1 | Are we to give ALL to anyone wanting it? | Bible general Archive 3 | starfire | 175760
CDBJ, I appreciate your answer, but it is not a legal question. It's trying to understand those two passages of scripture to know when/how they apply vs the commandment to honor our parents. I'm needing some insight as to my approach. I haven't decided whether as a christian I am to never sue anyone or under what circumstance. Obviously a lawyer will tell me to sue. That's his/her business. |

2 | Are we to give ALL to anyone wanting it? | Bible general Archive 3 | starfire | 175766
CDBJ, I'm sorry, as I don't understand what you are asking, I don't believe I'd understand your answer either. I also don't see what being a believer all my life has to do with me not understanding certain passages in scripture and how/when to apply them. It seems to me the direction you are going in is not addressing my question and is not helpful to ease my confusion. I am a believer, and I do my best to understand God's will through scripture which is why I'm asking others for help in doing so. Thank you for your interest and for trying to help. I'm sorry I can't relate, but certainly know that questioning my validity as a christian because I'm asking questions about scripture is not helpful at all. It is actually burdensome. I know that's not your intent, but given our lack of communication, I think you'll probably be able to better help in some of the other questions posted. |

3 | Are we to give ALL to anyone wanting it? | Bible general Archive 3 | starfire | 175775
Azurelaw, Thank you for your very loving reply. I will most certainly look up those passages. I find Matt 5:40 and Luke 6:29 confusing, but can see that there is some message beyond the words for Jesus to take it to the extreme. A long time ago I'd heard (a pastor said) that to "turn your cheek" actually meant to demand to be treated as an equal. That for the attacker to hit you on the R cheek (assuming they were R handed as most people are) required them to backhand you which was an insult...something that meant you were of less stature than they were, thus Jesus said to offer the LEFT cheek, meaning to tell them to regard you as an equal. I found that interesting, but the coat/shirt stuff I find confusing with very little commentary on it. I'm not so much trying to "claim what's mine"... if I wanted to do so, I'd have sued her as was suggested, however without proof that she destroyed the will (it was all heresay in that my father mentioned it to me privately, with no other witnesses.) As earlier stated, I haven't even charged her rent, although it would be a great help financially. I do, however, want to do right by my parent's lifelong work to honor their lives and dying wishes. I'm sure they would not want my sister to face being homeless when my dad's 2nd wife has many many times more than she'll ever need, but is filled with hatred and greed. Personally, if I truly believed that God wanted me to let her have it ALL,I'd be happy to do so, (at least for my portion)as I've done so with everything other than the house. I'd refused to sue. I should tell you we are not talking about a lot of money here (about 25K...after lawyer/real estate fees and taxes it will most likely be 15-20K at best. That's not a lot to someone who has money (she has at least 500K between her own 1st marriage, inheritances and my parent's savings. That is in addition to the value of the house)... and being in her 80s, it's not likely she'll need or even be able to use most of it. (Her health has been bad for many years already, but not something that doctors/surgery/medicine can not help with any longer.) As I'd said, she's being mean as she was from the night my dad died. Within 2 hours after his death, she was throwing *everything* of his in the garbage. (much more can be said here...about how she desecrated his grave, etc, but this is enough to portray her mindset) This meanness is especially apparent in that she will not even give me my parents wedding bands (nothing fancy, or of value other than sentimental -just plain thin gold bands) or my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary picture. (She didn't even know my grandfather, and this holds no meaning to her). When you are faced with long term unemployment, however, as my sister has been, and is in danger of losing her house....either by not being able to make the mortgage, or by having to move since her neighborhood is dangerously being taken over by drug dealers and vandalism, that inheritance could mean the difference between being homeless (worst case) and moving to a bit of a safer neighborhood upon retirement (best case). I just want to do what is right in God's eyes. I've loved God as far back as I can remember... back to my preschool days, but as stated in my profile, I only came to learn to read, enjoy and study the bible as an adult. Most of my experience with scripture has been in the past few years and I'm very very blessed to have this forum to get ask questions to help me to understand and apply it to daily life. Thank you again for your kindness and your loving Christian heart. I pray our precious Saviour blesses you abundantly for your efforts to sincerely reflect Him to others. |

