1 | Please help me to understand these verse | 2 Thess 2:13 | Mickodemus | 91893
Brother Tim, I know I keep coming back to this subject, but it keeps going back and forth in my mind. I still can't see how you cannot see the election of Christ in Scriptures as to HIS inividuals (we Christians/sheep/elect). Spurgeon quoted in "A Defense of Calvinism" (www.spurgeonministries.com/Resource_page.htm): "I can recall the very day and hour when first I received those truths in my own soul—when they were, as John Bunyan says, burnt into my heart as with a hot iron, and I can recollect how I felt that I had grown on a sudden from a babe into a man—that I had made progress in Scriptural knowledge, through having found, once for all, the clue to the truth of God. One week-night, when I was sitting in the house of God, I was not thinking much about the preacher's sermon, for I did not believe it. The thought struck me, How did you come to be a Christian? I sought the Lord. But how did you come to seek the Lord? The truth flashed across my mind in a moment—I should not have sought Him unless there had been some previous influence in my mind to make me seek Him. I prayed, thought I, but then I asked myself, How came I to pray? I was induced to pray by reading the Scriptures. How came I to read the Scriptures? I did read them, but what led me to do so? Then, in a moment, I saw that God was at the bottom of it all, and that He was the Author of my faith, and so the whole doctrine of grace opened up to me, and from that doctrine I have not departed to this day, and I desire to make this my constant confession, "I ascribe my change wholly to God."...... "I recollect an Arminian brother telling me that he had read the Scriptures through a score or more times, and could never find the doctrine of election in them. He added that he was sure he would have done so if it had been there, for he read the Word on his knees. I said to him, "I think you read the Bible in a very uncomfortable posture, and if you had read it in your easy chair, you would have been more likely to understand it. Pray, by all means, and the more, the better, but it is a piece of superstition to think there is anything in the posture in which a man puts himself for reading: and as to reading through the Bible twenty times without having found anything about the doctrine of election, the wonder is that you found anything at all: you must have galloped through it at such a rate that you were not likely to have any intelligible idea of the meaning of the Scriptures." I would add more but it would be to lengthy. Please read it for yourself at the site listed above. It's very enlightening. This is why I jumped back to this subject! While reading this document from Spurgeon it reminded me so much of you and the arguments we have on Election/Predestination. I just had to bring it up again!! ") Sola Scriptura Mike |

N.C. You better read your sermons over alot more. Or you might be getting your info from sources who are misleading also. ;) As Jibbs quoted in his response to your answer, "Spurgeon is not preaching against once saved-always saved but is preaching for it." If I may quote some lines from Spurgeons sermon, "Final Perseverance": "...God preserves his children from falling away; but he keeps them by the use of means; and one of these is, the terrors of the law, showing them what would happen if they were to fall away...So God says, "My child, if you fall over this precipice you will be dashed to pieces." What does the child do? He says, "Father, keep me; hold thou me up, and I shall be safe." It leads the believer to greater dependence on God, to a holy fear and caution, because he knows that if he were to fall away he could not be renewed, and he stands far away from that great gulf, because he know that if he were to fall into it there would be no salvation for him.If I thought as the Arminian thinks, that I might fall away, and then return again, I should pretty often fall away, for sinful flesh and blood would think it very nice to fall away, and be a sinner, and go and see the play at the theatre, or get drunk, and then come back to the Church, and be received again as a dear brother who had fallen away for a little while. No doubt the minister would say, "Our brother Charles is a little unstable at times." A little unstable! He does not know anything about grace; for grace engenders a holy caution, because we feel that if we were not preserved by Divine power we should perish. We tell our friend to put oil in his lamp, that it may continue to burn! Does that imply that it will be allowed to go out? No, God will give him oil to pour into the lamp continually." Spurgeon also eludes to John Bunyans,"Pilgrims Progress." Which is a great read! I would put more of this sermon in but you can read it for yourself at www.spurgeon.org/sermons/0075.htm You might want to read more Spurgeon to gain some insight on other subjects as well. ;) Thanks again Brother Jibbs, you are a very knowledgable brother and I thank God for your input! I'm sorry N.C but the scriptures you have presented do not say that a person was born-again or filled with the Spirit. The Hebrew passage you stated says that some people have been enlightened by the Holy Spirit and partook of it but never actually received the Holy Spirit within them.(born-again) A good example of this is Judas Iscariot. When Jesus sent them out two by two, they all did miracles and many wonders, even Judas because he was a "partaker of the Holy Spirit" but never really was born-again. The Spirit worked through Judas but never set up camp there. :) There are many examples of the Spirit moving in people but never having the adoption of God within. John 15:6 is talking about the ungodly or as Psalm 1 puts it the chaff which the wind driveth away. Once you are in the hands/adopted by God, no one can pluck you out, not even yourself.(John 10:28) How can a Father who has a child say that he never was a father. Once you are a child of God, you can't say, "No, I dont want you as my father." He has the adoption papers in hand and its on record in the courthouse. ;) Sola Scriptura Mike |

