1 | don't just listen to gods word but do | James 1:22 | ACUYFM06 | 105489
Morant61-- Thank you for your kind response. I apologize for the delay in responding. Your response troubles me, and requires some questions, at least in my mind. If I understand what you are saying correctly (correct me if I do not), nothing saves but faith alone (there is no salvation in works). However, according to your interpretation of James, one who HAS been saved by faith MUST have the works to back it up, or their salvation was not genuine (This seems to go along with the part about one "claiming" to have faith). Therefore, because works are an EFFECT of salvation, and not the CAUSE (as you stated), works are a definite indicator of faith. However, works do not just "happen" by themselves, of course. One must "take up his cross (Mark 8:34)" and become a disciple. Of course, God will aid in this process, but it is ultimately it is up to ones' self to get the job done. Otherwise, one is only "claiming" to have faith. This is what James (and Jesus) spoke of. We may be in agreement on this, but I'm not too sure. I request your thoughts on this matter. I hope I'm not being too redundant or elementary, but I believe this matter is worth clarifying. I look forward to your kind response. ACUYFM06 |

2 | don't just listen to gods word but do | James 1:22 | ACUYFM06 | 79576
This verse is the heart of what James is trying to get across. The book of James has long been in dispute. Martin Luther denounced it for two reasons: (1) It didn't "reflect Christ," and (2) It seems to contradict Paul's message to the Judaizers in Galatians. Careful study on that this matter will show this is not the case in either instance. That James puts significance on active Christianity is reminiscent of Jesus himself, who preached the same message at the end of the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 6:24-27). Though not explicitly stated, I believe that this a common motif that appears in most, if not all of the epistles. As James says, faith without works is dead. One should build the other up, which edifies the faithful Christian. I hope this helps.
3 | Can God save us the way HE WANTS TOO? | Acts 2:38 | ACUYFM06 | 72391
Maybe a better way to say it is that one need only look to the Bible as the final authority, not some human creed. There is nothing inherently wrong with using secondary sources to come to one's own conclusions. In fact, only the Bible counts, when another source disputes with it. As for your comment on faith, I have this to say. Faith without works is dead. "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that -- and shudder."
