1 | Women Preachers? Yes or No? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aixen7z4 | 94714
Not at all. Surely you are confounding the kingdom of God with the kingdoms of this world. "It is not permitted" means it is not permitted by God. Do you suppose that "the law" in 1 Cor 14:34 refers to "the law of the land"?!? The God who asked us to not be conformed to the world in Romans 12, and who says to be friends with the world is to be God's enemy, in 1 John 2, would surely not be here asking us to govern the church according to the "law of the land". |

It may be that you have been doing a little too much reading. Where did you read that "women were yelling across to their husbands, asking what Paul was teaching". That is not in the Bible. So you may say they are manmade words and stick by your decision to not live by them. The immediate passage stands as written, and our only choice is to obey it or to disobey it. Are women allowed to be leaders in church or not? The scriptures clearly say no. Why? You may want to ponder the principle set out in 1Co 11:3. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. |

What "the law" says is that women are to be "under obedience". You may want to read Genesis 3:16 and other passages such as Numbers 30. As Paul says to Timothy, (1 Tim 2:13) "Adam was formed first, then Eve". God has a hierarchy of leadership (See 1 Cor 11:3) and Jesus submitted himself to it. He humbled himself and became obedient (Phil 2:8). We should let the same mind be in us and simply do what he says. We should not be conformed to this world (Romans 12:2). When you speak of women leaders in the Old Testament, whom do you think of? Do you think of Miriam, who was inflicted with leprosy because she resented the leadership of Moses and tried to usurp it? Do you think of Deborah, who went into battle with Barak because he was afraid to go without her? Paul says it is a shame for a woman to speak in the church. It may be that the shame is on the men who are too timid to take the leadership. The Lord asks us to avoid making the same mistake that Adam made. |

4 | GOD TURNED HIS BACK ON JESUS WHEN JESUS | Bible general Archive 2 | Aixen7z4 | 94731
However, it does say (Mat 27:46) that when he was on the sross, Jesus cried, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is to say, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Paul tells us (2 Corinthians 5:21) that God had made him to be sin for us. We understand that God is holy and thus (Heb 7:26) separate from sinners. We know that sin separates between us and God, and our sins hide his face from us (Isa 59:2). We put these facts together and we think that God did turn his back on Jesus when (1 Pet 2:24) he bore our sins in his body on the tree. |

Concerning the question whether God turned his back on Jesus on the cross, no more can be said than what I have said. The idea is not based on human reasoning but comes when one combines the scriptures cited. Your answer is reasonable. It may be true that God did never turn his back on him. However, we may not base this on the idea that God never turns his back on us. I will tell you that he does do that, even if only momentarily. His presence does not leave us, but he sometimes turns his face. "For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God. For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer" (Isaiah 54). |

6 | verify cross on donkeys back | Bible general Archive 2 | Aixen7z4 | 94743
Legend indeed. Likely as not the donkey has always had it's cross. Yet we are made to think as we read (John 12:14) "And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass's colt". Matthew says, (Mt 21:9) that "the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest". One story says that as they shouted he lowered his eyes a moment, and there upon the donkeys shoulders, a cross. One wonders if he noticed it, and how it made him feel. Man of sorrows, what a name For the Son of God who came Ruined sinners to reclaim Hellelujah! What a Savior! Someone asked, "Who is this?" And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. |

I suppose we are willing to think that God did forsake Jesus on the cross because we know he was taking our place and we know that that is what we deserved. He had to suffer, not only in his soul (Mt 26:38) but also in his body (Mt 27:35) and in his spirit. He had to die, and spiritual death means separation from God (Ephesians 2). Clearly, if God the Father turned his back on Jesus, it was only for a moment. He would soon receive him into glory. A friend of mine believes Psalm 24:7ff was sung for him in Heaven when he returned. I do not know. One other thought. I wonder if Jesus was uttering the phrase of the forsaken from Psalm 22 in order to show the hearers that he was fulfilling the prophecy. It may be that it was the prophet who had uttered that phrase because he knew that Christ would use it. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had shown to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to die on a cross, he had uttered it. In any case, God did not send any angels to protect him. He did not strike his attackers dead. He stood by, so to speak, while they crucified him, in our place. It must have seemed that God had not only forsaken him but that God himself had turned on him, to punish him for our sins. |

Your points are very well taken. These are some of the deep things of God that call forth wonder and praise. ’Tis mystery all: th’Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. |

Yes. That's right. It seems that his "Why ..." did not require an answer, but expressed the depths of his suffering and the mystery of it all, to us. Let us hope that many who read of it here appreciate it, in some measure reflecting what he felt.

I am sure there is some value in those efforts and in those compilations. How much, I cannot say. I will only say I am glad the word of God itself is that much more consistent and certain. As for your conclusion, if a one-word answer could convey it, I would say "Amen". If I could see your cursor, I would shake your hand. It is marvelous how each part of Scripture shows itself to be the word of God, principally because it is endorsed or authorized by our Lord Jesus Christ. It also testifies of him and for him. But the Spirit and the Word go so well together, the human author hardly seems to matter, except that he is a "holy man" whom the Spirit chose to use and a part of the context in which the holy Spirit spoke. The focus rightly rests on the one divine Author. |

