1 | do babies go to heaven or hell? | Ps 51:5 | wing7 | 37656
There is a mediating view between the two you have mentioned. Many, including myself, affirm that babies are born with a sinful nature (see Ps. 51:5). Theologians have long distinguished between what is called "original sin," that is, the sinful nature we inherit by being born into a sinful race, and "actual sin," that is, sin that is willfully committed against God. The fact that babies do not commit "actual sin" does not eliminate the fact of "original sin" and their inherited guilt. However, in view of God's justice and mercy I believe that Scripture teaches that atoning provision is made for these little ones who are guilty of original sin but not actual sin. However, there is a time (we don't know when exactly) in each child's life when he/she does become aware that their sinful acts are evil - their moral consciousness having developed through the activity of conscience - and thus they become guilty of "actual sin," again, committing wrongs that they KNOW are wrong, the so called "age of accountability." Prior to this time, however, it is my conviction that the blood of Christ covers the guilt of original sin for these little ones who die.