Nice of you to reply and try to help. Yes, I'd searched those notes earlier, but it seems I'm either really dense on this one or it's just not the right time yet. |

Hello Angel! No, the questions were copied from a Jewish site, but still, other than part about the deity of Jesus, they expressed my own lack of understanding as well ... I have a really hard time understanding why the Jewish people have not accepted Jesus in all this time and had begun looking through their sites to get some concept of why - would help if I had a witnessing opportunity to understand where they are coming from...as I looked into the passages they mentioned, in many I shared the same perplexity as to the meaning of the passage and how it relates appropriately to Jesus (not out of doubt that He's LORD, but out of a desire to better understand Him in the scriptures) I really LOVE the study of prophecy as I eagerly await the rapture and supposedly the conversion of the Jewish people is a huge factor in the fullness of time coming into being. Also, just am intrigued by all the richness and hidden meaning in the OT as I learn more about the Jewish feasts and customs and how it related to Our Lord, Who of course practiced them and was represented in them. I've often said, I wish I knew of a "Messianic CHRISTIAN" church...a place for Christians to learn their JEWISH roots without converting to judaism of course. Does such a church exist?? Thanks for your enthusiastic reply, your time, and mostly for wanting to help (esp. if I had been questioning the authenticity of Jesus as Lord). Actually sometimes I find the passages that they (the jews) disagree with to be equally unclear, and want to better understand them. Examining all the other places in the OT where there were obvious references to Jesus and most of all, look into my heart where He resides, I thankfully KNOW WHO He is :-) |

7 | ISA 64:6 My idea of vile differsSTRONGLY | Is 64:6 | starfire | 159044
I'm sorry for being so graphic, but to TRY to explain my last question... I'd think that cloths which were used to cleanse/treat infected wounds(pus) or vomit, are more filthy than a menstrual cloth. Both of these are NOT normal (healthy)body function, but the results of an illness, possibly even a contageous one. Menstrual blood is simply blood...it's not infected or infectious. I hope you can now see where I'm coming from better. |

8 | Are menstrual cloths disgusting to God?? | Is 64:6 | starfire | 159059
Bows44, You've helped a great deal..esp. the part about scripture. Also, I hadn't thought about it as "dead" blood...interesting. Used menstrual cloths are not pleasant, but I still think there is plenty that is MUCH more smelly/disgusting ....Like the bandage over an infected wound, etc, etc. I guess the point though was God was not comparing SIN (truly vile) to this, but our OWN attempts of trying to earn our way into salvation. Maybe the point is that (using the wisdom you so kindly shared :-) our acts are pointless and no (eternal) life can flow from them just as when the menstrual cycle occurs, it's an indication that no life has been formed (egg was not fertilized); so both are useless when it comes to establishing life, eternal in one case, a child in the other. Also interesting point about the curse being the PAIN of childbirth. I've got to read that some more. I'd seen a (woman) minister once give a talk about how Eve must have been so startled after the fall when she first became pregnant and saw the stages her body was going through and prepared for delivery without anyone to help her through and not knowing WHAT to expect. That image had burned into my mind and somehow I missed that significant point that you shared. She'd had children most likely...just no PAIN with them. You have helped me my dear sister and I thank you. I appreciate the offer to speak off-site, however because some other woman may be in need of clarification regarding this passage and feeling God finds her "naturally" disgusting, I'd prefer it to be here. I don't want someone else feeling bad about her body as I had because of this passage. God Bless and Keep you, Dear Bows44!! |

