has. This is to a whole body of believers, and it does not contradict verses 11, 18, 24 or 28. Keep in mind 1 Cor. 12:1-2 Paul was talking to a group of new believers who were pagans. They used to worship idols and followed after every new teaching. He was trying to impress the truth upon them. He did not want them to be led astray. He did not want them to think that some gifts were better then others. They all thought tongues was better, but Paul was clear that no gift is better than another, for all were for the building up of the body of Christ. He used as his example the gift of prophecy. The gift of prophecy was not about telling the future (as most people think it is today) but it was for the edification, exhortation and consolation of the body of Christ. It was a forthtelling gift used to edify the church. It seems from 1 Cor. 13:2 that a supernatural ability to comprehend the overall picture of the Word is part of the gift of prophecy. You referred to James 1:5 I'm not sure why you reference it as it talks about asking God for wisdom not a spiritual gift. In other words if you have a question to ask God - go ahead and ask it. As for Rom. 1:11 again read the surrounding text. Paul talked about his gifts and how he longed to come and impart a spiritual gift to them. Spiritual in the greek is translated pneumatiko meaning one who is filled with and governed by the Spirit of God. Gift in the greek is translated Charisma meaning in this context the gift of faith , knowledge, holiness or virture. So what Paul is going to do is use his speaking gift of prophecy to impart wisdom or knowledge to the Corinthians. |