4 | Quick responding note of election | John 3:16 | Mickodemus | 89972
Brother Tim, Just a quick note and I will get off the subject for now, until someone else brings it up. (which probably wont be long ;) You still say that we assume what the scripture says, but, when you read Roman 8 and 9 you can plainly see that elect means one predestined by God before time began, and if you are written in the Lambs book of life you were there before you were born. God started that Spirit of Salvation within you and The Holy Spirit makes us His sons and testifying so. Rom 8:14-20 (CEV)reads: "Only those people who are led by God's Spirit are his children. God's Spirit doesn't make us slaves who are afraid of him. Instead, we become his children and call him our Father. God's Spirit makes us sure that we are his children. His Spirit lets us know that together with Christ we will be given what God has promised. We will also share in the glory of Christ, because we have suffered with him. I am sure that what we are suffering now cannot compare with the glory that will be shown to us. In fact, all creation is eagerly waiting for God to show who his children are. Meanwhile, creation is confused, but not because it wants to be confused. God made it this way in the hope that creation would be set free from decay and would share in the glorious freedom of his children." You see? God made it that way to be Predestined is not a choice, you are led by the Spirit to believe and the Spirit is the one that makes you cry Abba, Father. We in our unrighteousness cannot, Only when we are washed in the Blood of Christ can we Hear and see the Truth of God's law (scriptures). Just like Nickodemus asked Christ in John, "How can a man enter back in his mothers womb to be BORN AGAIN? Baby's don't have a choice in the matter. Lazurus had no choice in comming out of the grave. It was the drawing and the re-birth of the Holy Spirit. We can do nothing, not even accept the things of the Father, unless given to us by His mercy and grace. Remember....The Potter and the Clay. 5 | why would God withhold the gift of faith | John 3:16 | Mickodemus | 89934
Brother Tim, You asked the question: Where exactly is 'spiritually dead' defined as being unable to respond? Rom 8:7-8 "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. and 1 Corinthians 2:14- But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness to him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. So can you accept the things of God (believe or have faith in spiritual things of God) while still being of this world? I don't think so Tim! :D Sola Scriptura Mike |

6 | THE CROSS | John 3:16 | Mickodemus | 89928
Dear Brother Tim, Please define for me these verses: Psalm 105:43 "Isreal is called his chosen ones." Psalm 135:4 "The Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself." Deut. 7:6 "The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth." Christ is called, "Christ mine elect." God's angels are called "elect angels." The Church in the N.T. is always referred to as "elect/chosen by God." John 15:16 "YOU HAVE NOT CHOSEN ME, I HAVE CHOSEN YOU." ACTS 13:48-"As many as had been appointed to eternal life believed." (Did this mean that some who were there were not appointed to eternal life and did not believe? hhhhmmm) Rom 9- The elective purposes of God, ie...the Potter and the clay, God chose Jacob and not Esau. Eph 1:11-12- Predestined according to the plan of God. 1st Thess 1:4- We know that God has chosen/elected you. 2nd Thess 2:13- God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation. Luke 4:24-27 only Naaman the Serian was healed of Leaprosy. (and not one Jew) At anytime you can substitute the word elect for chose, chosen, etc... the Hebrew word for chosen is bachiyr- select:--choose, chosen one, elect. The Greek word for chosen is ekloge-meaning (divine)selection (abstractly or concretely):--- chosen, election. Look it up for yourself in "Strongs Bible Dictionary." Elect not defined in Scripture? I don't think so Tim. ") Sola Scriptura, Mike |

