1 | When was the book of Revelation written? | Rev 1:9 | pierser | 134968
Scholars are almost unanimous in dating Revelation about A.D. 95. The date must be late enough to allow for the existence and development of the conditions described concerning the seven churches of asia. Also a date must be sought which reflects the persecution for Christians to yield to emperor worship. This seems to place the date in the reign of Domitian (A.D. 81-96) Polycarp indicated that the church in Smyrna was founded after A.D. 64. Persecution of Christians took place during the reign of Nero (A.D. 54-68), however the Neronian persecution was limited to Rome and did not involve emperor worship. Irenaeus wrote (A.D. 180-190) that John, the evangelist and apostle, exiled to Patmos had written his revelation at the close of Domitian's reign. There have been other suggested dates, but they don't match the internal evidence of the book.
