1 | Keep the Sabbath Holy? | Bible general Archive 3 | onlyme | 190879
My question is, does the 4'th commandment pertain only to the time period and the audience at the time of the commandments, meaning the Israelites of Moses' day, or does it pertain to all Christians for all time? Sorry I was not clearer originally. There seems to be scriptural evidence supporting both views. There are in fact several questions related to this topic (in my mind) but primarily I am concerned about the possibility that non-SDA (Seventh Day Adventists) Sunday worshippers may be breaking one of the commandments, and thereby breaking all commandments in God's eyes. Thanks again. |

Doc, thank you for the response, and thank you for pointing out Hebrews 4: to me. What I think I read there indicates that the 'rest' we need is not so much a cessation of labor, but an experience of God's Rest. Also, the accent is no longer on a single specific day of the week (Sabbath) but it is on Today, meaning every day. Therefore every day we need to be resting in God. However, there is also a reference to 'Sabbath-rest'. Does this mean resting on the Sabbath, or does this mean a Sabbath-like rest Today (and every day)? As to your explanation that "Christ finished His work on the first day of the week" I must say I've never heard it phrased like that before but that is certainly one way to look at it. Is there a passage in scripture that you were quoting? 1 Corinthians 16:1,2 is only talking about collecting money on the first day of the week, not relevant to this discussion that I can see. The same holds true for Acts 20:7 which describes Paul breaking bread and later on raising Eutychus from the dead. Revelation 1:10 is about a vision that God gives to John. All three of these verses mention the first day of the week, however there is no apparent significance to the day, and nothing that I can see there to support the assertion in the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith that "...the observation of the last day of the week being abolished" is valid. There seems to be no clear cut answer, which is a shame. There are valid arguments and scripture supporting both views of Sabbath keeping and Sunday Worship. |

How so? The Ten Commandments were created for the Israelites who were being rebellious and causing enough anger in God that he nearly destroyed them all.

Doc, I realize that Hebrews 4 is not about which day is the Sabbath, I didn't mean to imply that it did. I'm not sure what 'already extant' change you are referring to, as I can determine no scriptural change in the Sabbath at all. Next, I'm wondering which change you claim had been established as normative at that time, since this (the writing of the book of Hebrews) was only 30 years or so after Jesus' Resurrection. I have not read the London Baptist Confession of Faith other than what has been quoted by you and some others, however there is a line in your quote of it that ends "the observation of the last day of the week being abolished." I can find absolutely no mention of that in scripture. Are you equating those writings with scripture? Finally I do not demean tradition, but in this case I am simply trying to understand it. 'This case' in this instance is really not one tradition but two, Sabbath worship vs. Sunday worship, both of which have existed as tradition for a very long time. I do agree that the SDA folks seem to have fallen into a mire of legalism, which is, as you say, unhealthy just as it was for the Pharisees. Thank you again for your time and thoughts. |

RC, I find myself replying to these posts with a tendency to question, if not disagree with the remarks made. This is not meant to be argumentative, please understand. It is the only way I can think of to try to see both sides of the issue. So, with that in mind . . . What makes you say that the Law didn't work? I think a lot of people would disagree. Judaism was ended? I'm sure there are millions of Jews out there that will be most disheartened to hear that! We do rest in Christ, but He "is performing all the Law for us"? I've never heard that one before. Why would He "perform" the Laws if they didn't work? Thanks for your time. |

RC, I completely agree that the Law never saved anyone. It may be that SDAs would also agree. One of their points, however, is that if we do not rest and worship on the Sabbath, then we are breaking a commandment, which in turn is equivalent to breaking all commandments, which in turn condemns us. So while the Law cannot save us, breaking the Law can condemn us. Judaism is the worship of God, but not of the Son. I am certainly no expert on Judaism so I would rather not discuss it. It was just that your original comment about it took me by surprise. The comment about Christ performing the Law was your comment originally. When He said "It is finished" He was not talking about the Law. Again, thanks for your time. |

Lion, You have just hit on one of the favorite SDA quotes. Certainly He did not come to abolish the Law, but what is the result of His fulfilling it? Once something has been fulfilled, in some cases it is also ended. Is that the case? It is one of those situations where you can read into it differently, I believe. Thanks |

Jeff, You've touched on another topic that I was going to explore at a later date when you used the phrase "traditional position of the Christian church". Which tradition of which Christian church were you referring to? There are so many different flavors to choose from! And there is scriptual support for a wide variety of views as well, which is the root of my frustration. To support my TC claim, you need to read Exodus. Who did God create the TC for? The Israelites, His chosen people. Israelites who were busy making a golden calf to worship while God was speaking to Moses! But my reference or main point was about the Sabbath. Exodus 31: 12 Then the Lord said to Moses "Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. ..." Following that in Exodus 32, the Israelites fashioned the golden calf and in Exodus 33:3 He tells them He will not go with them because He might destroy them. Finally in Exodus 34 the new stone tablets are created. I do have my own opinions, it was other opinions that I've been interested in hearing. Thanks. |

lion, I still do not know what scripture you are referring to that states that Jesus fulfilled the law. As far as the Last Supper is concerned, the wine, the blood of the new covenant was for the forgivenes of our sins, nothing at all to do with the Ten Commandments. 1 Timothy 4:16, 2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16,17 and 2 Peter 1:20,21 are not relevant to this thread that I can see. Romans 15:4 refers to everything that was written in the past having importance. This would certainly include the Ten Commandments, which would include Sabbath worship. What does that scripture clarify for you? Thanks |

Doc, Before I made my first post here I attempted to find any previous threads on the subject but my searches came up empty. I would be most appreciative if you could give me the parameter(s) to use in order to find previous discussions. I apologize to anyone who has been inconvenienced by my posts in any way. All I wanted was to hear people's opinions on the subject. For the last day or so I have been only replying to comments and observations made, not wanting to ignore anyone who bothered to post. If you are the forum moderator I will not take any offense if you (or whoever the moderator may be) should decide to lock this thread. In case that does happen I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who did share their thoughts and questions, and those who also pointed out relevant passages in the Bible to me. The whole topic was summed up nicely (in my mind anyway) by something that you yourself wrote: "God's work ended on the seventh day of the week, Christ's work ended on the first day of the week." We have our New Covenant in Christ. Amen. |

If this person had repented of his sins and accepted Jesus as his savior which apparently he had, then I've no doubt that he 'made it' to heaven.