7 | THE CROSS | John 3:16 | Mickodemus | 89919
Jibbs, What you have said here to Tim is my sentiments exactly. We have tried time and time again to show different view points of God's elect and His calling to those predestined to salvation. What alot of people don't understand is that the Father gives us the faith to believe because we can do NOTHING to gain salvation, not even have faith unless the Father reveals himself to us, because, once again, "All our works are as filthy rags." and "There is none that does good, no not one." Acts 2:37-39 "And hearing this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and to the other apostles, Men, brothers, what shall we do? Then Peter said to them, Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ to remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all those afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call." First of all, who cut their heart made of stone and put a heart of flesh within? Could God be working in their life first? And second, the promise is made to them and their children and those afar off, as many as the Lord has called. (those who have ears to hear, let them hear.) I enjoy your arguments and conversation, Jibbs. In Christ, Mike |

9 | THE CROSS | John 3:16 | Mickodemus | 89589
Ohh brother Tim you make me chuckle, you say: "The main difference between the two views is that I can actually produce Scripture which says what I believe! ;-)" We have been pointing scripture out to you again and again but in your ignorance ;) you don't see. How 'bout another verse: Acts15:7-11 ...Peter rose up and said to them, Men, brothers, you recognize that from ancient days God chose among us that through my mouth the nations should hear the Word of the gospel, and believe. Act 15:8 And God, who knows the hearts, bore them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit even as to us. Act 15:9 And He put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Act 15:10 Now therefore why do you tempt God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples, a yoke which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? Act 15:11 But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, according to which manner they also believed. Again, we see that Peter says that the nations shall "hear" the word of the Gospel first and then believe. What did Christ say before in John 5:24-25? "Truly, truly, I say to you, He who hears My Word and believes on Him who sent Me has everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation, but has passed from death to life." Or John 8:43-47 "Why do you not know My speech? Because you cannot hear My Word. You are of the Devil as father, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and did not abide in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God's Words. Therefore you do not hear them because you are not of God." WAIT A MINUTE.... NOT OF GOD???? You must have ears given you by the Father to be "One of His", or to understand/believe/have faith. Christ DID offer salvation to the Pharacees and Saducees but did they respond/have faith? No....Because they did not have ears to hear GIVEN BY THE FATHER or were not ONE OF HIS As Christ says in His prayer at the garden in John 17:9; "I pray for them; I am not praying for the world (they are not mine) but for those whom thou hast given me, because they belong to thee. *parentheses added by me Here we see that example of Christ did not die for everyone but to everyone in the world THAT WAS/IS HIS. It is impossible for people to respond to the Gospel by faith unless you are one of HIS! Because when you respond you have the Goodness/righteousness (sanctification) given you by the Father and without it we are born to die in sin as children of the Devil. "Enter by the narrow gate. The gate is wide that leads to perdition, there is plenty of room on the road, and many go that way; but the gate that leads to life is small and the road is narrow, and those who find it are few." (because only a few are led by the Shepherd) Sheep and Goats....Sheep and Goats Some made as sheep, some made as goats. In Christ, Mike |

