1 | Did Mary remain a virgin? | Matt 12:47 | Krisjen | 132900 | ||
Sorry for misunderstanding you James. But, again you solidify my point. It could as easily mean Your mother and your fellow countryman from Nazareth or half brothers or cousins, etc. are outside. I infer that it means your mom and family are outside, as in Joseph's sons... then he distinguished that. I really appreciate everyone's help in clarifying this for me. I think the only clear thought is that the answer certainly doesn't detract from who Jesus was and it doesn't really add anything to His awesome nature. I will move to my next question soon! Thank you again for your help... this is a great forum! |

Goodness this is getting heated! I actually appreciate JCrichton's comments because, in my opinion he is correct. Steve, you requested scripture, I point back to the same scripture you have given, but look at them in their original Greek text. My point is actually being validated by your verses. Mary did not have other children, but Joseph did. Children that predated Jesus from a prior relationship. While we can not know for a fact that this is accurate, it certainly is supported. In fact, I looked for any scripture related to Jesus and brother -under the assumption that perhaps somewhere it would indicate the two in one sentence such as Jesus and his brother - and there were none. All related to other people. IN fact, the only scripture referencing James and Joses as Jesus' brothers, defines them as half-brothers -again going back to the Greek. Which would indicate that perhaps they were through Joseph, not Mary. Further, I disagree with your assertion that because brother meant one thing in Verse 46, it must mean the same in Verse 48... again, the same Greek word is used in both verses; however, every Greek word has many meanings. The word for brother in Greek has, as I indicated close to 7 definitions. It can in fact mean half brothers through Joseph or family members in verse 46 and 47 and then mean Behold my brothers as in brethren in Christ... |

Interesting. In my research I looked up the Greek word used and the definition states: 1) a brother, whether born of the same two parents or only of the same father or mother 2) having the same national ancestor, belonging to the same people, or countryman 3) any fellow or man 4) a fellow believer, united to another by the bond of affection 5) an associate in employment or office 6) brethren in Christ a)his brothers by blood b) all men c)apostles d) Christians, as those who are exalted to the same heavenly place Seems to leave open the possiblity that they were not in fact his blood brothers through Mary. I don't mean to imply that if Mary did have sex with her husband that she was impure, but merely that she was still a virgin. I ask because I was also curious if we know whether Jesus was of Mary's biology, DNA if you will. I can see that the Holy Spirit would insert a completely divine Jesus inside Mary to be born of man, but not necessarily genetically created with a woman. |
