Dear Brad I appreciate your thoughtful response. I guess the importance of a subject, is in the eyes of the beholder. Yes, I am aware of far more life changing issues that can, and should be studied. You must feel that I have never visited these or discussed them before. I asure you, that is not the case. I don't always study the Word with the thought of changing the world in the mind. This was purely for my own enjoyment, but God always teaches me something from His Word, even if I am not looking for a lesson. Thanks again for your kind words, and may God richly bless you. In Christ Paul |

3 | Should Christian men wear a beard? | 1 Chr 19:5 | Bearded Bro | 190782
Brad, This study was a six month long journey through the Bible, and I really did not think it necessary to list all the scripture reference here. I do not think that one can just look up a verse of scripture and receive the complete understanding and application that God intended. It is like when you read through the Bible every year and you get something new each time. I believe this is the kind of understanding that comes when we begin to wean off the milk of the Word, and can finally start to handle the meat of the Word. I really did not intend for it to seem as you said; "making a mountain out of a mole hill". I have heard that some Baptist preachers and leaders will not allow a man with a beard to get behind their pulpit, and this is not in keeping with Christianity. You are correct that this is not necessarily God-directed, but I believe that it is God-preferred. In Christ, Paul |

Dear Azure, I have already stated that the beard is not a salvation issue. I think that in the story in Gen 27 is comparing a man with some hair to one with noticeably more hair. I think that if God gave you the ability to grow a beard you should wear it. Also I have seen plenty of Asian men with facial hair, and in their case they proudly wore what they had. |

I agree with the comment about the beard not being a salvation issue. I do however, believe that the Word of God shows that God would prefer that men would wear their beard. First God created man in his own image, and that was with the facial hair that grows when one becomes of age. Also we have the example of His only Son Jesus who clearly had a beard in Isiah 50. In the old testament days, and the days of Jesus, the men of God those that followed Jesus; the forefathers of the christian church, all had beards. There was only three situations when it was appropriate for one of the early Christians to shave their beard. 1. In the event of great sorrow morning or loss, such as in the case of Job. 2. In the case of great shame or humiliation, such as in the case of king David's ambassadors in 1Chronicles 19, or in the case of Jesus during the crucifixion. 3. In the case of leprosy or some other skin disease. The only other people who shaved their beards were the Egyptians, Romans and those who followed their pagan religions. In Leviticus 19:27 God told the people to not "mar the corner of their beard" or "shave their head round" this was the practice of some of the pagan people, and God did not want His people to even look like the pagan world. Also there is reference in both testaments where God encourages men to look and act like men, and for women to do the same. The beard is the symbol of wisdom, which God tells us in Proverbs, is to be desired more that riches. It is the very visage of masculinity, and clearly distinguishes the sex's. All this leads me to believe that God prefers His men to be bearded. Just a question, who would you rather represent in appearance The Son of man, or those who crucified Him? |

There is no Biblical teaching against men having beards, however there are some Churches that frown on there men having one. Even more so a man getting behind a pulpit. I have found after researching this topic, that God prefers men to have beards and that those beards be full style beards. For the reason you mentioned about being separate from the rest of the world, and not even giving the appearance of evil. We are not to conform to the world but we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. That means that we are not to conform to this worlds "image" as well, and that image of what a man looks like now, is what is called the "metro-sexual male". A man that is more concerned about the way he looks, than his wife or girlfriend. Always smooth shaved, with close cropped impeccably styled hair, manicured finger nails...etc... This is not what God had in mind when he created man, in his own image.....

Azure, Thanks for your response. No I am not having any trouble with wearing my beard, I just am, of the opinion that it was God's intent for men to wear a beard. I think that it is the symbol of masculinity and wisdom.
