1 | Ecumenical Movement Avoid or Not? | Bible general | EdB | 239731
Yes we must guard against deception but I am always reminded of Jesus' prayer John 17:21 (NASB) 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. It seems we spend more time making sure our doctrine is not offended, not ignored and less time about being one in the body of Christ. Does this mean we compromise our doctrine? I don't think so but it also does not relieve us from trying to find solution for our division. Was it God's intent to reform the church? Yes I think it was. But no one ever claimed it was God's guidance to divide the church. That was man's solution when man determined God was able to correct the very thing scripture tells us Christ is the head of. |

John 17:21 (NASB) 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. That said I think we have to realize some of our views of the Catholics is almost the same view that many Catholics have of Protestants. For better or for worst the Catholic church protected, preserved and promoted Christianity for 1500 years. Now while we can criticize their doctrine it does little good to stand outside and say they are wrong. The only way error will be corrected is if it is realized. What we need to do it try to establish dialogue so error can be discussed and hopefully corrected. When we stop talking and start pointing nothing is accomplished. I don't know what this so called Ecumenical Movement that this Bishop and others addressed is but responding to it as you are all wrong and destined for hell will not help. |

Actually I know what the Ecumenical Movement is I just didn't know about this Bishop and Copeland Meeting. I just saw a brief Youtube video of it. I'm not a fan of the Reformation especially the results. That said the Church of Rome did need to be reformed but I think political aspirations came into play way stronger than they should have. Enough said on that point. The point I was trying to make is I believe the will of God is for the Body of Christ to be one. Right now we have 3000 plus denominations some pointing their finger at each other saying every one is dead wrong but us. And we have Hatred between the Catholics and Protestants. Unity will never be accomplished if people refuse to talk and seek understanding between them. If everyone instead points their fingers and say you are all wrong and on your way to hell I don't think there will ever be a unified Body of Christ. |

4 | Ecumenical Movement Avoid or Not? | Bible general | EdB | 239763
I think there are three groups talked about here. Believers, Non Believers and Believers that because they were taught by particular Apostle think they are better than the others. Jesus prayed for unity for Believers. Jesus also knows believers would never find unity in this world. Luke 12:51 passage you mentioned. Jesus was concerned of the very thing Paul ran into where one group instead of be followers of Christ were followers of Apollo and other followers of Paul 1 Corinthians 1:12-13 (NKJV) 12 Now I say this, that each of you says, "I am of Paul," or "I am of Apollos," or "I am of Cephas," or "I am of Christ." 13 Is Christ divided? ... Dividing the Body of Christ is the problem not trying to find unity with unbelievers or not true Christians. What we have to do is sit down and talk to understand the other. We all have ideas, perceptions, war stories, second hand info, and in some case real hurts. We need fact which only comes from honest dialogue. Discussion and talk brings understanding, compassion and mercy. |

5 | belief in hell? | Bible general | EdB | 240089
It does bother folks that is why most Christians try to get other people saved. I believe some of the most accomplished "soul winners" are those that have internalized the realities of hell. We are not given the option of simply saying we don't believe in this or that. We are told we must rightly divide scripture.2 Tim 2:15 Which means to handle the Word of God correctly or in a straight forward manner. We are not given the luxury of being able to ignore or remove the sections that don't appeal to us. Too many claim today to be Christians but only believe the parts of Christianity that they want to believe. Some have even made their own God by taking the attributes of God they like and keeping them and discarding the parts they don't like. What they end up with in not God of Creation the God of Abraham Issac and Jacob at all but a god created by them. A false god. Hell is a reality. Jesus spoke of it often. It is woven throughout scripture. How can we say we believe Jesus just not the parts we don't agree with? It is all or nothing. |

I missed something what is this reference to Arthur Murrey about? I don't see any mention of him except in this post calling him a heretic. Why did his name come up at all? |

8 | The real price of a Bible? | Bible general | EdB | 240584
I share your concerns and agree that future seems bleak. My opinion the day ministry changed from being a calling to a career was the day the Christian church opened the door for everything you mentioned. Pastors are selected from resumes instead of by prayer. Ministry success is measured in headcount or dollars instead of disciple making. The society's attitude has also changed. Many people attend not in obedience to God but rather what is in it for them. Christian religion is no longer a lifestyle but rather something we do on Sunday. Look at Islam. It requires a commitment that is not found in Christianity. It becomes a lifestyle long lost to Christianity and it contains absolutes that are not left up to everyone's own interpretation. To me the biggest problem is instead of reforming the church it was instead fragmented with each fragment left to it own opinions and interpretations. Instead of being one body of Christ we are now many bodies that are often in conflict or at the very best only on strained speaking terms. John 17:20-21 (NASB) 20 "I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. 1 Corinthians 1:10 (NASB) 10 Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. Ephesians 4:1-3 (NASB) 1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, 3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. |