9 | Are menstrual cloths disgusting to God?? | Is 64:6 | starfire | 159064
Mark, Wow you are brave responding to a question like this . LOL Truly, I appreciate your reply. I guess it was confusing and painful to me, because when I was a girl and started the menstruation process, my mother was so great telling me that it's NOT disgusting, but a *very special* gift that God gave to women that will some day allow me to have children and how it's ushering me into womanhood and how the whole bodily changes (puberty) was a magical time in a woman's life and should be viewed as simply evidence that I was growing into a woman, as God had designed. I appreciate your sharing about Eve and how much is speculation. I believe what I'm going to take from this is: 1) Menstrual rags are a reminder of our intial separation from God (I seriously doubt she had menstruated prior to the fall, because its function is to release the unfertilized egg and IF she hadn't born children, she may not even have had eggs.) Even if she did however, it still is a reminder that through our womb and it's functions we can bear life, pain and all, which is a result of the first sin. 2) Our righteous acts will never produce fruit (eternal life) just as menstruation is the evidence that there is no Fruit in our womb (child). Also 3) Also, it's really NOT menstruation, but the rags that were used that are compared to our own acts in our (futile) attempt for salvation. (and since menstual blood, as any secretion was considered "unclean", perhaps in the original language it was not "filthy" rags, but "unclean" rags. Neither is worthy of being in the Holy presence of our Lord. Thank you so much for caring enough to write and offer insight and comfort regarding this. May the Lord Bless You and Keep You |

Hank, Thank you for taking time to share your experiences with me regarding studying the bible. I will look into some of the ones you mention. I recently bought a large print (for night time reading) Amplified bible and was very disappointed. There is no concordance and very few footnotes. I've seen the regular print edition(which is only 5 pt) and it has MUCH, MUCH more. I wouldn't mind anothe 1/2 inch or even inch of thickness if they'd have included everything. Just thought I'd try to share a bit of my own experiences in case anyone is considering one. |

12 | Who is the god of fortresses | Daniel | starfire | 169797
Dan 11:38 what is "he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, costly stones and treasures." On another site I found this explanation: God of fortresses: Since verse 37 informs us, this king will regard no god, and place himself above all gods. What is meant here? The word fortress, zw (m Ma owz means place or means of safety, protection, refuge, stronghold and is often translated strength.) He will honor in the place of god, strength or power. He will honor the power of military might and strength. North Korea, which is communist and atheistic, is a good picture of this new religion. The antichrist will be a materialist, denying the spiritual realm and exalting “military might” |

13 | concerning the death of John the Baptist | Matt 14:12 | starfire | 170786
I wondered about this too...then thought, it is a fact that Jesus is all knowing. As a human, we could not relate to that... we'd have NOTHING to say to establish a relationship.... Perhaps they TOLD Jesus because THEY sought the solace of HIS words for them... or to assure Him that they had respectfully buried John's body. One day, we can ask ourselves:-) |

Wow! terrib! Thank YOU! (and thank YOU Holy Spirit for bringing me to this forum with all these wonderful believers who also LOVE studying God's Word) You've helped me tremendously (as have all the earlier postings). I now see that there are several ways of defining the word even in the Greek form and it makes sense! I like your word, "Lifestyle" for the second meaning and the human inhabitants of the earth for the first, esp. because, as was pointed out, Christ died for the INDIVIDUAL LIFE of each inhabitant! That helps me to know it's right on target! I am most appreciative,WildOliveShoot asI wasn't even aware of how to find the word's meaning in that kind of depth (in it's original language)and am certainly going to be checking out that Blue Letter Bible Dictionary site!! THAT will be a tremendous help in my bible study. Tim Moran, you have such a clear way of teaching...definitely a gift of the Spirit...(so yes, terrib, I do believe I was Spirit led to this group!) Thank you for giving such clarity to it all. And last, regarding that Preacher; I was very upset and concerned with His comment. I've been a believer all my life and have loved God dearly, but it hasn't been until the past few years that I've begun to read/study the bible and I find it sooo uplifting and fascinating when I understand it. I must confess, when I don't understand it, I do pray and ask the Holy Spirit to lend me understanding, but I get very upset. Seriously, I feel like I just want to devour the Word because when I "get" something, ESP. something that seemed contradictory and I find that it indeed isn't and it's NOT a matter of personal interpretation, as in this case, it's in black and white (dictionary) as well as seen through Jesus' sacrifice for us! I truly got so much COMFORT from your last paragraph, terrib, because I'd found that scripture (when trying to find scripturally where that preacher was coming from) and I got so upset, thinking I'm doing something to block the flow of the Holy Spirit, that I didn't realize the obvious which you stated so well in your example. That was *excellent*. May God Bless You ALL with His Supernatural Favor and Smile upon you all the days of your lives :-) What a wonderful, WONDER FILLED Lord we serve. I practically cry with gratitude that He accepted ME into HIS family! (And naturally for the sacrifice of Jesus that allowed us to approach the throne in prayer, hand in hand with the Holy Spirit :) |

