1 | Can you define Arminian? | Bible general Archive 1 | lovetosign | 17873
Hello and Greetings! I encourage everyone to study these points about Calvinism and Arminianism strongly before just deciding one way. I myself am a "Calminian", I don't agree with either one all the way. But take a look for yourself. T - Total Depravity U - Unconditional Election L - Limited Atonement I - Irresistible Grace P - Preservation of the Saints T.U.L.I.P - This is the Acronym for the Calvinist Perspective, for an in depth view of this perspective see: http://www.prca.org/pamphlets/pamphlet_41.html This site explains it quite well! A letter from John Wesley explains the Arminian perspective quite well along with the calvanist too. http://gbgm-umc.org/umhistory/wesley/arminian.stm Another goodie: http://www.dcn.davis.ca.us/(type a tilda here)gvcc/theology_notes/Calvin_and_Arminius.html This website looks at the Arminian perspective IN DEPTH: http://members.aol.com/RSICHURCH/reform1.html I encourage you to look at both in Prayer and decide for yourself. Or, as I have done, take from one and take from the other. Either way, KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE! And hey, let's not get too dogmatic! *grin* Remember it has been an issue for hundreds of years. In His Grace, Lewis. |

2 | TAKE CARE OF PASTOR AND BE BLESSED | 1 Tim 5:17 | lovetosign | 17869
Hello! Another scripture to look at is 1 Corinthians 9:9-14. Paul draws from Old Testament scripture to support people who earn a living from presenting the Gospel. If we will be blessed is not discussed. But I would think that if scripture supports paying people who work full time in the minstry, I imagine God will bless our obedience in this matter. Hope this helps. In His Grace, Lewis. |

4 | You can fall away, can you come back? | Bible general Archive 1 | lovetosign | 17774
Hello Zecharia7! Good Question! I will see if I can give you some ideas on how to "digest" this seeming difficult passage. First, let's take a look at the person who fits the criterium of this passage (I use NASB, NIV works too): v.4 1. who have once been enlightened 2. have tasted of the heavenly gift 3. partakers of the Holy Spirit v.5 4. tasted the good word of God 5. [have tasted] the powers of the age to come 6 have[ing] fallen away My primary arguement would be for these 6 situations is in the form of a question: Which of these experiences are defined as Salvation? Enlightenment? tasted of the Heavenly Gift? Partakers in [the work of] the Holy Spirit? Tasted the Good Word of God? Tasted the powers of the age to come? I think that there may be a stronger connection with people who go to church, but have never made the connection with their heart. They get very comfortable and people just associate the with being Christian. If this person then falls away, how can they come back? To what would they come back to? Can they repent to Jesus whom they never truely accepted in the first place? No, instead because they have called themselves Christians and have fallen away, they put the name of Christ to shame. It reminds me that all Christians should be sure of thier salvation as Paul says: Philippians 2:12: "Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling," (NIV) I was not raised as a Christian but accepted Christ When I was 22 yrs old. I wonder how many people, who consider themselves Christians, have worked out thier salvation critically. Now, what I am NOT saying is that we should all doubt our salvation. Insted, critically take a look at our lives and ask ourselves if we really have that living growing dynamic relationship with Christ. If not. Why? Have you worked it out with God? With fear and trembling in the presence of God? I have been there (Not the pentecostal tremors). I have thought of what it means to follow Jesus and just how unworthy I am to get this salvation and I stand in AWE! Chief of sinners I come before God. Don't we all? Shouldn't we? Another arguement against this particular theology has to do with judgement. The Bible speaks many times to restore our brother. If the person is unrepententent, continue to reach them, then remove them from the fellowship of believers if they continue to remain in sin. Then it says to treat them as you would a non-christian. How then do we do that anyway? As an evangelical Christian should... with he Gospel. I do not know how this would fit into the faling away theology. In the falling away theology, the person loses thier salvation and are Damned to go to Hell forever, without the hope of salvation. Whew, what a judgement call! Jesus said we will be judged according to the measuring stick to which we measure others. When it comes to judging others as one who has "fallen away", i'm not touching it. I prefer to my choice over Judging the soul of another who once proclaimed Christ. I look forward to your reply. God's Blessings! Lewis. |

5 | tongues: are there 2 kinds? | NT general Archive 1 | lovetosign | 17720
Hello and Greetings in the Lord. I have studied this gift and I have come to a few conclusions: 1. In the Spirit does not mean tongues (as generally pentecostal friends try to context it. see Lk 1:17, Col 1:8,Rev 1:10; 4:2; 17:3 if you can apply tongues to the praying verse you have to apply it to these others too.) 2. The gift of the Spirit "tongues" in 1 Cor 12 has not gone away (as generally some of my Baptist friends would tell me. No, 1 Cor 13 does not mean that the tounges will cease, not unless you take away knowledge and prophecy too [let's honest with the text]) 3. You can not pray to get the gift.(does someone has a scripture for this?) 4. It is NOT the least of all the gifts (where do people get this idea?) Just because it is listed last with interpretation in 1 Cor 12? 5. Not everyone has the gift (1Cor 12:29-31 "Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts" This is a rhetorical question to which is the answer: no., But desire the greater gifts segue to 1 Cor 13 the "Love" Chapter) There is the gift of speaking in tongues. We know that there is one that is public (many times abused) and has strict guidlines for its use (see 1 cor 14:27), There also is mentioned praying in a tongue, in which our Spirit prays, but is mentally unfruitful. Whether you pray in a tongue is none of my business, and whether I do is none of your business. If you tell others that you do, why? If tongues is used in public, test it to the guidelines in 1 Cor 14. Generally tongues is a "too bad you don't have it" gift, rather than one of genuine Love: "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal" (1 Cor 12:1) Love should be the ultimate goal of any of the Gifts of the Spirit. Keep in mind:1 Cor 14:18-20 "I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults." - NIV. If you have the gift, good, if you don't, don't worry. |

6 | Could the books ref 2 books of the bible | Rev 20:12 | lovetosign | 17719
Hello, I would maintain that the Book of Life is the book which the names of the Beleivers in Jesus Christ are written (see Philippians 4:3, Revelation 3:5, Revelation 13:8) I believe that we as Believers will be judged. When we die (are dead) our judgement will be different in that we will be judged not according to our sins, but according to our deeds. Those things that were done with a pure motivation to glorify God. As the scripture also states that we will be judged "according to thier deeds." |
