1 | Why church? | Heb 10:25 | JJO | 65766
Hey Ava4, I read your post and thought it was very clear. You main theme was similar to mine, and that is, it is a bad idea to neglect worshipping with others. Paul noted in 1 Cor 6 "everything is permissiable, but not everyting is beneficial" - It would not be beneficial to miss out on regular church attendance. |

2 | Should I resign from the Forum? | 2 Thess 1:3 | JJO | 65686
Didn't read your post but briefly based on your bio and latest note I think it would be a shame if you left forum. As Johnny indicated, there will be disagreements on this board and hopefully folks can keep a Christian tone with their thoughts and disagreements. None of us are 'experts'. What's the old saying? "In the essentials unity, non-essentials liberty, and in all things charity (love)". |

3 | Why church? | Heb 10:25 | JJO | 65671
Hey Biblesearcher, actually this is a good question and comes up alot. Agree with Emmaus response, but will add that as a christian who grew up in a demonation that mixed church attendance somewhat with salvation (i.e. punching the the heavenly timecard on Sunday), I know the perception is that going to church is what saves you (at least for some people). I frequently get comments from non-(church) attending folks who say 'I don't have to go to Church to be a christian'. My reply is usually the same 'you are right, church attendance does not save you, and technically you can be saved and go to heaven without ever entering a church building. HOWEVER, I take this approach- the church is an ASSET available to the believer that is too good to pass up! Also, if one way of describing a Christian is one who has placed Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives and number one in the priority list, then we must ask the question, what does God want me to do on Sunday? I find it hard pressed to conclude that God would have me stay at home. Again, I think He wants to take advantage of the asset church provides- hearing God's word preached, fellowship and family of other believers, supporting, encouraging and ministering to each other. This is not to say we have to feel guilty or can't miss a Sunday from time to time if circumstances arise. Also, some folks have had bad experiences at certain churchs or personal conflicts, and it is very important to find a church where one feels comfortable that is also biblically based. We are blessed to have so many options in the US in terms of availability of many good churchs. Long story short, Must We? Not required for salvation, BUT, safe to say it's God will that we worship somewhere on a regular basis. |

4 | Should Christian's vote? | Heb 11:13 | JJO | 65648
Agree that Christians need to vote. Yes, our main focus should be on God, the Gospel, securing our heavenly home, BUT, God calls us to be light and salt to this earth also. The political process and candidates (however flawed and imperfect) do effect us and others. A prime example is what judges get appointed by elected officials. These judges then have a direct bearing on issues such as life and death (abortion), prayer in schools (remember the pledge one nation under God judge?) using some of our tax dollars for Christian schools, etc., protection of our wives and children from pornograhpy, etc. I want candidates and judges who support judeo christian values. Elected officials also effect us by tax laws (i.e. how much of your paycheck you can keep) and many other important issues. Lastly, the phase 'all that evil needs to truimpth is for good people to do nothing' does apply somewhat in this situation. We need Christians to vote! |

5 | Loving God with Heart vs Soul | Deut 6:5 | JJO | 64344
Thanks Hank. In the case of elaboration, I like the Amplified version of Deuteronomy 6:5 'with your entire being'. Your answer also reminds me of the teaching of old wineskins and new pieces of garment, e.g. you don't just put a 'patch' of Christianiy on, or adjust the 'old' wineskin; rather, you go 'new' and 'full' all the way, or full-time as you state. Interesting, as is the case with many of my lessons, God slows me down. That is, I was going to lead a study on the full verse and all four variables (heart, soul, mind, and strength). Long story, short, tomorrow we will just cover why we should love God, and just the attribute of loving Him with soul (found numerous wonderful models from the Psalms in terms of reference to the soul and devotion to God). Will cover heart, strength and mind next time, or two! |

6 | Do you pay tithes on whole check or part | Acts 15:1 | JJO | 64316
EdB, I agree with everything you noted in your response. I was simply trying to help out the original inquiry by focusing simply on the fact that most folks receive their income AFTER Uncle Sam has taken his piece and I think it makes sense to tithe off what you have access to. I firmly believe that God isn't not an accountant in terms of calculating "payment due" amounts as a percentage. I think it's a matter of worship, thanks, and sacrifice. For example, for some folks, 10 percent is still gravy compared to their abundance, while others may be making an even bigger sacrifice by contributing 3 percent compared to their burdens/expenses. Bottom line I think is I we focus on grower closer and closer to God and seek His guidance, He will direct our path in this area. |