10 | is the book of enoch part of the gospel | Bible general | EdB | 241073
the answer given may be a bit misleading. I do not believe the Roman Catholic church give any credence to the Book of Enoch. Question: "What is the book of Enoch and should it be in the Bible?" Answer: The Book of Enoch is any of several pseudepigraphal (falsely attributed works, texts whose claimed authorship is unfounded) works that attribute themselves to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah; that is, Enoch son of Jared (Genesis 5:18). Enoch is also one of the two people in the Bible taken up to heaven without dying (the other being Elijah), as the Bible says "And Enoch walked with God, and he was not; for God took him." (Genesis 5:24; see also Hebrews 11:5). Most commonly, the phrase "Book of Enoch" refers to 1 Enoch, which is wholly extant only in the Ethiopic language. The biblical book of Jude quotes from the Book of Enoch in verses 14-15, “Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: ‘See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.’” But this does not mean the Book of Enoch is inspired by God and should be in the Bible. Jude’s quote is not the only quote in the Bible from a non-biblical source. The Apostle Paul quotes Epimenides in Titus 1:12 but that does not mean we should give any additional authority to Epimenides’ writings. The same is true with Jude, verses 14-15. Jude quoting from the book of Enoch does not indicate the entire Book of Enoch is inspired, or even true. All it means is that particular verse is true. It is interesting to note that no scholars believe the Book of Enoch to have truly been written by the Enoch in the Bible. Enoch was seven generations from Adam, prior to the Flood (Genesis 5:1-24). Evidently, though, this was genuinely something that Enoch prophesied – or the Bible would not attribute it to him, “Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men…” (Jude 14). This saying of Enoch was evidently handed down by tradition, and eventually recorded in the Book of Enoch. We should treat the Book of Enoch (and the other books like it) in the same manner we do the other Apocryphal writings. Some of what the Apocrypha says is true and correct, but at the same time, much of it is false and historically inaccurate. If you read these books, you have to treat them as interesting but fallible historical documents, not as the inspired, authoritative Word of God. Recommended Resources: The Canon of Scripture by F.F. 11 | The GENEVA BIBLE anything of interest? | Bible general | EdB | 241382
I use the NASB to do personal study but I find I have a hard time reading aloud from it so I use either the NJKV or NLT. I like the NLT because for many listeners English is a second language and the NLT is easy for them to understand.
12 | God created man sin-ful? | Bible general | EdB | 241545
Don't get confused here what you are discussing is seen by most serious students of scripture. It is not a Calvin/Luther thing. You are not coming to the same conclusion of just Calvin and Luther but the conclusions of everyone that seeks the truth in scripture. This truth once discovered is often the place where man stops seeking more of God and starts allowing his own ideas shape his final concept/theology of the truth. Hence we have some 3000 plus denominations/theologies all claiming they are the truth. I believe this is where the leading of the Holy Spirit is so important. |

13 | HCSB what's your opinion? | Bible general | EdB | 241550
I have and use the HCSB both hard copy and electronically. My only concern is when a verse is notated as "some manuscripts omit the last part of this passage" or "some manuscripts read thus and such" or "some manuscripts add this or that word" they don't identify the manuscript. It could be a change made by the Textus Receptus or a change by Westcott and Hort. I simply like to know who is making the claim that verse should read different. I still prefer the NASB for personal study, NLT when I want simplicity and clarity of understanding, and NKJV to preach from. Please post your conclusions when you have formed them, I would be interested in hearing what you think. |

14 | Has The GLORY of the LORD left the USA? | Bible general | EdB | 241551
I like what John MacArthur says on this subject. The phrase taken out of the way must not be interpreted to mean that the Holy Spirit will be removed from the world. That is impossible, since He is omnipresent. Nor could anyone be saved during the Tribulation (cf. Rev. 7:14) apart from His regenerating work (John 3:3-8; Titus 3:5). The phrase refers not to the removal of the Holy Spirit from the world, but rather to the cessation of His restraining work. Excerpt from MacArthur's commentary on 2 Thess. |

15 | difference in a Christians funeral? | Bible general | EdB | 241646
I tend to agree with your view of funeral industry. I'm leaning toward cremation with no real funeral, but instead a memorial service. In the past I attended the funeral of my Grandparents and my memory of them is seeing them dead in the casket. My own parents were cremated with a memorial service and my memory of them is when I last saw them alive and living. I think you are talking of the Amish when you say Mennonite with horse and buggy. I was born and raised in Pa near Amish country and I'm very familar with them. Many in background (great grand parents) were Mennonite and while they held close belief with the Amish they all drove cars and used electricity. I will say you will not get a finer coffin than one built by Amish craftsman. |

16 | When study what to read first | Bible general | EdB | 242101
I tend to steer people away from John. While John is the book of love many of the concepts appear abstract until you get better rooted in Christianity. The book of Mark is written very clearly and there isn't any confusing similes. In my opinion it is written more to the understanding of man. |

17 | When study what to read first | Bible general | EdB | 242102
I need to clarify what I meant when I said I tend to steer people away from John. I meant I tend to steer new Christians away from John until they get a better understanding of some of the concepts of Christianity. John 1:1 can be confusing if you don't understand the concept of God and Trinity. How much more is John 6 which theologians argue about to this day. |

18 | PRYING TO THE HOLY SPIRIT ? | Bible general | EdB | 242140
I think if you examine the question a little deeper you will find that Catholics do pray to the Holy Spirit. Also I know that he is our counselor and friend and as such I can understand addressing the Holy Spirit. Also there is a few worship songs where the lyrics are speaking directly to the Holy Spirit such as "Oh Holy Spirit come fill this place". I see no real problem praying to any person of the God Head but Jesus when asked by the disciples to teach them to pray addressed Our Heavenly Father (God). It could be argued that Jesus did this since He had not died or sent back the Holy Spirit at this point in time. Again we are praying to God and God is God the Father God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. As humans we are incapable of fully understanding the God Head let alone trying to separate Them. |