12 | Are your answers authoritative? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aixen7z4 | 95148
I did not mean to suggest that it is an impressive personal biography that qualifies a person to give authoritative answers. Nor am I nominating myself for such a position. Nevertheless, at your request, I will look for "update user info" to see if I can provide some useful info. I am not promising here since I have found that revelation of personal information such as education, profession, and experience can garner resentment as easily as it might respect. At hishows.aimoo.com there is a thread for personal testimonies and each member or visitor is encouraged to provide theirs. I support the exhortation that each reader follow the example of the Bereans and to search the scriptures to see if the things said are so (Acts 17:11). Please note, though, that they were double-checking Paul who, as his manner was, "reasoned with them out of the scriptures" (Acts 17:2). It is my observation that many people on many forums post opinions without referring us to any scripture. We may not be able to check to see if these things are so because we have no idea where the ideas came from. On the other hand there are those who suggest there is no scripture on a subject when others know there is. At hishows.aimoo.com the monitors are able to asssist the discussion by following scriptural points with supporting scriptural references. They edit responses to eliminate personal attactks and attempts at intimidation. They do such things in order to ensure that the discussion is not only a chance for anyone to express their opinion but also profitable to anyone who comes by to read. Actually, they earn their position not because of who they are but because of the way they have conducted themselves on the forum. The participants seem to appreciate them because they help to ensure that questions are potentially profitable and that all accepted questions receive authoritative answers. By the way, authoritative answers are defined as those which consider all of Scripture. It is the Bible and not the person who is seen as the authority. The suggestion here is that that authority should be evident on a Bible forum. |

The Lord has put the church together as he has put our bodies together. There is one head -- that is Christ. There are leaders -- they are called bishops, overseers, elders. There are deacons. These jobs are not given to women. But there are so many other jobs and positions and gifts! Surely, one of the jobs women can do is to bring souls to our Lord. Lois and Eunice had brought Timothy to the Lord. But then they must hand then over to the shepherds such as Paul. The roles that women can play in the church are so many, they seem to be almost limitless. But they are not allowed to be leaders of men. |

My dear sister, Hank is correct. Sex is for you and your husband. You need not be embarrassed to discuss anything with him. On the other hand, you need not discuss what you do with anyone else. If it is a problem for either of you you should see a professional. Now, if you click on as authors name and find out that he is a professional, I suggest that you note his e-mail address and write to him privately. Yes, counseling is available by e-mail and by telephone. You seem to be a happy and well-adjusted couple. You do not need to be confused, or to develop problems that do not now exist. You said you and your husband have both "recently came back to God" and really want to do his will. Just remember that God's will is in his word. Be sure you are not bringing back anything you learned "out there" that is contrary to the word of God. So far you have not mentioned any. |

15 | what type of book is the bible, research | Bible general Archive 2 | Aixen7z4 | 100500
The Bible is all that. It is also the book of books. It might be true to say it is not one book but many books in one. It calls itself the Scriptures, or the Writings. Holy men wrote as they were moved on by the Holy Spirit. They wrote things thy could not know by themselves and things they could not fully understand. The Bible is God's word to man, written by many men, with wisdom beyond that of any man. It is the Book of books. It is beyond any other. God-breathed (2 Tim 3:16). Eternal (Psa 119:89). The truth (John 17:17). You can base your life on it. |

16 | Where do I find Paul's death in Rome? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aixen7z4 | 100504
Dear Emmaus: The extra information seems interesting, although I must confess I only glanced through it. Truth is, I don't know if I can trust that information, or if it is useful. Notice that the questioner asked specifically: "(In) what books in the bible would I find what happened ...?". I wonder why it was not simply "Where would I find information about what happened ...?". This person seems to place information from the Bible in a special category. I would like to get a little taste for the tradition that values non-Biblical information along with Biblical information. What if the person had asked, "In what books in the Bible would I find what happened to Mary next?" Is it enough to say that that information is not in the Bible? Or can we with confidence present other information from outside of the Bible? |

17 | Where do I find Paul's death in Rome? | Bible general Archive 2 | Aixen7z4 | 100518
My friend, Emmaus, I agree that false teaching came early into the church and it is still around today. Peter said way back then (2 Peter 2:1) that "there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you". How do we combat their teachings? I think of the words of the Lord. In Mathew 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, "Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures". The scriptures. The scriptures. That is what keeps us from erring. We must know the scriptures. I have read a few secular books in my time. In some circles I cannot say this, but I'll say here: I have lost my taste for them. I either find to be in agreement with the scriptures, in which case I find them superfluous, or they are in disagreement with the scriptures and I find them distasteful. I still read one now and then, even as I read the postings on the forums. But mostly, I must say, I read the Bible. |

Brother Hank, I do agree. It is probably safe to read anything if one is careful to compare it with scripture and dispose of it according to how it comports. Two cautions I should add though. In agreeing that extra-Biblical readings should be taken with a grain of salt, I would say that having to take a grain of salt too too often can lead to hypertension. The second point is that, with the press of time that we experience today, we often have to choose what we read, the Bible or some other book. There is a judgment to be made on how we divide not only the word but also our time. A third caution is not really mine but Paul’s. There are other types of readings in the world. We should (1 Tim 1:4) Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. (1 Tim 4:7) But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. (2Ti 4:4) (Some) turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. (Tit 1:14) fables, and commandments of men, (can) turn (us) from the truth. Let me also say that with so many authors of yesterday and today saying so many things, one can possibly become confused. Otherwise one must spend a lot of time sifting error from truth. The Bible writers, on the other hand, they do not contradict each other. Having said all that, I am not saying that all non-Biblical writing is dangerous. For example, a word to the wise is enough. |

Sorry about the mixed message, Emmaus. I have a passing interest; it is not deep. I have spent many years in the education system and have been struck by the lack of balance between knowledge and application. My present orientation is to action rather than to much more study. However, I do find a need to keep digging into the Scriptures. As for other writings, I browse in order to keep aware. It is simply where I am right now. And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. |