Greetings Brothers Jibby, NE14Pool, Joseph3, nivlac5, Reformer Joe and John Reformed and all other Reformers out there. Good to see some strong foundational teachings on this site. All we can do is Keep on spreading the TRUTHS of Gods Word and pray for people to have Spiritual eyes and ears to see and Hear. God Bless, I'm starting a Bible Study in this RC area Hoping that people will want to read God's Word for what it is and not by what their Church traditions/leaders (Bishops/Priests) teeach them. I leave with you a quote from Martin Luther arguing with an Arminian that helped me to become "Renewed of my mind." (Rom 12:2) It Reads, " ... I shall here end this book, ready though I am to pursue the matter further, if need be; but I think that abundant satisfaction has here been afforded for the godly man who is willing to yield to truth without stubborn resistance. For if we believe it to be true that God foreknows and foreordains all things; that He cannot be deceived or obstructed in His foreknowledge and predestination; and that nothing happens but at His will (which reason itself is compelled to grant); then, on reason's own testimony, there can be no "free-will" in man, or angel, or in any creature. So, if we believe that Satan is the prince of this world, ever ensnaring and opposing the kingdom of Christ with all his strength, and that he does not let his prisoners go unless he is driven out by the power of the Divine Spirit, it is again apparent that there can be no "free-will". So, if we believe that original sin has ruined us to such an extent that even in the godly, who are led by the Spirit, it causes abundance of trouble by striving against good, it is clear that in a man who lacks the Spirit nothing is justify that can turn itself to good, but only to evil. Again, if the Jews, who followed after righteousness with all their powers, fell into unrighteousness instead, while the Gentiles, who followed after unrighteousness, attained to an un-hoped-for righteousness, by God's free gift, it is equally apparent from their very works and experience that man without grace can will nothing but evil. And, finally, if we believe that Christ redeemed men by His blood, we are forced to confess that all of man was lost; otherwise, we make Christ either wholly superfluous, or else the redeemer of the least valuable part of man only; which is blasphemy, and sacrilege. 12 | THE CROSS | John 3:16 | Mickodemus | 89136
I'm sorry Tim but if you take look at the references I gave you, you can surely see that you have to be regenerated to do anything of the Lord. Here is another example, and if you don't agree with this, well, thats between you and the Lord. My hands are clean!! John 10:24-30 (once again) "Then the Jews encircled Him and said to Him, How long do you make us doubt? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly. Jesus answered them, I told you and you did not believe. The works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me. But you did not believe because you are not of My sheep. As I said to you, My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give to them eternal life, and they shall never ever perish, and not anyone shall pluck them out of My hand. My Father who gave them to me is greater than all, and no one is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand. I and the Father are one!" VERSE 26-27: YOU DID NOT BELIEVE (HAVE FAITH) BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT OF MY SHEEP. MY SHEEP HEAR MY VOICE, AND I KNOW THEM, AND THEY FOLLOW ME. To be a part of the sheepfold you must have the ears to hear YOUR shepherd. You must know your masters voice. (the same way a dog knows its masters voice) and when He calls, you come runnin'. To have the ears to hear you MUST be regenerated first. Otherwise you can't hear! Beleive in Him and have Faith in Him are the same word here. The Greek is "pisteuo" meaning to believe or have faith in. So, take out the word "believe" and add "have faith." By the way... The word Trinity is not in the Bible either but you believe in that don't you? Regeneration before belief/faith is not just an assumption but a Biblical Fact. Patient Brother in Christ, Micko |

13 | THE CROSS | John 3:16 | Mickodemus | 89036
Hope you don't mind, but I would like to give a note/answer on this.... We see so many times in scripture that people cannot choose the Good things of God unless they were given to them by the Father. (Matt 11:25-27) Jesus reveals himself to us by giving us eyes to see and ears to hear (John 10:26-30) Take note of verse 26, you must be a sheep of the Lord to hear his voice. The only way to hear and follow is to be regenerated first! Look at what happened to Peter when Jesus asked, "Who do men say that I am?" (Matt 16:13-20) taking note in verse 17, "....Blessed art thou Simon Bar-jo'na: for flesh and blood did not reveal it unto thee, but my Father that is in Heaven." It is the same way with us, we have to be regenerated by the Holy Spirit first in order to have faith/trust or to claim that He is our Messiah and Lord of our life. Or when Christ says in John 15:16 "You have not chosen me, But I have chosen you." You can't choose to believe or have faith by something within you. We are all born sinners and cannot choose the things of God (have faith) unless God makes you one of His first (re- generation) Probably the best verses to exemplify regeneration before faith are found in Rom 3:11 "there is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God." Rom 3:12 "They are all gone out of the way, they have together become unprofitable, there is none that does good, no, not one." Rom 3:23 "For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God. So, the ones who do the good things of God were given to them by the Holy Spirit first. Because, remember, "Our works are as filthy rags" (Isa 64:6) We can do nothing if it were not given to us by the Father first. Rom 8:8-9: So then they who are in the flesh cannot please God. Rom 8:9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. You cannot believe or be one of His unless you have been regenerated first. Rom 9:11 "for the children had not yet been born, neither had done any good or evil; but that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who called,.." God has to call in order to beleive. Rom 9:16 So then it is not of the one willing, nor of the one running, but of God, the One showing mercy. This reminds me of Rev 3:20, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him and he with Me." Does everyone hear the knock? Apperently not. Only His sheep/elect hears and opens the door. Rom 10:17 "Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Again we have ears to hear only if given by the Father to hear. Matt 13:10-16 And the disciples said to Him, Why do You speak to them in parables? He answered and said to them, Because it is given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them. For whoever has, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance. But whoever does not have, from him shall be taken away even that which he has. Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not; nor do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which said, "By hearing you shall hear and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see and shall not perceive; for this people's heart has become gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and they have closed their eyes, lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them." But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. (mkjv) My favorite verses are found in Eph 2:8-10 They read: "For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them." Note, Not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.....the faith is given to you by the Holy Spirit. Please pray about this and keep searching the scriptures and try to prove this wrong. You'll find out that what I say here is true. In Christ; Micko |