15 | Jn3:16 ;1Jn2:15 Do/don't love the world | John 3:16 | starfire | 150906
Indeed you *are* an ANGEL! I've looked up these passages and found such joy in them; particularly John 16:20-30!! I've read the gospels through many times, but it's amazing how a certain passage can spring to life in meaning at times when we are seeking (and I thank YOU for your part in it) :-) I know there are some things not to be understood, but I (blind faith?) believe that God would NOT have written down the WORD if we weren't to understand it with our human minds and hearts. (at least on some level...there's that word again, Tim!) I'm sure there is even MORE depth to it than we can comprehend until that glorious day when all truth will be revealed :-) You make an excellent point in that Jesus did not come to explain it to us, but to save us. The Holy Spirit is the one guiding us in our understanding and I now see that there is no shame or defeat or disappointing God (beause I can't understand it without help)in asking other well learned and well loved believers in the Word for their assistance. Terrib has shown me how the Holy Spirit IS teaching me...through whatever means I seek. As John Hagee says and I love so much, "HALLELUIA to the LAMB of GOD!! |

17 | Alive and REMAIN?What choice do we have? | 1 Thess 4:17 | starfire | 152089
Thank YOU Tim.... Oh, HOW I wish I could understand this as clearly as you do. You really helped a LOT. At first I thought it meant "remain" as in "remain true" aka "did not accept the mark" which would mean the rapture would definitely not be pre-trib. I feel better now. Maranatha! |

18 | Morning (or Day) Star: Lucifer or JESUS? | Revelation | starfire | 194263
Oh, Thank you....I didn't know that part would be needed...so sorry: 1 Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together And all the sons of God shouted for joy? 2 Is 14:12 "How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! 3 2 Pet 1:19 So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. 4 Rev 2:28 and I will give him the morning star. 5 Rev 22:16 "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star." I'm particularly referring to the Isaiah14:12,which is clearly about Lucifer and the Rev 22:16,which is clearly JESUS, although Repeatedly throughout scripture (esp. if you look at different translations) there will be a reference to Jesus as the Morning Star. It doesn't seem right for both to have that title, so I'm wondering if in the original languages, they are referring to different things (or even different aspects??) of the morning star?? |

19 | Morning (or Day) Star: Lucifer or JESUS? | Revelation | starfire | 194283
Thank you for your reply.. Actually I had enumerated the passages and should have put a designator to show that (like a parenthesis)...so my 2nd ref was IS14:12. I'm so glad you were able to make sense of it. Actually I am just wondering why God refers to satan and to His SON with the same reference. That (to me) would be like calling both satan and my son, "Hey Sunshine".... Perhaps its too confusing to put in words. (sigh) I do appreciate your effort and thank you! |

20 | Morning (or Day) Star: Lucifer or JESUS? | Revelation | starfire | 194284
You are so kind to take time to share all this with me. Actually, since then I did get John MacArthur's Bible (unfortunately in NKJ because NASB wasn't available then). It is wonderful, only, like you, I find myself going from one bible to the next to try to understand passages. Wouldn't it be GREAT if someone took JUST THE COMMENTS from EACH translation out there by each prominent theologen and list them by chapter and verse in ONE book...When just trying to understand a passage, (not an in depth study of a whole book) Commentaries are too long to read through and many don't answer (or tell me much more) than the notes anyway. Again, thanks so much. |
